NEW DELHI, October 17 — The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, announced on Saturday that cumulative capital disbursements under the Startup India Seed Fund Scheme (SISFS) have crossed the landmark threshold of ₹1,200 Crore.
Designed to bridge the crucial early-stage financing gap, SISFS facilitates seed capital of up to ₹20 lakh for proof of concept and prototype development, alongside debt-linked funding up to ₹50 lakh for commercialization through accredited incubators. Official registry metrics show that more than 4,200 nascent startups across 200+ partner incubation hubs have benefited, with over 52% of sanctioned capital directed toward emerging ventures headquartered in Tier-2 and Tier-3 urban clusters.
DPIIT highlighted that women-led ventures comprise over 46% of beneficiary entities under the scheme, catalyzing high-impact indigenous patents in deep-tech, artificial intelligence, agritech, medtech, and clean mobility, while generating over 45,000 direct specialized jobs in regional innovation corridors.
The evolution of the Startup India Action Plan (launched January 16, 2016, celebrated as National Startup Day), DPIIT regulatory governance, the Fund of Funds for Startups (FFS administered by SIDBI), angel tax reforms under the Finance Act, and India's rise as the world's third-largest startup ecosystem are vital topics for UPSC Prelims and Mains (GS Paper III).
