NEW DELHI, October 17 — The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare released the First Advance Estimates of production of major Kharif crops for the agricultural year 2026–27 on Saturday, projecting historic record foodgrain production of 164.7 Million Tonnes (MT).
The robust crop output is propelled by an optimal spatial distribution of the southwest monsoon, reservoir replenishment above decadal averages, and widespread adoption of climate-resilient seed varieties. Kharif rice production is pegged at a record 120.5 MT, while nutri-cereals/millets (Shree Anna) are estimated at 37.8 MT and total Kharif pulses output is estimated at 7.5 MT, easing domestic supply pressures.
The Directorate of Economics and Statistics indicated that targeted programmatic interventions under the National Mission on Edible Oils and the Digital Agriculture Mission, complemented by timely credit flow through Kisan Credit Cards (KCC), contributed directly to expanded sown acreage and superior per-hectare field yields.
The administrative protocol for agricultural crop estimation (the calendar of four Advance Estimates followed by Final Estimates), agro-climatic zones, the Minimum Support Price (MSP) framework recommended by CACP, and the National Food Security Act 2013 (NFSA) constitute high-frequency topics across UPSC GS-III, NABARD, and State Agriculture Officer examinations.
