NEW DELHI, October 1 — The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare on Thursday released the Final Estimates of production of major agricultural crops for the 2025-26 crop year, confirming that India's total foodgrain production touched a historic record high of 332.29 million tonnes (MT).
According to the official statistical bulletin published by the Directorate of Economics and Statistics, national rice output reached an all-time peak of 137.82 MT, while wheat harvest stood at a record 113.29 MT. Nutri-cereals (Shree Anna / Coarse Cereals) recorded 57.31 MT, maize contributed 37.66 MT, total pulses stood at 24.54 MT, and oilseed production reached 39.69 MT.
Agriculture ministry officials underlined that steady monsoon distribution, targeted deployment of climate-resilient seed varieties developed by ICAR, expanded micro-irrigation under PMKSY, and timely distribution of subsidized fertilizers enabled domestic farmers to achieve self-reliance and bolster buffer reserves under the Central Pool.
Cropping patterns in India (Kharif, Rabi, Zaid), geographical conditions required for major foodgrains, the promotion of Shree Anna (Millets), the institutional mechanism of Minimum Support Price (MSP) determined by the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP), and food security metrics are foundational concepts in UPSC Civil Services (GS-III: Agriculture & Economy) and State PCS examinations.
