NEW DELHI, October 1 — The Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance, on Thursday released the official Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection figures for September 2026, reporting that gross nationwide revenue receipts advanced by 6.5 percent year-on-year to settle at ₹1,73,240 crore.
According to the official tax revenue audit, the gross collection comprised ₹31,425 crore under Central GST (CGST), ₹38,710 crore under State GST (SGST), ₹89,450 crore under Integrated GST (IGST, inclusive of ₹42,800 crore collected on merchandise imports), and ₹13,655 crore via the Compensation Cess. Following statutory refund adjustments amounting to ₹20,450 crore, net GST mop-up stood at ₹1.53 lakh crore, reflecting resilient domestic consumption cycles.
Revenue officials emphasized that cumulative gross GST revenue across the first half of FY 2026-27 (April–September) crossed ₹10.60 lakh crore, posting a cumulative 8.9 percent growth. Growth was propelled by rigorous electronic invoicing (e-invoicing) thresholds and automated algorithmic reconciliations preventing fraudulent input tax credit (ITC) claims.
The constitutional framework of the Goods and Services Tax (enacted via the 101st Constitutional Amendment Act 2016 and operationalized on July 1, 2017), the statutory composition of the GST Council under Article 279A, the mechanics of Input Tax Credit, and indirect tax buoyancy in fiscal federalism are foundational topics across UPSC Civil Services (GS-III: Public Finance & Indian Economy) and State Commercial Tax examinations.
