NEW DELHI, October 1 — The Ministry of Coal on Thursday released the official production performance audit for the first half of FY 2026-27 (April–September), reporting an all-time record domestic coal output of 442.27 million tonnes (MT), marking a robust 7.4 percent year-on-year expansion.
According to data compiled by the Coal Controller's Organisation, Maharatna PSU Coal India Limited (CIL) contributed 341.5 MT to the national aggregate, while captive and commercial coal blocks recorded an impressive 20.8 percent surge to deliver 76.3 MT. Cumulative dispatch to domestic thermal power generation utilities reached 412 MT, maintaining power plant pithead inventories above critical threshold levels.
Coal officials emphasized that the acceleration of mechanized First-Mile Connectivity (FMC) rail corridors, coupled with private participation under progressive commercial coal auction rounds, has drastically curtailed non-essential thermal coal import substitution, safeguarding foreign exchange reserves.
The operational architecture of the Indian coal sector, the Maharatna corporate status of Coal India Limited, the Coal Mines (Special Provisions) Act 2015, baseline thermal baseload requirements amidst renewable integration, and India's long-term energy transition roadmap are key areas across UPSC Civil Services (GS-III: Infrastructure & Energy Security) and State PSC exams.
