NEW DELHI, October 13 — The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance, on Tuesday released provisional direct tax collection figures for the first half of FY 2026-27, reporting that net direct tax mop-up advanced by 15.4 percent year-on-year to breach ₹9.95 lakh crore.
According to the official fiscal performance audit, gross direct tax collections climbed to ₹11.23 lakh crore. The disaggregated revenue streams show Corporate Income Tax (CIT) collections standing at ₹4.92 lakh crore, while Personal Income Tax (PIT)—inclusive of Securities Transaction Tax (STT) receipts—contributed ₹5.03 lakh crore. Demonstrating enhanced taxpayer processing efficiency, the income tax department processed and issued refunds amounting to ₹1.28 lakh crore, an increase of 21 percent over the previous year.
Revenue officials emphasized that advance tax collections expanded by 22.8 percent during the second quarter installment window. This buoyant trajectory highlights sustained corporate profitability, robust formal employment expansion, and systemic compliance gains unlocked through automated digital reconciliation via the Annual Information Statement (AIS) and Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS).
The statutory architecture of the CBDT (constituted under the Central Board of Revenue Act 1963), historical trends in India's tax-to-GDP ratio, the Laffer Curve theorem, advance tax payment timelines under the Income Tax Act 1961, and fiscal deficit management under the FRBM Act are core syllabus topics across UPSC Civil Services (GS-III: Public Finance) and RBI Grade B examinations.
