MUMBAI, October 13 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday inaugurated the state-of-the-art campus of the Indian Institute of Skills (IIS) in Mumbai, alongside launching the upgraded ₹8,000 crore framework of Skill India Mission 2.0, geared toward aligning technical vocational training with Industry 4.0 requirements.
Constructed via a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model between the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) and the Tata Education and Development Trust, the flagship institute features specialized experiential laboratories in generative AI, industrial robotics, precision additive manufacturing, electric vehicle powertrains, and smart automation. The Prime Minister announced that 1,000 Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) nationwide will be overhauled through a hub-and-spoke modernisation architecture.
During the event, the government rolled out direct stipend disbursements benefiting 500,000 new apprentices enrolled under the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS). The strategic objective is positioning India as the undisputed 'Skill Capital of the World' by institutionalising internationally harmonised skill credentials recognized across OECD nations.
The institutional framework of the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY 4.0), apprenticeship laws under the Apprentices Act 1961, demographic dividend metrics (India's median population age of 28.4 years), and vocational integration under the National Education Policy (NEP 2020) are core topics across UPSC Civil Services (GS-II: Social Justice & Human Capital) and State PSC examinations.
