NAVI MUMBAI, October 17 — Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL), under the Ministry of Railways, announced the successful completion of 100% route electrification across its entire 741-kilometre coastal broad-gauge trunk route connecting Roha in Maharashtra to Thokur in Karnataka on Saturday.
Traversing the formidable Western Ghats terrain across Maharashtra, Goa, and Karnataka—encompassing 91 tunnels spanning 84 km and over 2,000 bridges across coastal estuaries—the complete energization of the 25 kV AC overhead traction infrastructure represents a historic civil engineering triumph. The transition eliminates traction changes at Roha and Mangaluru, enabling uninterrupted high-speed electric passenger and freight movement.
KRCL reported that 100% electrification will yield annual operational savings exceeding ₹150 Crore in imported high-speed diesel consumption, alongside curtailing carbon dioxide emissions by over 2,52,000 tonnes per annum, directly reinforcing Indian Railways' target of becoming a Net-Zero Carbon Emitter by 2030.
The pioneering engineering legacy of the Konkan Railway (incorporated in 1990 under Dr. E. Sreedharan and commissioned in 1998), the development of the innovative Roll-on/Roll-off (RO-RO) logistics model, Indian Railways zone hierarchies, and Mission 100% Electrification represent standard questions across RRB NTPC, SSC, and State PSC engineering examinations.
