HULUNBUIR, October 21 — The Indian Men's Hockey Team, captained by ace drag-flicker Harmanpreet Singh, defended its continental crown in style on Tuesday, edging past host nation China 1–0 in the final of the Men's Asian Champions Trophy at Hulunbuir to secure a record-extending fifth championship title.
Following three tightly contested scoreless quarters against a disciplined Chinese deep-block defence, India broke the deadlock in the 51st minute when Harmanpreet Singh orchestrated a slick circle penetration, feeding defender Jugraj Singh who slotted home a clinical field goal. Remaining unbeaten across all seven tournament fixtures, Harmanpreet Singh was named Player of the Tournament after netting seven goals across the campaign.
Hockey India and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports lauded the victory, noting that the triumph solidifies India's status as the tournament’s most decorated nation (having previously lifted the trophy in 2011, 2016, 2018, and 2023) following back-to-back Olympic bronze medals in Tokyo and Paris.
The history of the Asian Champions Trophy (organized by the Asian Hockey Federation since 2011), the governance of the International Hockey Federation (FIH headquartered in Lausanne, Switzerland), and India's unparalleled Olympic hockey legacy (8 Gold, 1 Silver, and 4 Bronze medals) are perennial sports GK questions in SSC and Railway exams.
