The Anganwadi centre is the most local government institution in Andhra Pradesh. It sits inside a village or a ward, serves children under six, pregnant women and nursing mothers, and is run by two women from the same community: the Anganwadi Worker and the Anganwadi Helper. Above them is a Supervisor, who guides about two dozen centres, and above the Supervisor is the Child Development Project Officer. Recruitment to these posts does not follow one calendar. The Worker, Mini Worker and Helper posts are filled by district notifications issued by the Collector's office on behalf of the Women and Child Welfare Department, while the Supervisor post is filled through the Andhra Pradesh Public Service Commission. This guide explains both routes, says what is open and what is not as on 7 October 2026, and sets out eligibility, selection, honorarium, duties and preparation using official documents wherever we could open them.

Two cautions apply from the start. First, the Worker and Helper posts are district-level and short-window, so any single article about a district can be out of date within weeks. Second, the honorarium and several rules have changed in recent years. Where we could not verify a figure on an official page, we say so.

Short answer: what is open as on 7 October 2026

There are two different answers, one for each route.

Supervisor Grade-I (APPSC). Yes, a notification exists. The Commission issued Brief Notification No. 13/2026 dated 15 September 2026 for direct recruitment to Supervisor Grade-I in the Andhra Pradesh Women Development and Child Welfare Sub-Ordinate Service, for women only, with 29 provisional vacancies and a pay scale of Rs 37,640 to Rs 1,15,500. The brief notification states that online applications will be invited from 16 October 2026 to 5 November 2026 up to 11:59 pm, and that the detailed notification will be available on the Commission's website on or before 16 October 2026. As on 7 October 2026 the application window has therefore not opened, and the detailed notification, which carries age, community-wise vacancies and fee, has not yet been issued. The Commission's web note of 15 September 2026 lists the same dates as tentative.

Anganwadi Worker, Mini Worker and Helper (districts). There is no single statewide notification. Each district's Women Development and Child Welfare office issues its own, usually for a handful of villages, with applications submitted offline at the Child Development Project Officer's office within about ten days. The official Nandyal district portal carries a notification of 26 June 2025 for 2 main Anganwadi Worker, 2 Mini Anganwadi Worker and 38 Anganwadi Helper posts across six ICDS projects, and a notice extending the date for applications to 31 July 2025. Job portals also report 2026 district notifications, for example 230 posts in Sri Sathya Sai district with applications from 9 to 18 June 2026, and 70 posts in Nandyal district in September 2026. We could not confirm those two on an official page, and their windows had in any case closed by 7 October 2026. If a notification is open in your district, you will find it on the district website under Recruitment and on the notice board of the CDPO office.

The system behind the posts

The Integrated Child Development Services scheme is now part of Mission Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0. The Ministry of Women and Child Development's scheme guidelines describe the Anganwadi Services as a package of six services delivered through the Anganwadi Centre:

  1. Supplementary nutrition
  2. Pre-school non-formal education
  3. Nutrition and health education
  4. Immunisation
  5. Health check-up
  6. Referral services

Three of the six, immunisation, health check-up and referral, are related to health and are delivered through the health system, with the Anganwadi Worker supporting. The guidelines state that the scheme covers children up to six years, pregnant women and lactating mothers, and, in aspirational districts and north-eastern states, adolescent girls aged 14 to 18. The guidelines say the Anganwadi Services were approved for the 15th Finance Commission period, 2021-22 to 2025-26, and that the network covers about 14 lakh Anganwadi Centres across the country. Since the cycle named in the guidelines ended in March 2026, check any continuation order for the current period, because honorarium and cost-sharing figures sit inside it.

The guidelines describe Anganwadi Workers and Helpers as honorary workers from the local community who serve on a part-time basis, paid monthly honoraria as decided by the government from time to time. This language matters for exams. An Anganwadi Worker is not a regular government servant, even though the work is a public service, and the payment is called honorarium. The question of status has been a long-running subject of union demands in the state, and the state has moved on some of them, as described below.

The posts, from the village upward

Post Level What the post does
Anganwadi Helper One per main centre Cooks and serves food, cleans the premises and helps the Worker
Anganwadi Worker Main centre Runs the centre and its services and keeps records
Mini Anganwadi Worker Mini centre Does the work of a Worker at a smaller centre, where only one worker is sanctioned
Supervisor About 25 main centres Guides Workers, checks quality and links to the CDPO
CDPO One project Administers a block-level ICDS project
District officer District Programme officer for the district

The guidelines state that supervisors are supported at the rate of one for every 25 main centres in the scheme's cost norms, which is a useful number to remember. It is a norm for funding, and the actual ratio in a project can differ with vacancies.

Under the central guidelines a mini centre has a single worker, and a mini centre that meets the population norms of a main centre is to be upgraded to a main centre. The Andhra Pradesh government's statement in the Legislative Council, as reported, mentioned the conversion of about 5,000 mini centres into full centres and the recruitment of about 5,000 helpers. The report did not show its date on the page we opened and these are plans, so we do not treat them as vacancies.

What the Anganwadi Worker does

The central guidelines list the Worker's duties in detail, and the list reads like a map of the job. In plain words the Worker:

  • Builds community support for the centre and visits homes to counsel parents.
  • Registers children under six, pregnant women and lactating mothers, and weighs every child each month, recording the weight on a growth card and referring children who are not growing well.
  • Enters beneficiary data in the Poshan Tracker app on a smartphone given to the centre and submits the reports and returns that are asked for.
  • Organises non-formal pre-school activity for children aged three to six and helps make toys and play material from local resources.
  • Plans the menu from local ingredients and organises supplementary nutrition for children from six months to six years, pregnant women and nursing mothers.
  • Gives health and nutrition education, including advice on breastfeeding and on feeding infants and young children.
  • Assists the health staff with immunisation, ante-natal and post-natal check-ups, and keeps stock of iron-folic acid and vitamin A for the ANM to administer.
  • Guides the ASHA worker, supports adolescent girls' activities where the scheme applies, identifies children with special needs during home visits and refers them to the nearest health centre.
  • Maintains the prescribed records and alerts the Supervisor or CDPO to developments that need attention.

Notice how much of this is recordkeeping, counselling and coordination. That is why the Worker's recruitment emphasises Class 10 results and local residence. The woman is chosen to serve her own neighbours, and she needs to be able to read, write, handle a form and use a phone application.

What the Anganwadi Helper does

The guidelines give the Helper a short list: cook and serve food to beneficiaries, clean the premises daily and fetch water, ensure cleanliness in young children, bring children from the community to the centre, help the Worker in smooth discharge of her duties, and carry out the Worker's functions in her absence. The last point is the one that supports promotion, because a Helper often learns the Worker's job.

Promotion routes

The central guidelines provide two promotion ladders, and they are worth learning because they come up in interviews and in exam questions on ICDS. Fifty per cent of Anganwadi Worker posts are to be filled by promoting Helpers who have five years of experience, subject to vacancies and to fulfilment of educational qualification, service record and age criteria. Fifty per cent of Supervisor posts are to be filled by promoting Workers who have five years of experience and the educational qualification in the recruitment rules for the Supervisor, failing which the vacancies are filled by direct recruitment. Reservation orders are to be kept in view during promotion.

The practical reading is that a Helper with Class 10 can aim to become a Worker, and a Worker who also holds the degree prescribed for Supervisors can aim for promotion, while direct recruits enter through the Commission. How the state applies these shares in each year is not something we could verify on an official page. The APPSC notification for Supervisor Grade-I is a direct recruitment notice; whether a separate promotion quota is being operated alongside it is not stated in the brief notification.

Honorarium: central share and state top-up

The central guidelines set the Centre's honorarium at Rs 4,500 a month for an Anganwadi Worker at a main centre, Rs 3,500 for a Worker at a mini centre and Rs 2,250 for a Helper, shared between the Centre and the states at 60:40 for states with a legislature. States are free to add from their own resources, and Andhra Pradesh does.

The state figure is where care is needed. Reports from 2025 and the 2026 district notifications on job portals give Rs 11,500 a month for an Anganwadi Worker and Rs 7,000 a month for a Helper. A Hans India report of 7 March 2025 says the state minister announced an intention to increase the honorarium and pay gratuity, and recalls that under the earlier administration the honorarium had gone from Rs 10,500 to Rs 11,500. A later report on a Legislative Council reply, undated on the page we opened, says the government is examining a proposal to increase the honorarium. We did not find an official order on any revision after that. We also could not verify a figure for Mini Anganwadi Workers. So, as on October 2026, the safe statement is this: the commonly reported state figures are Rs 11,500 for Workers and Rs 7,000 for Helpers, the central floor is Rs 4,500, Rs 3,500 and Rs 2,250, and the notification of your district will print the amount for that recruitment.

Related benefits reported in the state: the retirement age of Workers and Helpers is reported as 62 years with gratuity at retirement, and a television report says the state released Rs 19.70 crore for gratuity and retirement benefits for 2025-26 after a Supreme Court ruling that Anganwadi workers are covered by the Payment of Gratuity Act, 1972. The Legislative Council reply also mentions 180 days of maternity leave, a two lakh rupee life insurance cover under a central scheme and uniforms. Treat these as reported benefits and read the current government order before quoting a number.

Eligibility for Worker, Mini Worker and Helper in Andhra Pradesh

The best evidence is the text of an actual district notification. The Nandyal district notification dated 26 June 2025, signed by the Collector, gives the following conditions. The posts are for women, from the local area of the centre.

  • For the Anganwadi Worker: pass in Class 10 as a minimum.
  • Age: 21 to 35 years as on 1 July 2024 (the reckoning date printed in that notification). In habitations of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, if no candidate aged 21 or above is available, candidates of 18 years and above are considered.
  • The candidate must be married and a local resident of the area.
  • For the Mini Worker and the Helper: Class 10 pass is the stated qualification, with a fallback wording for cases where no one with Class 10 is available. Read that clause carefully in the notification of your own district because it decides who is eligible when the habitation has few educated candidates.
  • Documents: birth or age proof, a caste certificate (the notification asks Scheduled Caste candidates for a certificate showing the group to which their caste belongs, citing a government order of 18 April 2025), educational certificates, residence proof, a husband's death certificate for widows and the children's age proof where the candidate has children below 18, a disability certificate where relevant, an Aadhaar card and a ration card.
  • Method: attested copies submitted at the CDPO office on working days before 5 pm on the last date.

The central guidelines are different, and the difference matters for an exam question. They state a minimum qualification of Class 12 and an age of 18 to 35 years for engagement of Workers and Helpers, with the educational qualification applying to newly engaged functionaries, and they say the retirement age is for the state to decide, subject to no engagement beyond 65. The capacity-building table in the guidelines lists Lady Supervisor as 12th pass or graduate with age 21 to 45, Workers and Helpers as 12th pass with age 18 to 35. The state notification, not the central guideline, is the document that governs a given recruitment, and the Andhra Pradesh notification we read asks for Class 10 and 21 to 35. If a question says "as per ICDS guidelines", answer with the central norm; if it says "as per the district notification", answer with the state text.

How selection was run: the order of 2015, and what to check

The district notifications we could open do not describe the scoring in the text. The best published statement of the scoring is G.O.Ms.No.18 of 15 May 2015 of the Department for Women, Children, Disabled and Senior Citizens, as reproduced on a G.O. repository website. It gives two sets of weightage out of 100 and says the earlier set was revised.

Parameter Earlier set Revised set
Class 10 marks 50 50
Pre-school teacher training or pre-school worker experience 10 5
Widow 5 5
Widow with minor children (additional) 5 5
Orphan from a government institution 10 10
Differently abled 5 5
Oral interview 15 20
Total 100 100

The same order, as reproduced, names the selection committee for ICDS projects: the District Collector as chairperson, the Revenue Divisional Officer, the District Medical and Health Officer, the CDPO, and the Project Director of Women Development as convener. The Sri Sathya Sai notice, as a portal summarises it, says the Collector is the final authority and that selection is merit-based on Class 10 marks with document verification. There is no written examination for Worker and Helper posts in anything we read.

Two cautions apply. The 2015 order is old, and later orders can change the weightage, so treat the table as the framework and not as a guarantee. And the order itself, as reproduced, does not say how Class 10 marks are converted into the 50 points. Your district notification or the instructions of the CDPO will say. When the notice says the roster will be applied, read it alongside our guide on local status and the reservation roster, because the roster point for a specific centre, often by community, decides who can compete for it.

Why local residence and marital status are written into the notice

Applicants often ask why the notice names a village. The reason is the design of the service. The Worker visits homes, knows the families and works when a mother is available, so the guidelines call the functionaries honorary workers from the local community. The 2025 Nandyal notification requires a local resident and a married woman for the Worker. The requirement can be strict about the habitation, for example the same village or ward, and a certificate from the revenue authority is usually the proof. If you have recently moved, get the residence proof updated before a notification appears.

Supervisor Grade-I through APPSC: the facts from the brief notification

The Supervisor post is a different world. It is a post in a state subordinate service, filled by the state commission through a computer-based test. The details in the brief notification, which we read in full, are:

  • Post: Supervisor Grade-I, Andhra Pradesh Women Development and Child Welfare Sub-Ordinate Service, for women only. General recruitment.
  • Vacancies: 29, provisional, subject to variation on confirmation from the department.
  • Pay scale: Rs 37,640 to Rs 1,15,500.
  • Education, as printed: a Bachelor's degree in Home Science or Social Work, a degree in Sociology, or one of several B.Sc. combinations in Food Science and Nutrition, Food and Nutrition, Applied Nutrition and Public Health, Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics, Food Sciences and Quality Control, Food Sciences and Management, Food Technology and Nutrition, and Food Technology and Management, with the subject groups listed in the notice. The notice cites G.O.Ms.No.14 of the Women, Children, Disabled and Senior Citizens Department dated 27 June 2013. It adds that candidates with a higher qualification only in Home Science, Social Work, Sociology or Food Science and Nutrition are eligible.
  • Qualification is reckoned as on the date of the detailed notification, which is the crucial date for all aspects.
  • Mode: online applications only. A single-level examination with no screening test, conducted as a computer-based test, with normalisation of marks if there are multiple sessions.
  • Examination: Paper-1 General Studies and Mental Ability, 150 questions, 150 minutes, 150 marks; Paper-2 Home Science and Social Work, 150 questions, 150 minutes, 150 marks. Total 300 marks. Wrong answers carry a penalty of one-third of the marks for the question.
  • Computer Proficiency Test: 60 minutes, 100 marks, with qualifying marks of 30 for SC, ST and persons with benchmark disabilities, 35 for BC and 40 for OC.

Age limit, community-wise vacancies, the exact fee and the language of the instructions will be in the detailed notification. The age orders of September 2026 explained in our age limit guide raise the general limit for non-uniformed services to 44 years for notifications up to 30 September 2027. This post is not uniformed, so that order is relevant, but do not decide on the strength of a summary. Read the age clause of the detailed notification, which will give both the reckoning date and the category concessions.

Some portals describe the qualification and exam in slightly different words, including different degree lists. The brief notification text is the authority, so where a portal differs, trust the notification.

The syllabus in plain words

The brief notification annexes the scheme and syllabus.

Paper-1 General Studies and Mental Ability has ten topics: major current events and issues, international, national and of Andhra Pradesh; general science and its applications, with contemporary developments in science, technology and information technology; history of India with emphasis on the social, economic, cultural and political aspects, focused on Andhra Pradesh and the national movement; geography of India with a focus on Andhra Pradesh; Indian polity and governance including constitutional issues, public policy, reforms and e-governance; Indian economy and planning; sustainable development and environmental protection; disaster management, including remote sensing and GIS in assessment; logical reasoning and analytical ability; and data analysis, including tabulation, visual representation, mean, median, mode and variance.

Paper-2 Home Science and Social Work has three blocks. Food science and nutrition covers food groups and nutritive value, cooking methods and quality, food poisoning and allergy, the functions and deficiency signs of nutrients, needs across the life cycle, meal planning and diet in disease, and assessment of nutritional status. Child development covers growth and development, prenatal and postnatal care, breastfeeding, immunisation, early childhood and the importance of play, crèches and balwadis, pre-school education, child welfare services, rights and special-care groups, and then a set of rural development and extension topics: agriculture trends and policy, community development and Panchayats, extension methods, programmes for rural women and children, ICDS, family welfare and the role of the United Nations agencies in nutrition. Social work covers the concept and scope of social work, its history, methods of casework, group work and community organisation, fields of practice, family and child welfare, the status and problems of women and related laws, and the organisation and functions of the state women's welfare department.

This is a degree-standard scheme. Paper-2 rewards candidates who already studied Home Science, Social Work, Sociology or Nutrition, while Paper-1 is the equaliser, and the CPT is a separate qualifying hurdle that has caught many people who prepared only for the written papers.

A preparation plan for the Supervisor examination

Allow about twelve weeks if the application closes on 5 November and the test follows later; the Commission will announce the exam dates separately, and we do not guess them.

Weeks Paper-1 Paper-2 CPT
1 to 3 Polity and Economy basics with Andhra Pradesh focus Nutrition: nutrients, deficiency signs, life-cycle needs Learn the Part-A computer concepts list
4 to 6 Geography and Environment; History of Andhra and national movement Child development: growth stages, immunisation, pre-school Typing practice every day
7 to 9 Science, disaster management, current affairs Social work, extension methods, ICDS and women's welfare laws Word documents, tables and mail merge
10 to 11 Reasoning and data analysis; full-length practice Previous-style practice in nutrition and child development Excel formulas, charts and slides
12 Revision of weak areas Revision Timed mock of the full CPT

Start Paper-2 with the topics where a Home Science or Nutrition graduate would be strongest and a Sociology or Social Work graduate weakest, and fill the gap first. Candidates from a Social Work background should give extra hours to the nutrient tables and diet in disease. For a Home Science graduate, the social work block and extension methods are the weaker side.

For Paper-1, the Andhra Pradesh angle appears in most items, so read our AP schemes notes, economy and budget notes, current affairs study method and the Andhra Pradesh GK top 100. For books and free material, see the books and resources guide.

Worked examples

Example 1: negative marking. Each of the 150 questions in a paper carries one mark, and each wrong answer costs one-third of a mark. A candidate attempts 120 questions in Paper-2, gets 96 right and 24 wrong. Marks are 96 minus 24 divided by 3, which is 96 minus 8, giving 88. The candidate who attempted only 100 with 88 right and 12 wrong gets 88 minus 4, which is 84. A higher attempt count helped here, but the same candidate with 80 right and 40 wrong would get 80 minus 13.33, which is 66.67. The lesson is that guessing without elimination costs real marks.

Example 2: the CPT pass mark. The CPT is out of 100. A BC candidate needs at least 35, an OC candidate at least 40 and an SC or ST candidate at least 30. A candidate with 38 marks is eligible if BC, but not if OC. Because the CPT is a practical test of typing, formatting, spreadsheets and slides, it can be prepared in a few weeks with daily practice, and the Commission's assessment pattern gives the weight of each part: multiple choice 20 per cent, typing speed 25 per cent, organising and inserting objects 15 per cent, spreadsheet 20 per cent and presentation 20 per cent.

Example 3: supervisor load. If an ICDS project has 250 main centres and the norm of one supervisor for 25 main centres is applied, the project needs 10 supervisors. If six are in post, each of those six would have about 42 centres to visit, which explains why supervision gaps are a common theme in reports on the scheme.

Example 4: age cut-off. A district notification prints the age as 21 to 35 on 1 July of a stated year. A woman born on 5 July 1991 is 34 on 1 July 2026 and eligible on that date, but a woman born on 30 June 1990 is 36 on that date and not eligible, unless the notice gives a relaxation. Always compute to the printed date, which in the 2025 Nandyal case was 1 July 2024.

Common mistakes

  1. Searching for one statewide Anganwadi vacancy list. Worker and Helper posts are notified district by district, and a vacancy at your own centre may be notified only once.
  2. Confusing Worker with Supervisor. The Worker is an honorary functionary chosen locally; the Supervisor is a Commission-recruited staff post with a pay scale.
  3. Missing the short window. District notices often give about ten days and require a physical submission at the CDPO office.
  4. Submitting a caste certificate in the wrong format. The 2025 notice asked for a specific format for Scheduled Caste candidates.
  5. Ignoring marital and residence conditions. The Worker post names both.
  6. Treating a reported honorarium figure as final. The notification of the district is the document to read.
  7. Skipping the CPT. The Supervisor examination has a separate qualifying computer test.
  8. Using old degree lists. The Supervisor qualification is a closed list, and the detailed notification may refine it.
  9. Trusting a portal summary of the Supervisor syllabus or fee rather than the Commission's own notice.

Documents and steps for a district application

  1. Open the district website, usually under Recruitment, and find the notification of your district, or ask at the CDPO office.
  2. Read the vacancy table for your ICDS project and your centre, and the roster point.
  3. Check your age against the printed reckoning date and your residence against the habitation named.
  4. Collect the birth proof, Class 10 certificate and marks memo, caste certificate in the required format, residence proof, marriage or widowhood proof where relevant, disability certificate if claimed, Aadhaar and ration card.
  5. Self-attest the copies and submit them at the CDPO office on a working day before the stated time on the last date. Collect a receipt.
  6. Keep a copy of everything and note the date of the interview or the list.

For the Supervisor post, the steps are online: register on the Commission's One Time Profile Registration system, wait for the detailed notification, check eligibility against its qualification and age clauses, and apply between 16 October and 5 November 2026 as notified. Our OTR registration guide explains the profile system.

Where Anganwadi sits in your wider planning

Candidates sometimes treat an Anganwadi post as a stepping stone and a Supervisor post as a long-term career. Both are valid, but they are different in security, pay and the route of entry. If you are a graduate in Home Science or Nutrition, the APPSC post is a direct competitive exam with a clear syllabus. If you are a local woman with Class 10, the district route offers an opportunity close to home, and the promotion ladders in the guidelines create a path upward. For other posts open to graduates see AP government jobs after degree, and for the full calendar see AP government jobs calendar 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an Anganwadi notification in Andhra Pradesh right now? Worker, Mini Worker and Helper posts are notified by districts at different times. We could not confirm an open district notification from an official page as on 7 October 2026, so check your own district's website and CDPO office. The APPSC Supervisor Grade-I notification has its application window from 16 October 2026.

Is Supervisor Grade-I the same as Grade-II Supervisor? The Commission's current notification names the post Supervisor Grade-I in the Women Development and Child Welfare Sub-Ordinate Service. We did not find a current recruitment notice for a post named Grade-II Supervisor.

Who can apply for the Supervisor post? Women with the listed degree in Home Science, Social Work, Sociology or the specified Food Science and Nutrition combinations. The age and fee are in the detailed notification due on or before 16 October 2026.

Is there an interview? For the Supervisor post, the brief notification describes a single-level written test and a computer proficiency test and does not mention an interview. For Worker and Helper posts, the 2015 order describes an oral interview component in the selection framework, so check the current notice.

What is the age limit for Workers and Helpers? The Nandyal notification of 2025 said 21 to 35 as on 1 July 2024, with a lower age considered in Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe habitations where older candidates are not available. The central guidelines say 18 to 35. The notification of your district governs.

What is the honorarium? The central figures are Rs 4,500, Rs 3,500 and Rs 2,250. Reports and portals give Rs 11,500 for Workers and Rs 7,000 for Helpers for Andhra Pradesh. We could not verify a Mini Worker figure or any revision after 2025, so read the notification.

Can a married woman from another village apply? The 2025 notification required a local resident of the area. Residence is checked at the habitation level, so a woman from another village would not qualify for that centre.

Is the Anganwadi Worker a government employee? The central guidelines call Workers and Helpers honorary workers paid an honorarium. The state has announced benefits such as gratuity and a retirement age, as reported, but the post is not described as regular government service in the guidelines.

Sources and verification

Opened and read, official first:

Not verified: any open district Anganwadi notification as on 7 October 2026; the 2026 Sri Sathya Sai and Nandyal notifications on official pages; the current state honorarium, the Mini Worker figure and any order after 2025; whether the 2015 selection weightage is unchanged; the Supervisor detailed notification (age, fee, community-wise vacancies); the Supervisor exam date; the current central scheme period after March 2026; and the Telugu text of the Helper fallback clause beyond what the notification states. A television report was used for the gratuity release, not a government order.
