Few government posts in Andhra Pradesh are as visible as the driver and conductor of a bus, and few topics attract as many unreliable job alerts. Every few months a message starts to circulate saying that the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) will fill thousands of posts, often with a precise vacancy figure, an application fee and a last date. This guide separates what can be checked from what is only repeated. It explains where recruitment stands as on October 2026, how the department is organised after its merger with the government, what the licence law requires of a driver and a conductor, how earlier selections were run, what the work involves, and how to prepare so that you are ready on the day a genuine notification appears.
One point should be stated before anything else. As on 7 October 2026, the Recruitments page of the official APSRTC website carries the line that there are no notices in that area. No application form, fee, exam date or syllabus exists today. Everything below about eligibility and selection comes from earlier regional notifications and from the law, and each such item is labelled as a guide, not as the rule for a future notification.
Short answer: is there an open notification today?
No. On the APSRTC Recruitments page opened on 7 October 2026 the text reads that at present there are no notices in this area. The page lists a head office address at RTC House, Pandit Nehru Bus Station, Vijayawada, but no vacancy list. Several job portals, however, carry articles that speak of 7,673 posts (3,673 drivers, 1,813 conductors and 2,187 technical and shramik posts) and give dates in February 2026. Those pages describe a board resolution of 27 January 2026 that sought government approval, and the better ones admit that the notification itself has not been released. We could not find that figure, that resolution or any application link on an official page, so this guide treats the 7,673 figure as a reported number that is unverified.
The practical rule is simple. A real recruitment will appear on the official website of the corporation or the department, and in the major newspapers. If a message asks you to pay a fee to an individual, to share an OTP or to send Aadhaar details to a phone number, it is not an official process. APSRTC itself warned about this in February 2023 when a false "APSRTC Jobs Notification 2023" circulated on WhatsApp, and officials said they had issued no such notification and that the public should not pay advance fees.

What APSRTC is and why recruitment looks different now
APSRTC was set up on 11 January 1958 and has its headquarters in Vijayawada. It runs bus services within the state and to neighbouring states and Yanam. Public sources describe a network of 129 depots, 12 regions and four zones, and a fleet that is a mix of corporation-owned buses and buses hired on rental. The numbers move over time. A reference summary gives 11,495 buses as on March 2025, of which 8,716 were owned and 2,779 hired, while a September 2026 newspaper report speaks of about 8,200 corporation buses, 2,600 hired buses and some 41 lakh daily passengers. The two figures describe different dates and different counting, so do not memorise a single fleet number for an exam without noting the date.
The most important structural fact is the merger. In September 2019 the state cabinet approved merging the corporation's workforce into the government through a new Public Transport Department. The chief minister of the time announced in December 2019 that employees would be treated as government staff from 1 January 2020, with about 52,000 employees affected and the retirement age rising from 58 to 60 years. The details of how new posts are now created and filled, whether by the corporation, by the department or through a state agency, are not spelled out on the pages we could open, which is one more reason to read the first line of any real notification: it will name the authority that is recruiting.
This matters for you in two ways. First, the older style of recruitment, in which each region of the corporation invited applications for contract drivers by selling forms at depots, belonged to the corporation era. A new notification may follow a different route. Second, because service conditions were aligned with government service, any regular post is likely to carry the usual government elements: a roster for reservations, local-status rules and a probation period. Our guides on local status and the reservation roster and on age limits and relaxations explain how these apply to state posts.
The posts people ask about
When people say APSRTC recruitment they usually mean a few groups of posts. The table lists them with what can and cannot be said today.
| Post | What it is | Verified status |
|---|---|---|
| Driver | Drives a stage carriage on assigned routes | No open notification; past regional notifications exist |
| Conductor | Issues tickets, handles cash and passengers on a stage carriage | No open notification; legal licence requirement exists |
| Mechanic, Shramik and technical staff | Depot workshop and maintenance work | Mentioned by portals only; unverified |
| On-call driver | Driver engaged on a daily-wage basis | Exists in practice as reported in September 2026; not a regular post |
| Apprentices | Trade apprentices placed in workshops | Handled under the apprenticeship system, separate from regular posts |
A word on the on-call system, because it explains a lot of the news. A September 2026 newspaper report says depots increasingly depend on drivers engaged on a daily basis, about 4,000 across the state, and that no new regular driver recruitment has taken place in recent years. The report adds that on-call candidates need a heavy vehicle licence and about a year and a half of experience and take a basic driving test before they are approved. The report links the shortage to retirements and to staff who become unfit for driving. It also notes that the new free-travel scheme for women has raised the load on the system. For the scheme itself, see Stree Shakti in our schemes notes, which records that the scheme began on 15 August 2025 and covers only listed classes of service.
Employee unions have said in public that the corporation needs a large number of additional staff. A report of 19 July 2026 says the unions sought the immediate recruitment of nearly 15,000 people across drivers, conductors, mechanical staff and supervisors. That is a demand, and a demand is not a vacancy. Keep the two ideas apart when you read a headline.
What the law requires of a driver
Whatever a future notification says about education, a person cannot drive a bus on duty without the right licence, and the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 sets the base. The points below come from the licensing chapter of the Act as summarised on a statute reference page we opened. Check them against the current text and any recent amendment before relying on them.
- Minimum age for a transport vehicle is 20 years. For most other vehicles it is 18.
- A learner's licence for a transport vehicle requires that the applicant has held a licence to drive a light motor vehicle for at least one year.
- Since the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019 (provisions applicable from 1 September 2019), a licence to drive a transport vehicle remains valid for five years at a time, and for three years if the vehicle carries hazardous goods, and is then renewed. Older books say three years.
- Renewal can be applied for from one year before expiry up to one year after it. After that gap of more than one year, the licensing authority requires a fresh test of competence. Older books give a shorter grace period and a five-year gap rule.
- Medical fitness certificates are required in specified situations.
Past notifications added an experience rule of their own on top of the Act. The 2013 regional notifications for contract drivers asked for a valid licence for heavy passenger motor vehicles and heavy goods vehicles, held for not less than 18 months, the ability to read and write Telugu or Urdu, and a minimum height of 160 cm. The practical lesson is that the licence class and the months of experience on it are as important as the education line.
What the law requires of a conductor
A conductor of a stage carriage needs a separate licence. Section 29 of the Motor Vehicles Act says that no person shall act as a conductor of a stage carriage unless he holds an effective conductor's licence, and that an employer must not employ an unlicensed person in that role. Section 30 allows a person with the minimum educational qualification prescribed by the State Government to apply to the licensing authority, with a medical certificate from a registered practitioner and photographs. Section 31 sets the minimum age at 18 years and allows refusal on grounds such as insufficient education, medical unfitness or an earlier revocation. The fee for a conductor's licence and its renewals is half of that for a driving licence. The licence is valid for the State, and the State Government frames the rules on qualification, uniform and medical certificate.
Two consequences follow. A candidate should find out early what the State prescribes for the conductor's licence and whether a notification expects the licence at the time of application or after selection. And a conductor's duties begin with the licence, so being ready with the medical certificate and photographs saves time later.
How earlier selections were run: a guide, not a rule
The most recent driver notifications we could actually read are the regional contract notifications of 2013 reproduced on a job portal. They are old, and they were issued by individual regions of the corporation. They are useful only to show a pattern, and the pattern was short.
| Feature | What the 2013 regional notices said |
|---|---|
| Post | Driver on contract basis |
| Vacancies | 123 posts in one region; 151 in another |
| Age | 22 to 35 on 1 July 2013, with five years more for SC, ST and BC |
| Licence | Heavy passenger and heavy goods licence for at least 18 months |
| Language | Read and write Telugu or Urdu |
| Height | Not less than 160 cm |
| Pay | Rs 7,180 a month consolidated |
| Fee | Rs 100 per form, with waiver for some categories in one notice |
| Selection | Driving test after checking licence, certificates, height and age proof; one notice mentions no written test |
| How to apply | Printed forms sold at depots within a short window |
Look at what this table does not contain. It has no written paper pattern, no syllabus and no negative marking, because the selection was a driving test after document verification. If you meet a website that prints a full APSRTC syllabus and marks scheme for 2026, ask where it comes from. We found no official source for one.
For the conductor post we could not open a recent official notification, so we do not give a height rule or an exam scheme. Educational qualifications reported by portals range from Class 10 to Intermediate, and the Motor Vehicles Act leaves the minimum to the State. Wait for the notification.
Age, local status and reservations
Age rules in Andhra Pradesh changed in September 2026. Our age limit guide explains G.O.Ms.No.187 and G.O.Ms.No.188 of 14 September 2026. The key point for a bus driver is that the order raising the general limit to 44 years applies to non-uniformed services and, as that guide records, its text leaves out uniformed services, including the transport department, which are handled under separate provisions. So you should not assume that 44 applies to a driver or a conductor. The age limit and the cut-off date will be printed in the notification, and the printed figure governs.
Local status works as in other state recruitments. Most direct recruitment in the state follows a rule under which a portion of posts is open to all and the rest is reserved for local candidates in the relevant region, and reservations follow the state roster. The details change with the post and the zone, so read the zone and local-area clause in the notification and check your study certificates for Classes I to VII or your residence proof now, while there is no deadline.
Pay and conditions: what can be said
We could not verify any 2026 pay scale for drivers or conductors. The 2013 contract driver notices quoted Rs 7,180 a month, which tells you only how old the pattern is. Portals give figures for 2026, but because they relate to a notification that has not been issued, we do not repeat them. If a regular post is created under government service rules, the pay scale will be printed in the notification and linked to the revised pay structure of the state. Until then, any number you read is a guess.
What can be said with some confidence is the service structure. After the merger, the staff are described as having service rules and facilities on par with government employees, and the retirement age was raised to 60. A newly engaged contract or on-call driver would not have the same status as a regular employee, which is why you should read the first paragraph of a notification to learn whether the post is regular, contract or daily wage.
A day in the work of a driver and conductor
Knowing the job helps you answer interview questions honestly and decide whether the work suits you.
A driver reports to the depot before the duty time, checks the bus, signs for the vehicle and the trip sheet, and drives the assigned route. The duty includes the pre-trip inspection of tyres, brakes, lights, wipers, horn, fuel and emergency exit, safe driving through towns and ghats, halts at bus stations and stops, handling breakdowns, and reporting any accident or incident. A driver is accountable for the safety of every person on board. Long duties, night driving, festival rush and heavy traffic are routine in many depots.
A conductor handles the ticket machine, collects fares, issues tickets, checks passes and the concessions that apply, handles cash and returns it to the depot, guides passengers, gives the signal to the driver at stops and keeps the bus safe and orderly. Since the free travel scheme for women began on listed bus classes, a conductor also has to deal with eligibility questions from passengers. We have not verified the internal ticketing procedure for the scheme, so we do not describe it here; the scheme's published scope is in the schemes notes linked above.
Both roles involve shift work and public contact. If you are applying because the job is secure, it is also worth asking yourself whether you are comfortable with night duty and difficult passengers.
Documents to keep ready
The documents below are common to most state recruitments and to the licence requirements above. Keep the originals and one set of self-attested copies in a single folder.
- Date of birth proof, usually the Class 10 certificate.
- Educational certificates and marks memos.
- Valid heavy passenger or heavy goods licence for the driver post, with the issue dates visible, plus any endorsement and badge.
- Conductor's licence or the medical certificate and photographs needed to apply for one.
- Community certificate in the format used for the state's roster, and the other category certificates you claim.
- Study certificates for Classes I to VII or a residence certificate for local status.
- A medical fitness certificate. Eyesight and colour vision matter for a bus driver.
- Aadhaar, ration card and passport size photographs.
How to prepare now, before a notification
Since the last selections were driving tests, a preparation plan has three parts: licence and experience, road and vehicle knowledge, and basic written readiness in case a written test is added.
Part one: licence and experience. If you are an LMV licence holder with no heavy licence, the order of events is fixed by the law: a year on the light licence, then a learner's licence for the heavy class, then the test. Start the clock early. If you already hold a heavy licence, make sure it is valid and note how many months you have held it, because past notifications counted months, not years. Keep a record of any employment as a heavy vehicle driver, with letters from the employer.
Part two: road and vehicle knowledge. Learn the three groups of road signs, which are mandatory, cautionary and informative, and the meaning of each shape and colour. Learn the rules for overtaking, right of way at junctions and roundabouts, stopping near a bus stop, school zones and railway crossings, use of horn and lights, and the duty to stop and help after an accident. Learn the parts of a diesel bus: the engine, the clutch, the gearbox, the air brake system and the tyres, and the daily checks. Practise explaining out loud what you check before the first trip, because an examiner who watches your pre-trip inspection can judge much from it. Keep in mind the Motor Vehicles Act provisions above, including the five-year validity of a transport licence (three years for hazardous goods) since the 2019 amendment.
Part three: written readiness. Even a short selection can include a form to fill, a document check and a few questions. The earlier notices required the ability to read and write Telugu or Urdu, so practise writing your name, address and a short paragraph neatly in Telugu. If a written test is ever added, expect general knowledge on Andhra Pradesh, basic arithmetic and a section on the Motor Vehicles Act. Our Andhra Pradesh GK top 100 and the government schemes notes cover the state-related part. We do not publish an invented exam pattern because none has been notified.
A six-week routine
| Week | Focus |
|---|---|
| 1 | Check licence class, validity and months held; collect documents; read the Motor Vehicles Act summary on licensing |
| 2 | Road signs, rules of the road and right of way; make flash cards |
| 3 | Vehicle systems and the pre-trip inspection; practise the checklist aloud |
| 4 | Practical driving on varied roads if you have access to a vehicle under supervision; stress on smooth control |
| 5 | Telugu reading and writing, forms, and Andhra Pradesh basics |
| 6 | Mock interviews; revise everything; confirm that your documents carry matching names and dates |
Worked examples
Example 1: counting licence months. A candidate received a heavy passenger licence on 14 March 2025. A hypothetical notification asks for 18 months of holding as on 1 July 2026. From 14 March 2025 to 14 September 2026 is 18 months, so by 1 July 2026 the candidate has completed only 15 months and 17 days. That candidate is ineligible under that clause, even though the licence is valid. Always count to the cut-off date in the notification, not to today.
Example 2: reading the age rule. Suppose a notification prints an age band of 22 to 35 as on 1 July of the year and gives five years' relaxation for a reserved category. A candidate born on 20 June 1990 is 36 years old on 1 July 2026. A general candidate would be over age, but a reserved candidate with a five-year relaxation would be within the limit. The same arithmetic is why you should never trust a portal summary of age. Use the notification.
Example 3: conductor licence readiness. A candidate aged 19 has passed Class 10 and wishes to be a conductor. The law sets the minimum age for a conductor's licence at 18, so age is not a barrier to the licence, but the State sets the minimum educational qualification and the notification sets its own age band. The candidate can still collect a medical certificate and photographs now and learn which authority issues the licence in the home district.
Common traps for aspirants
- Believing a vacancy figure that has no official page behind it. A number repeated on ten sites is still one unverified number.
- Paying anyone to guarantee a post. No genuine process involves an agent or an advance payment.
- Mixing up the licence classes. A driving licence for light vehicles does not allow a person to drive a bus on duty.
- Counting experience to today instead of to the cut-off date.
- Treating on-call or contract work as a regular post. It is useful experience, and it can help you meet an experience clause, but it is a different status.
- Using the 44-year age ceiling for every state post without checking whether the post is covered.
- Ignoring eyesight and medical requirements until the day of the test.
- Assuming a 2013 pattern will repeat. A new notification may choose a different route and tests.
Driver, conductor and police driver compared
Many readers ask whether to wait for APSRTC or to look at other driving posts. A fair comparison needs care because the posts belong to different employers and the facts we can verify differ.
| Feature | APSRTC driver or conductor | Fire Services Driver Operator (SLPRB) |
|---|---|---|
| Open notification as on 7 Oct 2026 | None on the official page | Press note of 17.09.2026 for 147 posts, as reported in our guides |
| Authority | Corporation or department, as the notification states | State Level Police Recruitment Board |
| Licence | Heavy licence; conductor licence for conductors | Heavy transport licence |
| Selection | Unknown for 2026; past regional notices used a driving test | As printed in the SLPRB notification |
If you hold a heavy licence and want to apply to an open notification, read the Intermediate-level guide, which lists the Driver Operator post, in AP government jobs after Intermediate. If you are an ITI or diploma holder who wants technical posts, see AP government jobs for B.Tech, diploma and ITI.
How to track genuine updates
Make a short routine. Open the APSRTC Recruitments page once a week, because it is the first place a regional or state notification will be placed. Watch the Andhra Pradesh government's job calendar and read our AP government jobs calendar 2026 for what has been announced by the other agencies. Read newspaper notices only to learn that something exists, and then confirm on the official site. Do not forward unverified screenshots. If a rumour turns out to be false, you will have saved others the same trouble.

Frequently asked questions
Is there an APSRTC driver or conductor notification right now? Not on the official Recruitments page as on 7 October 2026. That page says there are no notices at present. Articles about 7,673 posts describe a plan or a resolution, and we could not verify them on an official page.
Are the 7,673 vacancies real? We cannot say. The figure appears on many portals together with a board resolution date of 27 January 2026, but the portals themselves say the notification has not been released. Treat the number as a report.
What qualification will be needed? Wait for the notification. Past regional driver notices asked for a heavy licence held for 18 months and the ability to read and write the regional language, and the law requires a conductor to hold a conductor's licence with the State's minimum education. A single universal qualification for 2026 has not been announced.
Will there be a written test? Unknown. The 2013 regional notices described a driving test after document verification. We do not publish a syllabus because none has been notified.
Can women apply? Eligibility by gender depends on the notification. The Motor Vehicles Act does not bar women from a licence. Check the notification for any physical or other norms.
What is the age limit? It will be printed in the notification. Do not assume that the 44-year ceiling applies, because the order behind it concerns non-uniformed services and, as our age guide records, excludes the transport department.
Can I apply with an LMV licence only? Not for a bus. A heavy passenger licence is the working requirement for a bus driver, and a learner's licence for a transport vehicle requires a year on the light licence.
Is an on-call driver job the same as a regular post? No. It is a daily-wage engagement. It can give experience, but it is a different status from a regular appointment.
