NEW DELHI, August 4 — Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman introduced the Bankers' Books Evidence Bill, 2026 in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, aiming to update legal guidelines regarding financial records in judicial proceedings.

The new bill seeks to replace the British-era Bankers' Books Evidence Act of 1891, adjusting the definition of "bankers' books" to formally include printouts of digital ledgers, database logs, and electronic transaction records as certified legal evidence. The change aims to simplify court trials involving banking fraud and online transactions.

Separately, the Finance Minister also moved the Taxation and Other Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026 for consideration in the house to adjust administrative tax compliance guidelines.

Parliamentary bills and banking sector reforms are regularly tested in General Awareness sections. Candidates should note that the Bankers' Books Evidence Bill, 2026 modernises the 1891 act to formally recognise digital database records in judicial proceedings.
