KOHIMA, August 5 — A team of wildlife researchers and zoologists discovered a new species of catfish, named Pseudecheneis likimroensis, in the Likimro River of Nagaland.

The new species was identified during a biodiversity survey in the Kiphire district. It belongs to the genus Pseudecheneis, which is characterized by a specialized thoracic adhesive disc that allows the fish to attach to rocks in fast-flowing hill streams. The discovery has been published in an international journal of taxonomy.

Wildlife experts stated that the finding highlights the rich, unexplored aquatic biodiversity of the rivers in the northeastern states, calling for conservation efforts to protect hill stream ecosystems.

Scientific discoveries and geographic locations are important current affairs topics. Candidates should note that the new species was found in Nagaland's Likimro River, which is part of the larger Brahmaputra river basin.
