NEW DELHI, August 11 — The national debate on the post-2026 delimitation exercise remains in focus, concerning the reallocation of parliamentary constituencies based on the upcoming census.

The 84th Constitutional Amendment Act, 2001, had frozen the delimitation of Lok Sabha constituencies until the year 2026. As the freeze period ends, regional administrations and polity experts have raised concerns regarding the potential impact on seat distribution between southern and northern states due to varying population growth rates.

Constitutional experts have suggested various options, including increasing the total number of parliamentary seats or adopting special weighting formulas.

Constitutional amendments and seat allocation are core parts of the Indian Polity syllabus. Candidates should know that delimitation commissions are established under Article 82 of the Constitution, and their orders cannot be challenged in any court of law.
