NEW DELHI, October 7 — The Ministry of Heavy Industries on Wednesday formally operationalized the 'PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement' (PM E-DRIVE) scheme, deploying a Cabinet-approved budgetary corpus of ₹10,900 crore over a two-year window to accelerate nationwide adoption of electric vehicles.
Superseding the erstwhile Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles (FAME-II) scheme, the revamped initiative delivers targeted demand incentives across key commercial and mass-transit vehicular segments. The funding roadmap allocates subsidies to support 2.48 million electric two-wheelers (e-2Ws), 316,000 electric three-wheelers (e-3Ws), 14,028 state transport undertaking (STU) electric buses, and dedicated fleets of electric emergency medical ambulances.
To eliminate range anxiety bottlenecks, the scheme earmarks ₹2,000 crore exclusively for installing 88,500 public EV fast-chargers across designated expressways, fuel retail outlets, and Tier-1 urban nodes. Beneficiary automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) must comply with stringent domestic value addition mandates under the Phased Manufacturing Programme (PMP) to qualify for electronic subsidy vouchers authenticated via the centralized Aadhaar-linked e-voucher portal.
Electric mobility policy frameworks, Phased Manufacturing Programme criteria, battery ecosystem industrialization, and India's transport decarbonization targets under the National Electric Mobility Mission Plan (NEMMP) represent core concepts across UPSC Civil Services (GS-III: Infrastructure & Industrial Policy). Candidates should note that FAME-I was launched by the Ministry of Heavy Industries in 2015, followed by FAME-II in 2019, with PM E-DRIVE now serving as the apex financial catalyst for commercial EV fleet electrification.
