WASHINGTON D.C., October 11 — The International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Sunday released its flagship October 'World Economic Outlook' (WEO) report ahead of the IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings, projecting India’s real GDP to expand at 7.0 percent in FY 2026-27 and reaffirming India's position as the fastest-growing major economy globally amidst subdued 3.2 percent world output growth.
According to the Fund’s macroeconomic assessment, India's growth trajectory is underpinned by sustained central government capital expenditure on physical infrastructure, resilient rural private consumption following favorable monsoon distributions, and productivity multipliers generated by India's Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI). India currently accounts for nearly 18 percent of total global economic growth expansion.
The IMF report lauded India’s prudent fiscal consolidation roadmap and proactive monetary management by the Reserve Bank of India in anchoring headline inflation within the statutory tolerance band, while recommending continued structural reforms in labor force participation, trade facilitation, and private manufacturing investment under Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes.
Bretton Woods institutional architecture (IMF and World Bank established in 1944, headquartered in Washington D.C.), flagship IMF publications (World Economic Outlook and Global Financial Stability Report), Special Drawing Rights (SDR currency basket comprising USD, EUR, CNY, JPY, and GBP), and IMF Quota formulas are high-frequency examination topics across UPSC Civil Services (GS-II & GS-III) and RBI Grade B recruitment.
