NEW DELHI, October 15 — The Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, on Wednesday released the preliminary external merchandise trade data for September 2026, revealing that outbound shipments grew by 4.2 percent year-on-year to reach $35.42 billion.
The export surge was spearheaded by electronics goods (which expanded 21.4 percent), pharmaceutical formulations (up 8.5 percent), and specialized engineering fabrications (up 7.8 percent). Concurrently, merchandise imports settled at $56.80 billion, narrowing the monthly merchandise trade deficit to $21.38 billion, anchored by reduced non-essential gold and crude procurement.
Commerce officials noted that structural policy support under Foreign Trade Policy (FTP) 2023, accompanied by the operationalization of district export hubs and bilateral Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreements (CEPAs), has established durable resilience for domestic exporters navigating transatlantic shipping disruptions.
The components of India's Balance of Payments (BoP), the macroeconomic implications of the Current Account Deficit (CAD), strategic objectives of the Foreign Trade Policy 2023 (targeting $2 trillion in aggregate exports by 2030), and export promotion frameworks represent essential concepts in UPSC Civil Services (GS-III: Economic Development) and RBI Grade B examinations.
