NEW DELHI, October 15 — The Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Ministry of Communications, on Wednesday notified the regulatory roadmap for experimental spectrum allocation backing the 'Bharat 6G Mission' and administrative assignments for satellite-based broadband services under the Telecommunications Act 2023.
The framework simplifies provisional testing authorizations for academic institutions, technology startups, and telecom operators seeking to experiment across sub-terahertz and Terahertz bands (above 100 GHz). Additionally, administrative pricing norms have been operationalized for non-geostationary satellite orbit (NGSO) constellations to extend broadband links into geographically isolated border habitations.
Telecommunications officials highlighted that early access to sub-THz frequencies empowers domestic innovators to generate foundational standard essential patents (SEPs) under the International Telecommunication Union's (ITU) IMT-2030 framework, positioning India as a primary architect of next-generation mobile technologies.
The statutory paradigm of the Telecommunications Act 2023, the supervisory duties of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI Act 1997), orbit dynamics of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) vs Geostationary (GEO) satellites, and national spectrum management policies represent core syllabus areas in UPSC Civil Services (GS-III: Science, Technology & Infrastructure) and state administrative exams.
