NEW DELHI, October 15 — The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) on Wednesday formally promulgated the governance framework and operational roadmap establishing the India Semiconductor R&D Center (ISRC) under the flagship ₹76,000-crore India Semiconductor Mission (ISM).
Envisioned as a premier standalone research entity modeled on global institutions like IMEC, the ISRC will drive cutting-edge breakthroughs across silicon photonics, wide bandgap compound semiconductors (Gallium Nitride and Silicon Carbide), automated electronic design automation (EDA) workflows, and next-generation heterogeneous packaging.
MeitY officials emphasized that anchoring sovereign semiconductor intellectual property (IP) within domestic research hubs bridges the gap between academic innovation and commercial high-volume wafer fabrication, directly feeding talent and technology into commercial OSAT and foundry projects under construction across Gujarat and Assam.
The strategic mandate of the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), the Design Linked Incentive (DLI) scheme, physical properties of wide bandgap semiconductors, critical materials diplomacy, and industrial self-reliance paradigms represent staple themes in UPSC Civil Services (GS-III: Science and Technology & Industrial Policy) and technical examinations.
