NEW DELHI, October 19 — The Ministry of Jal Shakti alongside the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) released the 'Dynamic Ground Water Resource Assessment Report 2026' on Monday, confirming sustained nationwide improvement in aquifer replenishment and water-table stability.
The comprehensive hydrological assessment pegged India's total annual groundwater recharge at 449.08 Billion Cubic Metres (BCM), with total annual extractable groundwater resources recorded at 407.21 BCM against aggregate annual withdrawals of 241.34 BCM. Consequently, the national stage of groundwater extraction stands at 59.23%, categorized securely within 'Safe' baseline parameters, accompanied by a 3.5% reduction in categorized 'Over-exploited' assessment assessment units across northwestern agricultural belts.
The Ministry attributed the expanding water-table resilience to nationwide artificial recharge structures constructed under the Jal Shakti Abhiyan: Catch the Rain, community-driven water budgeting under the Atal Bhujal Yojana, and the rejuvenation of over 68,000 rural water bodies under Mission Amrit Sarovar.
The regulatory role of the Central Ground Water Authority (CGWA constituted under Section 3(3) of the Environment Protection Act 1986), the hydrogeology of alluvial versus hard-rock aquifers in India, Atal Bhujal Yojana funding modalities (World Bank 50:50 partnership), and SDG-6 targets are staple themes in UPSC GS-I (Geography) and GS-III.
