NEW DELHI, October 7 — The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) on Wednesday published the comprehensive recruitment notification for the Combined Geo-Scientist Examination 2027 (CGSE 2027) on its centralized registration portal `upsconline.nic.in`, opening direct recruitment across 120 gazetted Group 'A' scientific officer postings.
According to the official examination dossier, the recruitment intake allocates 95 positions within the Geological Survey of India (GSI) under the Ministry of Mines (comprising Geologist, Geophysicist, and Chemist cadres) and 25 specialist Scientist 'B' (Hydrogeology, Chemical, and Geophysics) vacancies within the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) under the Ministry of Jal Shakti. Candidates holding a Master's degree in Geological Sciences, Applied Geology, Geophysics, or Chemistry can submit online applications and exercise zonal preferences through October 27, 2026.
The tripartite selection mechanism comprises the Stage-I Computer-Based Preliminary Examination scheduled for February 8, 2027, evaluating General Studies and discipline-specific fundamentals (400 aggregate marks); the Stage-II Conventional Descriptive Main Examination (600 marks) in June 2027; and the apex Stage-III Personality Test (200 marks) conducted in New Delhi. Only aspirants securing qualifying sectional benchmarks in Stage-I will be permitted to sit for Stage-II.
The institutional legacy of the Geological Survey of India (constituted in 1851), the statutory oversight of the Central Ground Water Board, and critical mineral exploratory governance under the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act feature prominently in scientific and civil service examinations. Candidates should note that GSI is headquartered in Kolkata and serves as the principal custodian of national geological mapping, while CGWB provides apex technical advice on sustainable aquifer recharge and groundwater balance assessments.
