If you finished BDS in Madhya Pradesh and you're tired of clinic salaries that barely cover your loan EMI, the MPPSC Dental Surgeon post is probably the best government option you have in the state. It's a Class 2 gazetted job under the Public Health and Family Welfare Department, and MPPSC ran a huge cycle in 2025 with 385 posts.
Here's the honest part. As of end July 2026, MPPSC has not released a fresh Dental Surgeon advertisement. The last one came out on 31 December 2024, the exam happened on 12 October 2025, and the appointment process from that cycle is still working through. So everything below is built on that last cycle. Treat it as your reference, not as a promise about 2026 dates.

MPPSC publishes a yearly tentative calendar, but recruitment exams like Dental Surgeon are usually added only when the department sends the vacancy demand. Any "2026 exam date out" headline you see on a coaching site right now is guesswork. Check exam news updates and the commission site itself before you believe a date.
What the job actually is
You are posted as a Dental Surgeon in a government hospital, a district hospital, a civil hospital or a community health centre somewhere in MP. Early postings are usually rural or semi-urban. Sagar, Shahdol, Balaghat, Dindori — that kind of district. If you're hoping for Bhopal or Indore in year one, adjust your expectations.
Day to day, it's OPD heavy. Extractions, restorations, scaling, RCT where the setup allows, minor oral surgery, and a lot of screening. You'll also do school health camps and tobacco cessation counselling under the National Oral Health Programme. Add paperwork: registers, monthly reports to the CMHO, NHM data entry. Two years of probation at the start.
The good news is the hours. Government OPD timings are fixed, you get proper leave, and nobody is asking you to hit a monthly revenue target.

MPPSC medical and dental recruitment has historically allowed relaxation stretching to around 55 years in some special cases under state rules, so read the actual advertisement clause instead of trusting a table on any website, including this one.
Education
BDS from a Dental Council of India recognised institution, plus permanent registration with the Madhya Pradesh State Dental Council. That registration part trips people up every cycle. If you studied outside MP, start the MP council registration process early. It is not a same week job.
Domicile
Non MP candidates can apply, but they are treated as unreserved and they pay the higher fee. All reservation benefits and age relaxation go only to MP domicile candidates.

On negative marking, reports from the 2025 cycle differ. Some sources listed a penalty, the answer key notice suggested none. Read the marking clause in the fresh advertisement and do not assume.

General Knowledge (50 questions)
This part is basically MPPSC prelims lite, and it's where dentists lose marks because they ignore it.

- MP history and culture: Gond and Maratha rule, freedom movement in MP, Khajuraho, Sanchi, Bhimbetka.

- Geography and Indian economy at a basic level.
- General science, environment, health science.
- Current affairs of the last 12 months, national and state.
- Basic reasoning and elementary maths in some papers.

Public Health Dentistry deserves extra attention. It is scoring, it repeats, and most candidates treat it as a throwaway subject.

The post sits in the Rs 15,600 to 39,100 pay band with Rs 5,400 grade pay, which maps to Level 11 style pay in the current structure.

Growth path: Dental Surgeon, then Senior Dental Surgeon, then Assistant Director or Deputy Director level posts in the health directorate. Promotion is slow and depends on vacancies. Many surgeons also use the job's stability to do a PG through in service quotas.
Previous year cut-off
MPPSC does not publish clean category wise cut-offs for this post the way it does for State Service. From candidate reporting after the 2022 and 2025 cycles, a general category score in the region of 250 to 280 out of 450 has been enough to reach the interview stage, with SC and ST cut-offs falling well below that. Treat those numbers as rough talk, not official data. Aim for 300 plus and stop worrying about it.
Books and preparation strategy
For dental subjects, stick to what you already own. Standard BDS textbooks plus one MDS question bank. Soben Peter for Public Health Dentistry, Shafer or Rajendran for Oral Pathology, Neelima Malik or Balaji for Oral Surgery, Grossman for Endodontics, and any of the NEET MDS review series for rapid revision.
A workable four month plan:
Month 1: Two dental subjects a week using MCQ based revision, not full textbook reading. Start 30 minutes a day of MP GK.
Month 2: Finish the remaining dental subjects. Add MP polity, economy and schemes. Begin daily current affairs.
Month 3: Full revision round two, faster. Start weekly full length mocks from the free online test series. Fix weak chapters with topic-wise practice sets.
Month 4: Mock, analyse, revise. Nothing new. Two GK revisions and one full dental revision.

Common mistakes and honest advice
Most BDS candidates prepare only dental and score 80 out of 100 there, then get 15 out of 50 in GK and miss the list. Fifty questions carrying 150 marks is one third of the paper. Ignoring it is the single biggest reason good clinicians fail this exam.
Second mistake: leaving MP Dental Council registration for later. No registration, no application, no argument.
Third: skipping the interview prep. Fifty marks decides a lot when hundreds of people cluster within ten marks of each other. Know your final year subjects, know MP's health schemes, know why you want a government posting.
