MPPSC Assistant Professor puts you in a state government college with a Level 10 pay scale, a real teaching career, and a pension-linked service record. What the job actually is
You teach undergraduate and postgraduate students in a Madhya Pradesh government college. That's the core of it. Expect 14 to 18 teaching hours a week, plus exam duty, internal assessment, admission counselling and whatever committee your principal drops on you.
Postings are across MP, and your first college is often in a smaller town like Chhatarpur, Sidhi or Balaghat rather than Bhopal or Indore. Transfers to bigger cities happen with seniority, not on day one. The upside is real though: light workload compared to most sarkari jobs, long vacations, freedom to do research or a PhD alongside, and social respect that a clerical post will never give you.

Science subjects carry the fat numbers. If you're a Chemistry or Physics postgraduate, your odds this year are genuinely good. Yogic Science with 2 posts is close to a lottery.
Eligibility
Education: Master's degree in the relevant subject with at least 55% marks, plus UGC NET, CSIR NET or MP SET. A PhD holder who followed UGC 2009 or 2016 regulations is exempt from NET/SET.
Relaxation in marks: SC, ST and PwD candidates get 5% relaxation, so 50% in the Master's is enough.
Age: 21 to 40 years, calculated as on 1 January 2025.

Steps to apply, for the next cycle:
- Register on the MPPSC portal at mppsc.mp.gov.in and get your One Time Registration number.
- Fill the form with your subject, category and qualification details.
- Upload photo and signature in the given size.
- Pay through the MP Online kiosk or net banking.
- Save the printout. You'll need the application number for the admit card.
Use the correction window if you make a mistake. MPPSC does not entertain corrections later.

Each right answer gives 4 marks. Wrong answers cost you 0.25 negative marks. Both papers are objective, and both are usually held on the same day.
Note the weight: Paper 2 is 600 of 800 written marks. Your subject knowledge decides this exam. Paper 1 is the tiebreaker.
Detailed syllabus
Paper 1 (General Studies, 200 marks)
Unit 1 - History and Culture of MP: Major dynasties (Paramaras, Chandelas, Gonds), heritage sites like Khajuraho, Sanchi and Bhimbetka, tribal communities, folk arts and festivals, MP's role in the freedom movement, important literary and cultural figures.
Unit 2 - Geography of MP: Rivers, plateaus, forests and national parks, climate, soil, minerals, irrigation and power projects, conventional and non-conventional energy.
Unit 3 - Polity, Governance and Economy: MP Vidhan Sabha, Panchayati Raj, state administration, agriculture and industry, welfare schemes, census and demographic data.
Unit 4 - Current Affairs: National and international events, awards, sports, science and technology, policy news. Keep up with daily current affairs instead of cramming a year in the last week.
Unit 5 - Information and Communication Technology: Computer basics, internet, e-governance in MP, cyber security, AI, cloud computing, networking fundamentals.

Paper 2 (Subject paper, 600 marks)
There's a separate syllabus PDF for each of the 25-plus subjects on the MPPSC site. Broadly, it maps to a standard UGC NET Paper 2 syllabus plus PG-level depth. If you cleared NET in your subject, you already know 80% of it. What's extra is the depth on classical and foundational topics, and a few MP-linked questions in subjects like History, Geography and Sociology.

That's a strong starting package by state government standards. Growth goes through the Career Advancement Scheme: Assistant Professor Level 10, then Level 11 and 12, then Associate Professor at Level 13A, then Professor at Level 14. Principal posts and Higher Education Department roles open up later. Complete your PhD if you don't have one, because promotions above Associate Professor need it.
Previous year cut-off
MPPSC doesn't publish clean category-wise cut-off marks for this post, and the marks vary sharply by subject. From past selection lists, a general candidate in a big subject like Hindi, History or Political Science usually needed roughly 55 to 62 percent of written marks to reach the interview. Small subjects with under 10 posts have gone higher. Treat any number circulating online as an estimate, not a fact.
Books and preparation strategy
For Paper 2, your PG textbooks and NET standard material are enough. Add previous year MPPSC and UGC NET papers of your subject. Nothing beats solving old papers here.
For Paper 1, split it in two. MP portion: one good MP General Knowledge book, read three times, plus the state economic survey summary. National and current affairs: last 12 months of news, done in short daily doses.
A rough three-month plan if you're starting fresh:
- Month 1: Full revision of your subject syllabus, unit by unit. Thirty minutes daily on MP history and geography.
- Month 2: Solve two subject papers a week. Finish MP polity, economy and ICT. Start topic-wise practice sets.
- Month 3: Full-length free mock tests under exam timing, then error analysis. Revise current affairs and weak units only.

Common mistakes and honest advice
Most candidates over-prepare Paper 1 and under-prepare Paper 2. That's backwards. Six hundred marks are in your subject.
Second mistake: guessing wildly. With 0.25 negative marking on 4-mark questions, a blind guess costs you real ground. Attempt when you can eliminate two options, skip otherwise.
Third: ignoring the MP-specific portion because it feels boring. It's scoring, it's factual, and it separates people at the top.
And be honest about the maths. Nine hundred and forty-nine posts against lakhs of NET-qualified postgraduates in MP. Competition is brutal in the arts subjects. If your subject has under 20 posts, keep a parallel plan going, whether that's SET, another state's recruitment, or a graduate-level exam like SSC CGL.
