If you have a B.V.Sc. & A.H. degree and you want a government job in Madhya Pradesh, this is one of the very few doors open to you. The MPPSC Veterinary recruitment doesn't come every year. When it comes, everyone with a vet degree in the state applies. So the fight is small but sharp.
The 2026 cycle is already running. The notification came out in March, applications closed in May, and the written exam is on 2 August 2026. Admit cards are already live. If you applied, you have days left, not months. If you missed it, read this anyway so you're ready when the next advertisement drops.

One thing worth flagging. MPPSC's late fee structure is unusual and expensive. Rs 25,000 to apply late is not a typo. Apply in the normal window next time.
What the job actually is
A Veterinary Assistant Surgeon is the doctor in charge of a government veterinary hospital or dispensary in Madhya Pradesh, working under the Directorate of Animal Husbandry and Dairying.
Your day is mostly clinical. Farmers bring in cattle, buffalo, goats, poultry. You diagnose, treat, do minor surgery, handle difficult calvings, run deworming and vaccination drives. Beyond the clinic there's artificial insemination work, disease surveillance and the paperwork that comes with every livestock scheme.
Postings are rural. That's the honest truth. Most dispensaries sit in blocks and tehsils, not in Bhopal or Indore. If you want a city posting from day one, this job will disappoint you. The Assistant Director and Veterinary Extension Officer posts lean more towards administration and field extension than daily practice.

The 45-year ceiling is absolute. Relaxation applies only to Madhya Pradesh domicile candidates. Candidates from other states are treated as General for both age and fee, no exceptions.
Education
Bachelor's degree in Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry (B.V.Sc. & A.H.) from a recognised university. You also need registration with the Madhya Pradesh State Veterinary Council or the Veterinary Council of India before the date of the advertisement. This registration trips people up every cycle. Get it done early.
Domicile and physical standards
MP domicile is not compulsory to apply, but without it you lose fee concession, age relaxation and reservation benefit. There is no physical standard test and no running. It's a professional post, judged on knowledge.

Applications go through the MPOnline portal linked from the MPPSC website. The steps are simple: register on MPOnline, fill the form with your degree and council registration details, upload photo and signature in the given size, pay by net banking or card, then save the printout. Keep the transaction ID.
Exam pattern
One written paper, offline, OMR based. Both sections are attempted in the same three-hour window.

Each question carries 3 marks. There is negative marking of 1 mark for a wrong answer. Duration is 3 hours. The paper is bilingual, Hindi and English.
After the written exam, shortlisted candidates face an interview of 50 marks. Final merit is written plus interview, followed by document verification.
Read the negative marking again. One-third of a question's value is gone if you guess wrong. On a 450-mark paper with a tight cutoff, reckless guessing has ended more careers here than weak preparation.
Detailed syllabus
Section A: General Studies (50 questions, 150 marks)
This is heavily Madhya Pradesh focused. Don't prepare it like a UPSC paper.
MP History and Culture: ancient and medieval MP, the Gonds, Bundelas and Holkars, freedom movement in MP, tribal communities and their customs, folk dances and folk music, fairs and festivals, important literary figures.
MP Geography: rivers of MP including the Narmada, Chambal, Tapti and Betwa, forests and national parks, tiger reserves, minerals, soil types, climate, crops and irrigation projects.
MP Polity and Administration: state legislature, panchayati raj in MP, districts and divisions, state commissions, major welfare schemes.
MP Economy: agriculture and livestock economy, industries, power projects, tourism, budget highlights.
National and International Current Affairs: last 10 to 12 months, with extra weight on anything touching animal husbandry, dairy, veterinary policy and rural development. Keep up using the daily current affairs section.
Information and Communication Technology: basics of computers, internet, e-governance in MP, digital initiatives.

Section B: Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science (100 questions, 300 marks)
This is your degree, tested as MCQs. The spread is wide but the depth is undergraduate level.
Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry: gross and microscopic anatomy of domestic animals, comparative anatomy, digestion in ruminants, endocrinology, reproductive physiology, blood and circulation, metabolism, enzymes, vitamins and minerals.
Animal Nutrition: feed classification, proximate analysis, ration formulation for cattle, buffalo, sheep, goat and poultry, feed additives, fodder crops, silage and hay, deficiency disorders.
Genetics and Animal Breeding: Mendelian and population genetics, heritability, selection methods, breeding systems, Indian and exotic breeds of cattle, buffalo, goat, sheep, pig and poultry, crossbreeding programmes.
Livestock Production and Management: dairy farm management, housing systems, calf rearing, poultry management including broiler and layer operations, sheep and goat farming, piggery, record keeping, farm economics.
Animal Reproduction and Gynaecology: oestrous cycle, artificial insemination, semen collection and evaluation, pregnancy diagnosis, dystocia and its handling, infertility, embryo transfer, reproductive disorders.
Pathology and Microbiology: general and systemic pathology, bacteriology, virology, mycology, immunology, post mortem technique.
Medicine and Preventive Medicine: clinical diagnosis, infectious diseases including FMD, HS, black quarter, brucellosis, rabies, PPR and ranikhet, parasitic diseases, metabolic and deficiency diseases, zoonoses, vaccination schedules, epidemiology and disease control programmes.
Pharmacology and Toxicology: drug classes and mechanisms, antimicrobials, anaesthetics, drug residues and withdrawal periods, common poisonings and antidotes.
Surgery and Radiology: anaesthesia, wound management, common large and small animal surgeries, orthopaedics, radiographic diagnosis.
Livestock Products Technology and Food Hygiene: milk composition and processing, milk products, meat inspection, abattoir practice, egg quality, food safety standards.
Veterinary Extension and Jurisprudence: extension methods, dairy cooperatives, government livestock schemes, veterinary legislation and council rules, animal welfare acts.
Salary and career growth
The pay scale is Rs 15,600 to Rs 39,100 with Grade Pay Rs 5,400, which maps to Level 12 of the 7th Pay Commission matrix.

That is a genuinely strong starting salary for a fresh graduate in MP. Add government quarters at many postings, medical benefits and NPS.
Promotion path runs Veterinary Assistant Surgeon, then Senior Veterinary Officer or Assistant Director, then Deputy Director, then Joint Director and Director of the department. Promotions here are seniority-driven and slow, but the job is stable and the private practice option always stays open on the side.
Previous year cut-off
MPPSC does not publish a clean category-wise cutoff table for this exam the way it does for the State Service Exam. What is available is the final selection list with obtained marks from the 2023 cycle.

Treat these as rough guidance from candidate-reported data, not official figures. With 80 posts instead of 192, expect the 2026 bar to move up by 10 to 20 marks. Aim for 300 plus and stop worrying about the cutoff.
Books and preparation strategy
For Section B, don't buy new textbooks now. Your college books are the syllabus. Revise from what you already annotated.
Standard references that work: Radostits for Veterinary Medicine, Banerjee for Animal Husbandry and Livestock Production, Roberts for Reproduction and Obstetrics, Tyagi and Singh for Dairy Science, and any good ICAR JRF or NET objective question bank. The ICAR NET and AIPVE question banks are the single best proxy for the paper's style.
For Section A, one MP GK book in your preferred language covers most of it. Add monthly current affairs.
If the exam is a week away, here's the plan. Spend 60 percent of your time on Section B objective revision, 25 percent on MP GK, and 15 percent on full-length mocks. If you have three months, invert the first month: build MP GK from zero, then shift to vet revision.
Whatever your timeline, take timed mock tests. Sitting for three hours with 150 questions is a skill separate from knowing the answers. Use the free online test series to build that stamina and the topic-wise practice sets for weak areas. A structured study plan helps if you tend to drift.

Common mistakes and honest advice
Skipping Section A is the biggest one. Vet graduates assume 150 marks of General Studies will take care of itself and focus only on their subject. It doesn't. MP GK is specific and dry, and candidates who prepared it properly are the ones who clear.
Guessing without control is the second. With 1 mark negative, attempting 145 out of 150 blindly is worse than attempting 120 with confidence. Know your line.
Third, ignoring registration with the state veterinary council until the last week. No registration, no application, whatever your marks.
Fourth, treating this as a backup while pursuing PG. It works only if you're honest about the split. Half preparation for both usually yields neither.
And be realistic about the numbers. Eighty posts against thousands of vet graduates across MP is not an easy exam. But compared to a general exam like SSC CGL, where you compete with every graduate in India, your competition pool here is tiny and technical. That's the real advantage of a professional-post exam. Use it.
