The 2026 cycle is already deep into its process. The exam is done, the answer key is out, and lakhs of candidates are sitting and waiting for the result. If you missed this cycle, read this anyway. The pattern barely changes, and the next advertisement will follow the same shape.

The Madhya Pradesh Employees Selection Board (MPESB, the old Vyapam) released this recruitment on 28 February 2026 as a combined advertisement covering Van Rakshak, Kshetra Rakshak (Field Guard), Jail Prahari and Assistant Jail Superintendent.

What the job actually is
A Van Rakshak is the ground-level worker of the MP Forest Department. You are posted to a beat inside a range. Your beat could be a patch near a village or deep inside a sanctuary like Kanha, Bandhavgarh, Pench or Satpura.
Daily work is patrolling. You walk your beat, check for illegal cutting, watch for poaching signs, note animal movement, and report to the Deputy Ranger. In summer you fight fires and cut fire lines. In monsoon you handle plantation work and nursery duty. When a leopard or tiger enters a village, you are the first person there, holding the crowd back until the rescue team arrives.
Be honest with yourself before applying. This is an outdoor job in remote posting. Mobile network is patchy. Quarters are basic. If you want a chair and a fan, this is not your post. If you like the outdoors and want a stable pay slip, it's a very good deal.

The advertisement started with 728 Van Rakshak posts and 169 Kshetra Rakshak posts. The board later revised the forest wing numbers upward to about 1,111 posts, of which roughly 1,007 are direct recruitment and 104 are backlog posts.

Take the exact category-wise split from the official PDF only. Aggregator sites, including the ones you searched last night, keep printing different totals because the board issued a revised list mid-cycle.
Eligibility
Education: 10th pass from MP Board or any recognised board. That is the whole requirement. Graduates apply for it too, which is exactly why the competition is heavy.

Domicile: Open to all Indians, but the fat age relaxation and fee concession go only to MP residents. Outside candidates are treated as unreserved.

The walk is qualifying only. It adds no marks. But people fail it every single cycle because they never practised. Four hours of continuous walking with no stopping is harder than it sounds on paper.

Steps to apply when the next form opens:
- Get your MP Online profile registration done first. Without it the form will not accept you.
- Go to esb.mp.gov.in, open the advertisement, read the PDF fully.
- Fill personal details exactly as on your 10th marksheet. One spelling difference causes rejection at document verification.
- Upload photo and signature in the given size.
- Pay online and save the receipt.
- Use the correction window if you made an error. After it closes, nothing can be changed.

Because there is no negative marking, attempt all 100. Leaving a question blank is a pure loss.
Subject split is not fixed question by question in the notification, but the paper reliably breaks down close to this: General Knowledge and MP GK around 30, General Hindi around 20, General Maths around 20, General Science and Environment around 20, General English around 10.
Detailed syllabus
General Knowledge and MP GK. MP geography, rivers like Narmada, Chambal, Betwa and Tapti, national parks and tiger reserves, tribes of MP, folk dances, fairs, historical sites, MP government schemes, districts and divisions, current affairs of the last 8 to 10 months, Indian polity basics, freedom movement, sports and awards. MP-specific questions are the biggest chunk. Keep a separate notebook for them and pair it with our current affairs updates and the General Awareness complete guide.
General Hindi. Sandhi, samas, upsarg, pratyay, paryayvachi, vilom, tatsam-tadbhav, muhavare and lokoktiyan, vakya shuddhi, ashuddhi sanshodhan, ling and vachan, short passage. This is scoring. Do not skip it.
General English. Tenses, articles, prepositions, active-passive, direct-indirect, synonyms, antonyms, one word substitution, spotting errors, a short comprehension. Only about 10 questions, so keep it basic.
General Mathematics. Number system, LCM and HCF, simplification, percentage, ratio and proportion, average, profit and loss, simple and compound interest, time and work, time speed distance, mensuration, basic data interpretation. General Science and Environment. Physics: motion, force, light, sound, electricity. Chemistry: matter, acids and bases, metals and non-metals, everyday chemicals. Biology: human body systems, nutrition, diseases, plants. Environment: ecosystem, food chain, biodiversity, pollution, Wildlife Protection Act 1972, Forest Conservation Act, Project Tiger, endangered species of MP.

Salary and career growth
Van Rakshak sits in pay level 3 of the MP pay matrix, the old scale being Rs 5,200 to 20,200 with grade pay Rs 1,900. Gross pay works out to roughly Rs 19,500 to Rs 25,000 per month at start, depending on posting and DA.
Add-ons include dearness allowance, house rent allowance or department quarters, uniform allowance, and a hard-duty or field element in some ranges. In-hand after deductions usually lands around Rs 18,000 to Rs 22,000 in the first year. Quarters inside the forest area save you rent entirely, which matters more than the number looks.
Promotion path: Van Rakshak, then Deputy Ranger (Upvanpal), then Forest Ranger, then Deputy Ranger Officer level posts. Departmental exams and seniority both count. Many people who joined as guards clear the Ranger departmental route within 10 to 12 years.
Previous year cut-off
Official category-wise cut-offs for 2026 are not out. Use these expected and past-trend numbers as a rough target, not gospel.

Read that table again. A General male candidate needs roughly 73 out of 100 with no negative marking. That means accuracy, not just attempts. The paper is easy. The cut-off is not.
Books and preparation strategy
Keep the book list short. Lucent GK for general portion, an MP-specific GK book by Rakesh Dwivedi or McGraw Hill MP GK, NCERT Science class 6 to 10, RS Aggarwal for arithmetic, and Lucent Samanya Hindi. That's enough. Our free Reading Room covers most of this without you spending anything.
Month 1. Finish MP GK once end to end. Do NCERT Science class 6 to 8. Start arithmetic from percentage and ratio.
Month 2. NCERT Science 9 and 10, environment and wildlife acts, Hindi grammar full, arithmetic up to time and work. Start walking 8 to 10 km every morning.
Month 3. Revise MP GK a second time, do current affairs of the last 8 months, finish remaining maths chapters, and give two full mocks a week from our free mock test series. Push the walk to 20 km twice a week.
Last 3 weeks. Only revision, previous year papers and mocks. Nothing new. Build your week around our ready-made study plan.
Honest advice and common mistakes
The most common mistake is treating this as a low-level exam. It is 10th standard content, yes, but the cut-off sits above 70 because graduates and postgraduates are fighting for the same seat. Competition is brutal.
Second mistake is ignoring MP GK. Candidates from other states apply, do well in maths and science, and then lose 20 marks on MP rivers and sanctuaries. Those 20 marks are the whole game.
Third mistake is ignoring the walk until the result comes out. People fail 25 km in 4 hours after clearing the written paper. That is a wasted year. Start walking now.
Fourth, do not leave blanks. No negative marking means a wild guess is free money.
