MPPSC DSP 2026: Vacancy, Eligibility, Exam Pattern, Syllabus and Salary

If you grew up in Madhya Pradesh and ever pictured yourself in khaki with a star on the shoulder, this is the exam. DSP is the highest police post you can reach straight through a state exam, and in MP it comes through the MPPSC State Service Examination. There's no separate DSP exam. You write the same paper as future Deputy Collectors, and your rank decides police or revenue.

Now the honest part. There are 18 DSP posts this cycle and lakhs of graduates in MP chasing them. But the syllabus is fixed, the pattern is public, and people from small towns clear it every year. Here's what actually matters.

Latest notification and important dates

The MPPSC State Service Examination 2026 notification is already out. It came on 31 December 2025 and the prelims were held on 26 April 2026. The prelims result came out on 22 May 2026, so the current cycle is now at the mains stage.

What the job actually is

A DSP in Madhya Pradesh is a gazetted police officer. Right after training you're usually posted as a Sub-Divisional Officer of Police, which means you supervise a group of police stations in a sub-division. Station House Officers report to you. You review serious cases, sign off on investigations, handle law and order during festivals, elections and protests, and answer to the SP of the district.

The day is long and unpredictable. A morning of file work can turn into a night at a crime scene. You'll handle crowd control, communal tension, dacoity cases in the Chambal belt, cyber fraud in Indore and Bhopal, and a steady load of court appearances. Real authority, real accountability. If you want a predictable 10-to-6 job, pick a different post on your preference list.

Vacancies for DSP have hovered between roughly 10 and 30 in recent cycles. Don't plan your life around one year's number.

Eligibility

Education. A bachelor's degree in any stream from a recognised university. Final year students can apply, but you must produce the degree before the mains or at document verification, as the notification specifies.

Nationality. Indian citizen. Non-MP candidates can apply but they pay the higher fee and get no reservation or age relaxation.

Age (as on 1 January of the exam year). Minimum 21 years. For uniformed posts like DSP the upper limit is lower than for other posts.

Note the gap: non-uniformed posts go up to 40, but DSP stops at 33 for General. Many people find this out too late.

Physical standards. These are checked at the medical stage, not before prelims.

You also need sound vision and general fitness. Candidates are rejected at medical for knock knees, flat feet and colour blindness, so get yourself checked early if you're serious about the police posts.

Steps to apply:

1. Register on the MPPSC portal at mppsc.mp.gov.in and get your profile registration number.
2. Fill the online form and choose post preferences carefully. Your DSP preference decides everything later.
3. Upload photo and signature in the given size, then pay through MP Online or net banking.
4. Save the final PDF. A correction window opens for a few days after the last date, with a small fee.

Exam pattern

MPPSC changed the prelims pattern for 2026. Negative marking is now in.

Each correct answer gives 3 marks and each wrong answer costs 1 mark. Paper II is qualifying, you need 33 per cent in it. Only Paper I decides who goes to mains. Prelims marks do not count in the final merit.

Mains total is 1500 marks. Answers are descriptive and Hindi medium is the norm for most candidates.

Stage 3: Interview

Personality test carries 175 to 185 marks depending on the cycle's notification, so read the current advertisement. Final merit is mains plus interview. After that comes document verification and the medical and physical check for police posts.

Prelims Paper I (General Studies)

• History of India and the freedom movement, plus history and culture of Madhya Pradesh.
• Geography of India and the world, and MP geography: rivers, forests, minerals, climate, tribes.
• Polity and Constitution, Panchayati Raj, MP's administrative structure.
• Indian Economy and planning, MP's economy, agriculture and industry.
• General Science, Environment, health and nutrition.

Prelims Paper II (General Aptitude Test)

• Comprehension passages and Hindi language comprehension.
• Interpersonal skills and communication.
• Logical reasoning, analytical ability and general mental ability.

• Basic numeracy and data interpretation up to class 10 level.

Mains GS I: History and cultural heritage of India and MP, world history, geography of India and MP, water and disaster management.

Mains GS II: Polity, Constitution, governance, social legislation, economy, sociology, human resource development, MP government schemes.

Mains GS III: Science and technology, energy, environment, sustainable development, statistics and data interpretation.

Mains GS IV: Philosophy of thinkers, ethics in public administration, emotional intelligence, attitude, case studies, integrity and probity.

Mains Paper V: Hindi grammar, sentence correction, idioms, letter writing, precis, translation, official terminology. Paper VI: two Hindi essays plus drafting.

Salary and career growth

DSP in MP is placed in Pay Matrix Level with grade pay Rs 5,400. Basic pay starts around Rs 56,100.

You also get government accommodation, an official vehicle with driver and police staff. After about seven years the basic moves to roughly Rs 69,000.

Promotion path: DSP to Additional SP, then SP, and after that IPS through the state promotion quota. Many senior MP officers started exactly here. It's slow, but it happens.

Previous year cut-off

These are prelims cut-offs from the old 200-mark pattern. With the 2026 shift to 300 marks and negative marking, read them as a trend, not a target.

Female cut-offs run 5 to 20 marks lower. The takeaway: MPPSC prelims is a scoring paper, everyone gets the easy questions, and the fight happens at the margin.

Books and preparation strategy

Keep the book list short. People fail here from reading too many sources, not too few.

• NCERT class 6 to 12 for History, Geography, Polity and Economy. Do this once, properly.
• Laxmikanth for Polity, Lucent for quick static revision.
• Any standard MP GK book, plus the MP Economic Survey summary.
• A monthly current affairs magazine and MP news from a local Hindi daily.

Month-wise plan if you have six months:

• Months 1 and 2: NCERTs plus MP History and Geography. One full pass of Polity.
• Month 3: Economy, Science, Environment. Start MP current affairs notes.
• Month 4: Paper II practice twice a week and sectional tests through the topic-wise practice sets.
• Month 5: Full-length mocks on the free online test series. Two a week, and spend more time on analysis than on the test itself.
• Month 6: Revision only. No new books. Three revisions of MP GK.

Prefer a ready daily schedule? Use the study plan and adapt it. And don't park answer writing until after prelims. From month three, write two timed answers a day in Hindi.

Common mistakes and honest advice

Ignoring MP-specific content is the biggest one. A large chunk of Paper I is MP: districts, rivers, tribes, folk dances, schemes, state awards. UPSC-style national prep alone will not clear MPPSC prelims.

Second, people treat Paper II as free marks and then miss the 33 per cent. It's qualifying, not optional.

Third, weak Hindi. Mains is 1500 marks and 300 of those are pure Hindi language and essay. English-medium graduates lose the exam right here.

Fourth, chasing DSP without checking your height. Sounds obvious. It isn't.

Fifth, no mocks. With negative marking in, prelims is an accuracy game. Five full mocks beat a sixth revision.
