If you're a 10th or 12th pass candidate in Madhya Pradesh looking for a stable government job with a uniform, MP Jail Prahari is one of the few doors still open to you. The paper is not hard. The physical test is not brutal either. What makes it tough is the number of people sitting for it.

This cycle, MPESB advertised 757 Jail Prahari posts along with 25 Assistant Jail Superintendent posts. The written exam is already done. If you missed this round, everything below still matters, because the next cycle will follow almost the same pattern. Let's go through it properly.

Latest notification and important dates

The 2026 notification came out on 27 February 2026 under MPESB (Madhya Pradesh Employees Selection Board, the body people still call Vyapam). It was a combined advertisement covering Van Rakshak, Kshetra Rakshak, Jail Prahari and Assistant Jail Superintendent, with 1,679 posts in total.

Do not trust WhatsApp forwards on the result date. As of the end of July 2026, MPESB has not put out the final Jail Prahari result or the PET schedule. Keep checking esb.mp.gov.in and our exam news page.

What the job actually is

A Jail Prahari is a guard in a Madhya Pradesh state prison. You are the first layer of security inside the jail. Your day involves counting prisoners at fixed times, checking barracks and cells, watching the main gate, escorting prisoners to court hearings and hospitals, searching for banned items like phones and tobacco, and reporting anything odd to the head warder.

It's shift work, and nights are part of the deal. Postings are anywhere in MP, from central jails in Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur and Gwalior to district and sub-jails in smaller towns. You get quarters in most jail campuses. If you want a desk job, this isn't it. If you want job security and a uniform at 21, it's a solid pick.

Assistant Jail Superintendent is the graduate-level post above it, with supervisory duties and better pay.

Vacancy details

Post Total UR EWS OBC SC ST
Jail Prahari 757 253 28 204 121 151
Assistant Jail Superintendent 25 8 2 2 5 8

Roughly a third of the Jail Prahari seats are reserved for women under MP's horizontal reservation for female candidates. That, plus the ex-serviceman and home guard quotas, means the effective open competition for a general male candidate is smaller than 253 looks.

Eligibility

Education. For Jail Prahari you need to have passed Class 10 (High School) from a recognised board. Many aspirants have degrees, but 10th is the bar. For Assistant Jail Superintendent you need a bachelor's degree.

Age (as on 1 January 2026).

Category Age limit
UR male (outside MP or open) 18 to 33 years
UR female 18 to 38 years
SC / ST / OBC / EWS of MP 18 to 38 years
MP government employees, corporation staff 18 to 38 years
Assistant Jail Superintendent 21 to 33 / 38 years (same pattern)

Extra relaxation applies to ex-servicemen, home guards and PwD candidates as per MP government rules. Read the actual advertisement PDF for your exact case, not a coaching poster.

Domicile. Anyone can apply, but reservation benefits and the lower fee are only for permanent residents of Madhya Pradesh. Outside candidates are treated as unreserved.

Physical standards (last cycle).

Standard Male Female
Height 165 cm 158 cm
Chest 79 cm, with 5 cm expansion Not applicable
800 m run Within 2 minutes 50 seconds Within 4 minutes

The run is the part people underestimate. 800 metres in under 2:50 sounds easy until you try it after two years of sitting and studying.

Application process and fee

Category Fee
General / EWS / outside MP Rs 500
SC / ST / OBC of MP Rs 250
Kiosk / portal charge Rs 60 (approx, extra)

How to apply, when the next window opens:

  1. Register on the MPESB portal at esb.mp.gov.in and get your profile number.
  2. Fill the online form with your 10th details, category and domicile information.
  3. Upload a recent photo and signature in the given size.
  4. Pay online through the KIOSK or net banking option.
  5. Save the PDF and the payment receipt. Use the correction window if you made a mistake, since MPESB charges for corrections.

Exam pattern

One paper. No interview.

Feature Detail
Mode Computer based test
Questions 100
Marks 100
Duration 2 hours
Marking 1 mark per question, no negative marking

Normalisation Applied, since the exam runs over many shifts

Section split is roughly:

Subject Questions
General Knowledge and MP GK 40
General Hindi 15
General English 15
General Mathematics 15
General Science and Reasoning 15

Selection stages: written exam, then physical standard and efficiency test, then document verification and medical. The written score decides the merit; the physical test is only qualifying.

Detailed syllabus

General Knowledge and MP GK. This is the section that decides your rank. Madhya Pradesh history, Gond and Maratha rule, freedom movement in MP, geography of the state, rivers like Narmada, Chambal, Tapti and Betwa, national parks and wildlife sanctuaries, tribes, folk dances and festivals, major crops and irrigation projects, minerals, state government schemes, MP tourism spots, and famous personalities of MP. Add national polity, Indian history basics, and current affairs of the last twelve months. Build the base with our General Awareness complete guide and revise monthly from the current affairs section.

General Hindi. Sandhi, samas, upsarg, pratyay, paryayvachi, vilom, muhavare and lokoktiyan, ashuddh vakya shodhan, tatsam-tadbhav, and simple comprehension. Straightforward marks if you revise a grammar book once.

General English. Spotting errors, fill in the blanks, synonyms and antonyms, one word substitution, active-passive, direct-indirect, cloze test and a short passage. Class 10 level, nothing more.

General Mathematics. Simplification, number system, LCM and HCF, percentage, ratio, average, profit and loss, simple and compound interest, time and work, time and distance, mensuration, and basic data interpretation. Practice from the quantitative aptitude guide and drill weak chapters on the topic-wise practice sets.

General Science and Reasoning. Motion, force, light, sound, electricity, acids and bases, metals and non-metals, human body systems, diseases and nutrition. Reasoning has series, coding-decoding, analogy, blood relations, direction sense, ranking and simple puzzles. The reasoning complete guide covers all of it.

Salary and career growth

Jail Prahari sits in pay matrix Level 4 of the MP 7th Pay Commission, with a pay band of Rs 19,500 to Rs 62,000 (older grade pay Rs 1,900). Add dearness allowance, house rent allowance based on city class, uniform allowance and a small ration or washing allowance.

In hand, a fresh Jail Prahari takes home roughly Rs 24,000 to Rs 28,000 a month, higher in bigger cities where HRA is better. Free or subsidised jail quarters cut your expenses a lot. Assistant Jail Superintendent starts considerably higher.

Promotion path goes Jail Prahari to Head Prahari (Mukhya Prahari), then Assistant Jail Superintendent, then Jail Superintendent through departmental promotion and exams. It's slow but real, and departmental exam candidates move faster than those who wait for seniority.

Previous year cut off

From the last completed cycle, indicative marks out of 100:

Category Male Female
UR 73.65 60.67
OBC 71.73 58 (approx)
SC 65.74 52 (approx)
ST 56.55 45 (approx)

Read these as a target, not a promise. Normalised scores shift every year. If you're aiming safe, plan for 80+ raw marks.

Books and preparation strategy

Skip the fat books. For MP GK, one standard MP samanya gyan book by a Hindi publisher is enough, read three times. For maths, a basic arithmetic book plus daily practice. For Hindi grammar, any Class 10 vyakaran book. For English, Wren and Martin only if you are weak in grammar, otherwise practice sets are fine. Free material is available in our Reading Room.

A three month plan that works:

  • Month 1: MP GK cover to cover, one chapter a day. Alongside, maths basics up to percentage and ratio.
  • Month 2: Science, reasoning, Hindi and English grammar. Start one full free mock test every week and note your weak topics.
  • Month 3: Revision plus two mocks a week. Redo every question you got wrong. Start running 800 metres three times a week so the PET is not a shock.

If you want a ready-made daily schedule, use our study plan.

Common mistakes and honest advice

Most people spend 70 percent of their time on maths and 10 percent on MP GK. That's backwards. MP GK is 40 marks, and it's memorisation, which is fully in your control.

Second mistake: ignoring the physical test until the result comes out. You'll get about three weeks of notice. That's not enough to build stamina from zero.

Third: not attempting all 100 questions. There's no negative marking. Leaving a question blank is throwing away a free guess.

And be realistic. Lakhs of applicants for 757 posts means the competition is brutal. Prepare for MP Jail Prahari, but keep a parallel line running with SSC GD Constable or RRB Group D, since the syllabus overlaps heavily and you double your chances in the same year.

Final word

MP Jail Prahari is a fair exam. There's no interview, no negative marking, and the syllabus stops at Class 10 level. What separates the selected from the rest is MP GK depth and the ability to sit through 100 questions without panicking.

Start with one MP GK book and one mock test this week. Fix your weak chapters, run twice a week, and keep an eye on the MPESB site for the result. That's the whole game.
