NEW DELHI / CHENNAI, October 6 — The Ministry of Railways on Tuesday formalized a strategic research partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras to develop a sovereign 5G-LTE-enabled train control and signaling system compliant with European Train Control System (ETCS) Level-2 specifications.
The initiative aims to transition India's mainline network away from legacy imported GSM-R radio networks toward an indigenous 'Kavach-5G' communication architecture. Utilizing the dedicated 700 MHz spectrum allocated to Indian Railways, the indigenous platform will deliver ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) required for continuous automatic train protection (ATP), moving block signaling, and real-time cab signaling directly to locomotive drivers.
The 5G Railway Telecommunications Testbed at IIT Madras will spearhead the design, formal validation, and safety certification of the Radio Block Centres (RBCs) and onboard cab equipment. The implementation of high-throughput 5G connectivity along High-Density Corridors is projected to augment sectional line capacity by up to 30 percent, permitting closer headways between high-speed Vande Bharat and freight trains without compromising fail-safe operational margins.
Railway safety electronics, communication-based train control (CBTC), 700 MHz sub-GHz spectrum dynamics, and indigenous R&D partnerships represent vital topics across UPSC Civil Services (GS-III: Technology and Infrastructure) and Railway Recruitment Board (RRB JE/SSE) technical examinations. Candidates should note that the Union Cabinet allocated 5 MHz of premium spectrum in the 700 MHz band to Indian Railways in June 2021 specifically to facilitate the nationwide deployment of indigenous Kavach ATP networks.
