NEW DELHI / KOTA, October 6 — Indian Railways achieved a major operational milestone on Tuesday toward revolutionizing overnight passenger transit as the first 16-coach indigenous Vande Bharat Sleeper trainset successfully executed dynamic oscillation and high-speed emergency braking trials at 160 kmph along the Kota–Nagda testing stretch of the West Central Railway.
Supervised by senior technical directors from the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) and the Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai, comprehensive electronic instrumentation validated the train's superior ride index, aerodynamic stability, structural crashworthiness, and automated cabin sound-proofing. Telemetry gathered during acceleration runs demonstrated minimal lateral sway, with the train registering braking deceleration curves superior to existing Rajdhani Express rakes.
Ministerial officials confirmed that the Vande Bharat Sleeper incorporates indigenous 'KAVACH' Level-4 Automated Train Protection (ATP) electronics, aircraft-style modular interiors fabricated from glass-fibre-reinforced polymers, ergonomic multi-point berth suspension, and fully sealed gangways to eliminate dust infiltration. The first commercial routes are slated for deployment along the Golden Quadrilateral trunks connecting New Delhi with Mumbai and Howrah.
Railway infrastructure modernization, the statutory mandate of RDSO, indigenous rolling stock manufacturing, and the indigenously developed KAVACH automatic collision avoidance system represent recurring examination topics across UPSC Civil Services (GS-III: Infrastructure) and Railway Recruitment Board (RRB NTPC, JE, ALP) examinations. Aspirants should note that the Vande Bharat initiative (initially developed under 'Train 18') commenced operations in February 2019 between New Delhi and Varanasi, with the specialized Sleeper derivative engineered collaboratively by ICF Chennai and defence PSU BEML Limited.
