CHANDIPUR, October 15 — The Indian Air Force (IAF) in partnership with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) on Thursday successfully conducted live-fire air combat trials of the indigenous Astra Mk-1 Beyond Visual Range (BVR) air-to-air missile from a Su-30MKI fighter aircraft off the coast of Odisha at the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur.
The all-weather day-and-night missile demonstrated pinpoint engagement by intercepting and destroying an agile, maneuvering unmanned target drone at a stand-off range exceeding 90 kilometers. The weapon system features an indigenous radio-frequency (RF) seeker developed by the Research Centre Imarat (RCI), coupled with fiber-optic gyro inertial guidance and robust Electronic Counter-Countermeasures (ECCM).
Defence procurement officials underscored that successful operational validation paves the way for accelerated full-rate series production by Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), systematically replacing imported French MICA and Russian R-77 inventories while expanding integration onto the IAF's indigenous LCA Tejas Mk-1A fleet.
The historical trajectory of India's indigenous missile programs under DRDO, the aerodynamic mechanics of Beyond Visual Range (BVR) engagements, the extended capabilities of Astra variants (Mk-1, Mk-2 with dual-pulse motor, Mk-3 with solid-fuel ducted ramjet), and domestic defense manufacturing (BDL, HAL) are central topics in UPSC Civil Services (GS-III: Internal Security & Defence Technology).
