If you want to become a nurse in Madhya Pradesh, this is the exam that decides it. MP GNTST PNST is the state entrance test run by the Madhya Pradesh Employees Selection Board (MPESB, the old Vyapam) for B.Sc. Nursing and GNM nursing admissions in government colleges. One paper, 100 questions, two hours. That's it.
The 2026 cycle has already moved fast. The notification came on 9 June 2026, forms closed on 23 June, and the exam was held from 10 July. The provisional answer key went live on 15 July with an objection window till 17 July. As of end-July 2026, the result is still awaited. If you missed this round, read on anyway, because the pattern barely changes year to year and the next cycle will look almost identical.

Counselling dates are not officially announced yet. Treat them as tentative. Last year the result came on 25 July 2025 and counselling ran through September, so a similar gap is likely. Keep an eye on exam news updates and the board site.

What the job actually is
Two different courses sit under one exam, so be clear which one you're chasing.
PNST gets you into the 4-year B.Sc. Nursing course at government medical college nursing schools. After that you're a Staff Nurse, and with a B.Sc. you're eligible for Nursing Officer posts in central hospitals, AIIMS, ESIC and railways too.
GNTST (also written GNMTST) gets you into the 3-year General Nursing and Midwifery diploma. Shorter, cheaper, and you start earning sooner. But your ceiling is lower and many central recruitments now insist on B.Sc.
Day to day, nursing is not a desk job. Rotating shifts including nights. Wards, OT, ICU, labour room, OPD. Postings in MP can be anywhere, from a district hospital in Bhopal to a rural community health centre. The work is physically hard. Job security is the payoff.
Seats and post breakdown
MPESB conducts the test. It does not allot seats. That happens in counselling.
Roughly 1,040 B.Sc. Nursing seats were offered in the last cycle across government colleges, with the split looking like this:

Colleges include Gandhi Medical College Bhopal, MGM Medical College Indore, NSCB Medical College Jabalpur, Gajra Raja Medical College Gwalior, Bundelkhand Medical College Sagar and Shyam Shah Medical College Rewa. GNM seats are separate and spread across district-level nursing schools. Exact seat matrix comes out with the counselling notice each year.
Eligibility
Nationality: Indian citizen. MP domicile candidates get reservation benefit and the reduced fee. Non-domicile candidates can appear but compete in the open pool.
Education: Class 12 (10+2) with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English. Minimum aggregate in PCB is 45% for General and EWS, 40% for SC, ST and OBC. Appearing candidates can apply, but you must produce the mark sheet at counselling.
Age: Minimum 17 years as on 31 December 2026. There is no fixed upper cap in the notification for the entrance itself; Indian Nursing Council norms apply at admission.

Medical fitness: Mandatory. You'll be checked at admission. There are no running or height standards like in SSC GD Constable, but you must be fit for ward duty.

Steps to apply when the next cycle opens:
- Get a valid MP Online / Kiosk profile or apply directly from home with a debit card, UPI or net banking.
- Go to esb.mp.gov.in, open the GNTST PNST link, register with your name exactly as on the Class 10 mark sheet.
- Upload a recent photo and signature in the specified size. Wrong photo format is the single most common rejection reason.
- Pay the fee, save the receipt, and download the confirmation page.
- Use the correction window if you spot an error. After it closes, nothing can be changed.

Tie-break order: higher Biology marks, then Chemistry, then Physics, then English. If still tied, the older candidate wins. So Biology is worth more than its 20 marks suggest.

Everything is at NCERT Class 11 and 12 level. Don't buy a thick competition book before you finish NCERT.
Physics (20 marks)
Units and measurement, motion, laws of motion, work energy and power, gravitation, thermodynamics, kinetic theory, oscillations and waves, electrostatics, current electricity, magnetic effects of current, electromagnetic induction and AC, ray and wave optics, dual nature of matter, atoms and nuclei, semiconductor basics.
Chemistry (20 marks)
Atomic structure, periodicity, chemical bonding, states of matter, thermodynamics, equilibrium, redox reactions, solutions, electrochemistry, chemical kinetics, p-block and d-block elements, coordination compounds, general organic chemistry, hydrocarbons, alcohols phenols ethers, aldehydes ketones and acids, amines, biomolecules, polymers, chemistry in everyday life.
Biology (20 marks)
This is the paper's backbone. Cell structure and function, biomolecules, cell cycle, plant and animal kingdoms, morphology and anatomy of flowering plants, plant physiology including photosynthesis and respiration, full human physiology (digestion, breathing, circulation, excretion, locomotion, neural and chemical control), reproduction and reproductive health, genetics and evolution, human health and disease, microbes in human welfare, biotechnology, ecology and biodiversity.
General English (20 marks)
Tenses, articles, prepositions, subject-verb agreement, active and passive voice, direct and indirect speech, sentence correction, synonyms and antonyms, one word substitution, idioms and phrases, spotting errors, cloze test, short reading comprehension.
General Knowledge (20 marks)
Indian history, Indian polity and Constitution basics, geography of India and Madhya Pradesh, MP districts, rivers, national parks, tribes, folk dances and schemes, Indian economy basics, general science, sports, awards, books and authors, and current affairs of the last 8 to 10 months. Salary, career growth and pay scale
You don't earn from this exam directly. It's an admission test. The salary comes after the course, when you clear a Staff Nurse or Nursing Officer recruitment.

On top of basic you get DA, HRA, nursing allowance, uniform allowance and night duty allowance. Promotion goes Staff Nurse to Nursing Sister to Assistant Nursing Superintendent to Deputy and then Nursing Superintendent. Teaching is the other route: M.Sc. Nursing and then a Nursing Tutor or Lecturer post.
Honest comparison. If you're weighing this against a clerical route like SSC CHSL or RRB NTPC, nursing pays better long term and has a private-sector fallback that clerical jobs don't. The trade-off is shift work.

MPESB publishes qualifying percentiles, not hard marks. Here's the qualifying bar:

Qualifying and getting a seat are two different things. Based on past counselling trends, the working admission cut-off for a government B.Sc. Nursing seat has sat roughly here:

Best books and preparation strategy
Books that actually work:
- NCERT Physics, Chemistry and Biology, Class 11 and 12. Read the lines, not just the diagrams.
- Trueman's Elementary Biology for extra practice questions.
- Any standard nursing entrance guide (Arihant or similar) for mixed practice sets.
- Lucent GK for the static portion, plus one monthly current affairs magazine.
- Wren and Martin for grammar, or the free Reading Room material.
A three-month plan that fits most students:
Month 1. Finish Class 11 Biology and half of Class 12 Biology. Do Physics and Chemistry chapters that are formula-light: atomic structure, periodic table, biomolecules, laws of motion. Start 20 minutes of English grammar daily.
Month 2. Finish Class 12 Biology, complete Chemistry, and cover the high-yield Physics chapters (electricity, optics, modern physics). Begin MP-specific GK. Start solving topic-wise practice sets after every chapter.
Month 3. Full mocks only. Two per week minimum, then daily in the last ten days. Sit for them in the same time slot as your exam shift. Use the free online test series and analyse every wrong answer instead of chasing the next test. If you need a ready timetable, the study plan page has one you can adapt.
Time split by weight: Biology 40%, Chemistry 20%, Physics 15%, GK 15%, English 10%. Biology gets the most because it also breaks ties.
Common mistakes and honest advice
Skipping GK because it "can be done later." It never gets done. Twenty marks sitting free, and most people score 8 out of 20 there.
Over-preparing Physics numericals. This is not NEET. Questions are direct and conceptual. Solving JEE-level problems is wasted effort.
Ignoring MP-specific GK. Every year there are questions on MP rivers, parks, tribes and government schemes. Nobody outside the state prepares this, which is exactly why you should.
Attempting blindly when negative marking applies. If the rule book for your cycle has the 0.25 penalty, a wild guess on 20 questions can cost you 5 marks. That's the difference between a seat and a waitlist.
Treating the entrance as the finish line. Counselling is where seats are lost. Register on time, fill enough choices, and carry every document in original. Missing a caste certificate or domicile paper on counselling day has ended more admissions than a low score has.
And be realistic. Around 1,000 government B.Sc. seats against tens of thousands of applicants means competition is tight for unreserved candidates. A 55 out of 100 will get you a qualified status and no seat. Aim for 70 plus.

Is MP GNTST PNST online or offline? Computer based, held at MPESB centres across Madhya Pradesh. Papers are bilingual.
Can students from other states apply? Yes, but you pay the full Rs 400 fee, get no category reservation, and compete for open seats only.

Is coaching necessary? No. NCERT plus disciplined mock practice is enough. Most toppers here are self-study candidates.
When will the 2026 result come out? Not announced as of 30 July 2026. Answer key objections closed on 17 July, so the result should follow within a few weeks.
Can I do B.Sc. Nursing after GNM? Yes, through Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing, which is a 2-year course with a separate entrance.

Final word
This is one of the fairest entrance exams in the state. One paper, no interview, no physical test, and a syllabus that is nothing more than your school books. If you studied Biology seriously in Class 12, you're already 40% prepared.
The people who miss out are the ones who left GK and English untouched and then lost a seat by three marks. Don't be that person. Start with NCERT Biology today, add 20 marks worth of GK and English on the side, and back it up with regular mock tests so exam day feels like just another practice session.
