If you're a 12th pass student in Madhya Pradesh who can type fast and wants a government desk job without a degree, MP Vyapam Group 4 is probably the shortest road you have. One paper, 100 questions, two hours. No PET, no running, no interview.
But don't confuse "short" with "easy". Lakhs of people apply for a few hundred clerk seats, and the paper has become sharper every cycle. Below is what the exam actually looks like in 2026, what the job is really like once you join, and how to prepare without wasting a year.
Latest notification and important dates
Quick honesty check first. The MPESB 2026 annual calendar lists a Group 4 Combined Recruitment Test (Assistant Grade-3 and equivalent posts) with the exam shown for September 2026 (tentative) and results around November 2026. Aggregator sites reported an application window in March-April 2026 with a large vacancy figure, but that number is not something you should treat as final. Always open esb.mp.gov.in and read the PDF advertisement yourself before you believe any vacancy count.

What the job actually is
Group 4 is the clerical family of MP state government. The main post is Assistant Grade-3, which is a plain office clerk. You sit in a district office, a collectorate branch, a department directorate or a corporation office. Your day is files, noting-drafting, data entry on department portals, dak register, RTI replies and whatever your section officer pushes to you.
Stenotypist and Stenographer posts also come under this group. Those need shorthand and they sit attached to an officer, taking dictation and handling their correspondence. Data Entry Operator posts show up in some cycles too.
It's a stable job with fixed hours in most departments. Posting is anywhere in MP, and in a small district office the work pressure is genuinely low. Growth is slow. That's the honest trade-off.
Vacancy details
Vacancy is decided by the departments that send indents, so it swings a lot year to year. The 2025 cycle had 966 posts, split roughly as 278 UR, 84 EWS, 150 OBC, 229 SC and 215 ST, with horizontal reservation for women, ex-servicemen, PwD and sports quota on top.
Post types you'll usually see:
- Assistant Grade-3 (the bulk of seats)

- Stenographer
- Data Entry Operator / equivalent clerical posts in some departments
Eligibility
Education: 12th pass (Higher Secondary) from a recognised board. For stenography posts you also need a shorthand certificate. Typing speed requirement is normally 20 words per minute in Hindi or 30 wpm in English on a computer.
CPCT: For Assistant Grade-3 and DEO type posts, MP asks for a valid CPCT score card (Computer Proficiency and Certification Test). Many candidates clear the written paper and then lose the seat because they never sat for CPCT. Get it done early, it's valid for a few years.
Domicile: Reservation benefit and age relaxation in MP posts is for MP domicile candidates. Candidates from outside MP can apply but are usually treated in the unreserved category.

- Register on MPOnline with a valid mobile number and email.
- Fill personal details exactly as printed on your 10th marksheet.
- Enter CPCT and qualification details.
- Upload photo and signature in the given size.
- Pay the fee, then download the confirmation page and keep a printout.
MPESB allows a correction window with a small charge. Use it if your category or date of birth is wrong, because those two errors are the ones that get candidates rejected at document verification.

General Knowledge and Madhya Pradesh GK
Indian history with focus on the freedom struggle, Indian polity and the Constitution, geography of India, basic economics, general science of class 10 level, sports, awards, books and authors. MP portion is the scoring part: districts and divisions, rivers, national parks and sanctuaries, tribes, folk dances and festivals, historical sites, MP government schemes, state symbols, and who holds which post in the state. General Hindi
संधि, समास, उपसर्ग-प्रत्यय, पर्यायवाची, विलोम, अनेक शब्दों के लिए एक शब्द, मुहावरे और लोकोक्तियाँ, वाक्य शुद्धि, वर्तनी, रस-छंद-अलंकार, अपठित गद्यांश. This is the easiest 20 marks in the paper for most MP students. Don't leave it to the last month.
General English
Tenses, articles, prepositions, subject-verb agreement, active-passive, direct-indirect, synonyms and antonyms, one word substitution, idioms, spotting errors, cloze test, short comprehension. Grammar is basic here, roughly class 10 level.
Mathematics
Number system, LCM and HCF, simplification, percentage, ratio and proportion, average, profit and loss, simple and compound interest, time and work, time speed distance, mensuration, basic algebra, and data interpretation from simple tables and graphs. Computer Knowledge and General Aptitude
Computer fundamentals, input and output devices, memory, MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint, operating systems, internet and email, shortcut keys, computer security basics. Salary and career growth
Assistant Grade-3 sits in Pay Level 4 (roughly Rs 19,500 basic). Steno and equivalent posts range up to higher levels, with the overall band across Group 4 posts quoted as Rs 19,500 to Rs 91,300.

Probation is normally three years, during which pay is stipendiary in some departments. Promotion goes Assistant Grade-3 to Assistant Grade-2, then Assistant Grade-1 and Head Clerk / Superintendent. It's seniority driven, so expect years, not months. Many people use the job as a base and keep preparing for MPPSC or higher posts on the side.
Previous year cut-off (indicative)
MPESB does not always publish a clean category-wise cut-off table, and normalisation shifts the numbers. Based on past merit lists, treat this as a rough target, not gospel.

Books and preparation strategy
Nothing exotic needed. Lucent for GK, an MP GK book from any standard Hindi publisher, RS Aggarwal or Kiran for maths, Lucent for Hindi, and a basic computer awareness book. Free versions of most of this sit in our Reading Room.
Months 1 and 2: Finish maths chapters one by one and do the Hindi grammar syllabus fully. Start MP GK with 30 minutes daily.
Month 3: English grammar plus computer awareness. Begin one full mock every week.
Month 4: Revision and mocks. Two full tests a week, and spend more time analysing the paper than giving it. A ready-made study plan helps if you keep drifting.
Since the pattern overlaps heavily with central exams, candidates preparing for SSC CHSL or RRB NTPC can run both with the same base and just add MP GK.
Common mistakes and honest advice
Skipping CPCT is mistake number one. Second, people over-prepare English and under-prepare MP GK, which is exactly backwards for this paper. Third, candidates leave questions blank out of habit even though there's no negative marking. Fill everything.
Also, be realistic. Selection ratio here is harsh. If you're 25 and only chasing Group 4, keep SSC CHSL and MP Police in your basket at the same time.
FAQ
Is a graduation degree needed? No. 12th pass is enough. Steno posts additionally need a shorthand certificate.
Is CPCT compulsory? For Assistant Grade-3 and data entry type posts, yes, a valid CPCT score card is asked. Check the advertisement for your specific post.
Is there negative marking? No. Attempt every question.
Is there an interview? No. Written test, then skill test where applicable, then document verification.
Can candidates from other states apply? Yes, but without MP reservation or age relaxation. You'll be counted as unreserved.

Is Group 4 easier than MP Patwari? The syllabus is similar in spirit, but Patwari has more sections and a heavier paper. Group 4 is lighter, so the cut-off runs higher.
