Want to teach classes 6 to 8 in a Madhya Pradesh government school? This is your exam. People call it MP Vyapam Middle School Teacher, MSTET, or just Varg 2. All the same thing. The board running it is MPESB, the body once called Vyapam.
One thing confuses almost every fresher, so let's clear it now. There are two separate exams. First the eligibility test (MSTET), which only gives a certificate. Then the recruitment test, which gives the job. You can't skip the first. Here's everything you need, honest bits included.
Latest notification and important dates
As of 30 July 2026, MPESB has not released the detailed MSTET 2026 notification. The board's 2026 exam calendar (published December 2025) lists the Middle School Teacher Eligibility Test in July 2026 and the Primary test in August 2026. Both tentative. The Directorate of Public Instruction did publish an updated Varg 2 syllabus on the Vimarsh portal in July 2026, which usually means the notification is close.

What the job actually is
You teach classes 6 to 8 in a school run by the School Education Department or the Tribal Affairs Department. One subject is your main load: Hindi, English, Sanskrit, Urdu, Maths, Science or Social Science. Separate posts exist for sports and music teachers.
Day to day it's teaching periods, correcting notebooks, filling attendance and MDM records, and running unit tests. Add the extra government work every MP teacher knows about: BLO duty, survey work, exam duty, portal entries on Vimarsh and Education Portal 3.0. Postings are anywhere in the state, and a first posting in a rural block is normal. If you want a city posting on day one, this job will disappoint you. If you want a stable job with good holidays and real respect in a small town, it's solid.

MP runs big teacher drives every two to three years. Clear MSTET now and you're ready the day the next ad drops.
Eligibility
Education. A Bachelor's degree with at least 50% marks plus B.Ed, or a degree with D.El.Ed, or an equivalent NCTE-approved teaching qualification. Your graduation subject must match the subject you apply for. Final year B.Ed or D.El.Ed students are usually allowed.
Age. For the eligibility test the minimum is 18 or 21 depending on the notification. Recruitment last used 21 to 40 years.

Domicile. Anyone can sit for the eligibility test, but fee concession, age relaxation and reservation are for MP domicile candidates only. Others are treated as unreserved. No physical standards apply to teaching posts.

Steps: register on esb.mp.gov.in, verify your MP Online profile, fill personal and academic details, upload photo and signature in the given size, pick subject and exam city, pay, then save the PDF. Two mistakes cost people their form every year: choosing the wrong subject group, and uploading a photo older than three months without a date stamp.
Exam pattern
One paper, computer based, objective, with no negative marking. This is a big relief compared to SSC papers.

Duration is 2 hours 30 minutes. Qualifying marks are normally 60% for General and 50% for reserved categories. The certificate is valid for life under the current NCTE rule.

Detailed syllabus
Part A (30 marks)
Hindi: apathit gadyansh, sandhi, samas, upsarg and pratyay, paryayvachi and vilom, muhavare, vakya shuddhi, ras, alankar, chhand.
English: comprehension, articles, prepositions, tenses, voice, narration, synonyms and antonyms, one word substitution, spotting errors.
General knowledge and current affairs: polity basics, national and MP events of the last 8 to 10 months, sports, awards, schemes, and MP GK like districts, rivers, tribes, national parks and folk dance. Follow daily current affairs and use the General Awareness guide for static topics.
Child development and pedagogy: growth and development, learning theories of Piaget, Vygotsky and Kohlberg, individual differences, inclusive education, children with special needs, motivation, evaluation and CCE, NEP 2020 and RTE basics.
Part B (120 marks, your subject)
Mathematics: number system, HCF and LCM, fractions, ratio, percentage, profit and loss, interest, time and work, speed distance, algebra, geometry, mensuration, statistics, maths pedagogy. The Quantitative Aptitude guide covers the arithmetic block.
Science: food and nutrition, acids bases and salts, metals and non metals, cell structure, human body systems, plant life, reproduction, light, sound, heat, electricity, magnetism, force and motion, natural resources, pollution, science pedagogy.
Social Science: ancient, medieval and modern Indian history, freedom struggle, physical and Indian geography, MP geography, the Constitution, Parliament and judiciary, local self government, basic economics, and social science pedagogy.
Hindi (Varg 2): vyakaran in depth, Hindi sahitya ka itihaas, kavi and rachnayein, ras alankar chhand, Hindi bhasha shikshan shastra.
English (Varg 2): grammar in depth, literature basics, figures of speech, phonetics, methods of teaching English.
Sanskrit and Urdu follow the same pattern: language, grammar, literature and pedagogy.
Since there's no negative marking, plan to attempt all 150. The topic-wise practice sets are the fastest way to find weak chapters.
Salary and career growth
Middle school subject teachers get a basic pay of Rs 32,800. Sports, music and primary posts start at Rs 25,300.

Confirmation comes after probation, often on a lower stipend in the first years, so read your appointment letter carefully. Growth goes Middle School Teacher to High School to Higher Secondary Teacher, then Principal, then BRC and BEO roles. Many teachers also clear MPPSC while in service. Holidays and job security are the real perks.
Previous year cut-off
MSTET is a qualifying exam, so the cut-off is just the pass mark.

Recruitment is different. There the merit cut-off has gone well above 100 out of 150 in crowded subjects like Social Science and Hindi. Don't aim to just pass. Aim for 120+, since that preparation carries straight into recruitment.
Books and preparation strategy
Pick one standard book and stop hoarding. Arihant, Punekar and YCT all publish MP Madhyamik Shikshak Patrata Pariksha 2026 books subject-wise in Hindi and English medium. Add NCERT class 6 to 10, plus a basic CDP book. Free material sits in our Reading Room, and the Reasoning guide helps if reasoning appears in your paper.
Months 1 and 2: finish NCERT for your subject end to end. Make short notes. Do 30 minutes of CDP daily.
Month 3: subject book in full plus MP GK. One sectional test every two days.
Month 4: at least ten previous year papers, then two full mocks a week. Revise only from your own notes. A ready study plan helps if you tend to drift.
Common mistakes and honest advice
Ignoring Part A because it's only 30 marks is a classic error. Those marks are easy and they decide ranks at the recruitment stage. Second, people study their subject at graduation depth. The paper sits at class 8 to 10 level with pedagogy on top, so going deeper wastes weeks. Third, pedagogy gets treated as memorisation. Learn the theories with examples and the questions become obvious.
Be realistic too. Lakhs of B.Ed holders in MP chase the same posts. The eligibility test is passable with honest three-month work. Recruitment merit is where it turns brutal, especially in Social Science and Hindi.
FAQ
Is MSTET the same as the teacher recruitment exam? No. MSTET gives you an eligibility certificate. Recruitment is a separate exam held later for actual posts.
How long is the MSTET certificate valid? For life, under the current NCTE rule.
Can non-MP candidates apply? Yes, but you pay the higher fee and get no reservation or age relaxation.
Is there negative marking? No. Attempt every question.
Can I appear without B.Ed? Only if you hold D.El.Ed or another NCTE-approved teaching qualification. Final year students are usually allowed.
Which subject has the least competition? Sanskrit and Urdu usually have fewer applicants. Social Science and Hindi are the toughest.
How many attempts do I get? No limit, as long as you meet the age criteria.
Is the paper in Hindi or English? Bilingual, except for the language papers themselves.
How much time do I need? Three to four honest months if your graduation subject matches.
When will the 2026 vacancy come? Not announced. MPESB usually holds recruitment within a year or two of the eligibility test.
