If you did B.E. or B.Tech in Madhya Pradesh and you want a state government engineering job, MPPSC AE is the top of that ladder. It's a Class 2 gazetted post. You get a government quarter in most postings, a site vehicle, and real authority over public works worth crores. Very few state engineering jobs give you that in your twenties.
But here's the honest part first. The seat count is tiny. The 2025 cycle had just 32 posts for the whole state, and roughly 30,000 to 40,000 engineers chase them every time. So the exam isn't hard because the paper is tough. It's hard because a single silly mistake pushes you 400 ranks down. Let's go through what the exam actually looks like right now, in July 2026.
Latest notification and important dates
The current cycle is the MPPSC State Engineering Service Examination 2025, whose notification came out on 30 December 2025. The written exam is already done and the result is out. A fresh 2026 notification has not been released yet as of 30 July 2026. MPPSC usually drops the engineering service advertisement between November and January, so watch the site from around Diwali.

What the job actually is
An MPPSC Assistant Engineer is the field-level officer who plans, executes and certifies government construction. Most of the posts sit in the Water Resources Department (WRD), so a large chunk of the work is canals, dams, barrages, lift irrigation schemes and their maintenance. The rest go to Public Health Engineering (PHE) for water supply and sanitation schemes, and a small number to the Agriculture department.
Day to day, you're not sitting in an office all day. You do site inspections, measurement book entries, quality checks on concrete and earthwork, running bills for contractors, tender documentation and progress reports to the Executive Engineer. Rural or semi-urban postings are the norm early on. Some people love it because the work is visible and real. Some hate the transfers. Know yourself before you commit two years to this exam.

The 2025 cycle advertised 32 posts. The split gives you a clear hint about which branch has the best odds.

Civil dominates, as it always does. Electrical and mechanical candidates compete for a shared pool of 7 seats, which is brutal. Agriculture engineering had one single post, and one post means the cut off is basically a lottery for the top scorer.
Eligibility
Education: B.E. or B.Tech in the relevant branch from a recognised university, or AMIE (Institution of Engineers, Kolkata). Working knowledge of Hindi in Devanagari script is required. Final-year students can apply provisionally but must produce the degree before appointment.
Age: 21 to 40 years as on 1 January of the exam year.

Domicile: Non-MP candidates can apply, but they get no age relaxation, no fee concession and no reservation benefit. They are treated as unreserved.
Physical standards: There is no PET or PST. Only a standard medical fitness check at the appointment stage.

Steps to apply:
- Go to mppsc.mp.gov.in and open the online application link, which redirects to MPOnline.
- Register with a working mobile number and email. Use one you'll keep for two years.
- Fill personal, domicile and category details exactly as they appear on your certificates.
- Choose your branch and your post preference order carefully. You cannot change it later without the correction fee.
- Upload your photo and signature in the given size.
- Pay online and save the PDF plus the transaction receipt.
Exam pattern
Selection is a written exam followed by an interview. There's no prelims.

Each question carries 3 marks. There is negative marking of 1 mark for a wrong answer. That 1:3 ratio tempts people to guess wildly. Don't. At this cut off level, 20 blind guesses can cost you the job.
The paper is bilingual, Hindi and English. It is OMR based.

Part A: General Studies (50 questions)
This part is almost entirely Madhya Pradesh. Engineers routinely ignore it and then lose by 10 marks.

Part B: Civil Engineering (100 questions)
Building materials and construction, strength of materials, structural analysis, RCC and prestressed concrete design, steel structures, soil mechanics and foundation engineering, fluid mechanics and hydraulics, hydrology and water resources, irrigation engineering, environmental engineering (water supply, wastewater, solid waste, air and noise pollution), transportation engineering (highways, railways, airports, traffic), surveying, estimation and costing, construction planning and CPM/PERT.
Part B: Mechanical Engineering
Engineering mechanics, strength of materials, theory of machines, machine design, thermodynamics, IC engines, power plant engineering, refrigeration and air conditioning, heat and mass transfer, fluid mechanics and fluid machinery, manufacturing and production engineering, industrial engineering and operations research, material science, CAD/CAM.
Part B: Electrical Engineering
Circuit theory, electromagnetic field theory, electrical machines, power systems (generation, transmission, distribution, protection), switchgear, control systems, electrical and electronic measurements, analog and digital electronics, power electronics and drives, microprocessors, utilisation of electrical energy.
Part B: Agricultural Engineering
Surveying and levelling, soil and water conservation, irrigation and drainage engineering, farm machinery and power, farm structures, agricultural process engineering, post-harvest technology, renewable energy in agriculture.
Salary, allowances and career growth
The post carries pay scale ₹15,600 to ₹39,100 with Grade Pay ₹5,400, which maps to Level 12, ₹56,100 to ₹1,77,500 in the revised MP pay matrix. Entry basic is ₹56,100.

Many field postings come with government accommodation instead of HRA, plus a departmental vehicle for site work.
Promotion ladder: Assistant Engineer to Executive Engineer, then Superintending Engineer, then Chief Engineer, then Engineer-in-Chief. The first promotion usually takes 7 to 10 years depending on your department's vacancy position. WRD moves reasonably. PHE is slower.

MPPSC does not publish cut offs promptly, and the older ones are the reliable reference. Marks below are out of the written total for that cycle.

Read this the right way. Electrical and mechanical cut offs sit far higher than civil because the seats are fewer, not because the paper is harder. For the 2025 cycle, an unreserved civil aspirant should target 300+ out of 450 to feel safe. There are no sectional cut offs.
Books and preparation strategy
For the engineering part, your college textbooks plus a standard objective book are enough. Made Easy or IES Master handbook and practice sets for your branch, plus solved GATE and state AE question banks. Do not buy five books for one subject. One good book, revised three times, beats five books read once.

A workable six-month plan if the next notification lands in December:
- Months 1 and 2: Cover half your core engineering subjects. Two subjects at a time, notes as you go. Start 30 minutes of MP GK daily.
- Months 3 and 4: Finish the remaining engineering subjects. Begin subject-wise objective practice. Add current affairs revision every Sunday.
- Month 5: Full-length mocks, one every four days. Analyse each one for two hours. Revise MP static GK fully.
- Month 6: Only revision and mocks. No new topic. Fix your attempt strategy and cut down guessing.

Common mistakes and honest advice
The biggest one: treating Part A as optional. Fifty questions, 150 marks, one third of the paper. Candidates who score 40 in GS and 220 in engineering lose to those who score 90 in GS and 200 in engineering. GS is easier to improve and far more predictable.
Second, over-attempting. With negative marking at 1 mark, attempting 145 out of 150 when you're sure of 105 is self-sabotage. Practise a cut-off point where you stop.
Third, ignoring the interview. It's only 50 marks, but in a 32-post exam those 50 marks reorder the whole list. Know your final year project, your branch basics and MP's major irrigation schemes.

FAQ
Is there a prelims exam for MPPSC AE? No. One written paper of 450 marks, then an interview of 50 marks.
Has the 2026 notification come out? No. As of 30 July 2026 only the 2025 cycle is running, and its result came on 1 June 2026. The next advertisement is expected around late 2026.
Can candidates from other states apply? Yes, but you'll be treated as unreserved with no fee concession and no age relaxation.
Is Hindi compulsory? You need working knowledge of Hindi in Devanagari script. The question paper is bilingual, so you can answer in whichever medium you're comfortable with.
How many attempts are allowed? There is no attempt limit. Only the age limit applies.
Is there negative marking? Yes. 1 mark deducted per wrong answer, with 3 marks per correct answer.
Which branch has the best chance? Civil, by a distance. It had 24 of the 32 posts in the last cycle. Electrical and mechanical share a much smaller pool.
What is the in-hand salary? Roughly ₹78,000 to ₹86,000 per month at entry, on Level 12 of the MP pay matrix.
Do I need coaching? Not really, if you were a serious engineering student. Your weak spot will be MP General Studies, and that is self-study material plus regular mock tests.
How long does the full process take? Notification to final appointment has been running around 12 to 15 months in recent cycles.

MPPSC AE is worth the effort if you're a civil engineer in MP. The pay is solid, the post is gazetted, and the work is the kind that actually shows on the ground. For electrical and mechanical candidates, be realistic. Seven seats means you need a near-perfect paper, so run this exam alongside others rather than betting everything on it.
