NEW DELHI, October 9 — The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, on Friday notified mandatory Front-of-Pack Nutrition Labeling (FOPNL) and threshold-based warning standards across all packaged food and beverage products retailed nationwide.
Under the gazetted Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and Labelling) Amendment Regulations, food business operators (FBOs) are legally mandated to display explicit declarations of added sugar, saturated fats, trans fats, and sodium on the primary display panel in high-contrast typographic formats. Products exceeding prescribed thresholds of High Fat, Sugar, and Salt (HFSS) must affix prominent statutory warning identifiers to inform consumer choices.
The food safety regulator announced a structured 12-month compliance transition window for large packaged food corporations and 18 months for MSME manufacturers. The mandate extends concurrently to quick-commerce and e-commerce platforms, requiring digital nutrition summary disclosures prior to order placement to mitigate rising incidence rates of lifestyle non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like hypertension and diabetes.
Statutory enforcement mechanisms under the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006, the comparative mechanics of international FOPNL frameworks (Traffic Light labeling, Nutri-Score, and Warning Seals), WHO guidelines under the REPLACE action package targeting trans fat elimination (under 2% ceiling), and NCD prevention policies are pivotal domains across UPSC Civil Services (GS-II: Public Health & Nutrition; GS-III: Food Processing).
