NEW DELHI, October 10 — The Ministry of Railways on Saturday sanctioned a focused capital manufacturing outlay of ₹3,800 crore to construct and induct 1,000 next-generation high-axle freight wagons—comprising stainless steel BOBRN coal hoppers and BCNHL covered wagons—advancing its strategic 'Mission 3000 MT' objective to double annual railway freight throughput to 3,000 million tonnes by 2030.
Under procurement guidelines issued by the Railway Board, the rolling stock manufacturing contracts will be executed across accredited domestic engineering enterprises—including Titagarh Rail Systems, Texmaco Rail, and BEML—under Make in India parameters. The upgraded wagons integrate lightweight ferritic stainless steel bodies, high-capacity bogie draft gears, and automated rapid-discharge bottom doors engineered to compress bulk rake turnaround latencies by 35 percent.
Railway authorities highlighted that the rolling stock is certified for regular 100 km/h cruising speeds along the operational stretches of the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC) and Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC). Accelerating heavy freight transit by rail directly eases highway vehicular congestion and reduces freight-associated carbon dioxide emissions across national industrial corridors.
Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL incorporated under the Companies Act in 2006), modal shift economics under the National Logistics Policy (NLP 2022 targeting rail share increase from 27% to 45%), freight rake turnaround indices, and Indian Railways capital capex deployments are standard topics across UPSC Civil Services (GS-III: Infrastructure & Logistics) and public engineering examinations.
