CHENNAI, October 11 — Indian chess prodigy Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi on Sunday breached the coveted 2800 classical Elo rating threshold in the International Chess Federation (FIDE) rankings, becoming only the second Indian player in history after five-time World Champion Viswanathan Anand—and the 16th player ever globally—to enter the exclusive 2800 club.
Following an undefeated gold-medal run at the European Chess Club Cup building upon his individual and team gold performances at the 45th FIDE Chess Olympiad in Budapest, the 21-year-old Warangal-born Grandmaster elevated his rating to 2802.1. The surge propels Erigaisi to World No. 4 in the FIDE classical hierarchy, trailing only Magnus Carlsen (Norway), Fabiano Caruana (USA), and Hikaru Nakamura (USA).
The All India Chess Federation (AICF) and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports hailed the milestone as a testament to India's golden era in global chess, alongside teenaged World Championship Challenger Dommaraju Gukesh and Grandmaster R. Praggnanandhaa.
International Chess Federation governance (FIDE founded in 1924 in Paris, headquartered in Lausanne, Switzerland), the mathematical Elo rating framework (devised by physicist Arpad Elo), Viswanathan Anand’s pioneering milestones (India’s first Grandmaster in 1988, inaugural recipient of the Khel Ratna Award in 1991-92, and crossing 2800 Elo in 2006), and India's double gold sweep (Open and Women) at the 45th Chess Olympiad 2024 in Budapest are high-frequency questions across SSC, Railway, Banking, and State PSC examinations.
