If you have passed class 10 and you live in a village or small town in Madhya Pradesh, MP GDS is probably the easiest central government job you will ever get a shot at. No written exam. No interview. Your class 10 marksheet decides everything.
That sounds great until you see the cut off. In the 2026 cycle, unreserved candidates in the MP circle needed a full 100 percent in class 10 to make the first merit list. Yes, 100. So the job is easy to apply for and brutally hard to actually get. Let's go through the whole thing honestly, so you know where you stand.
Latest notification and important dates
India Post ran the 2026 GDS cycle early in the year and it is now in the merit list and joining stage. There is no fresh notification open as of July 2026. The next cycle usually lands between December and February, so keep an eye out from December 2026.

What the job actually is
GDS is not a normal government clerk job sitting in a district office. You work at a Branch Post Office, usually in a village, often the only post office for several kilometres around.
There are three roles under the GDS umbrella. A Branch Postmaster (BPM) runs the branch office. You open and close it, handle cash, run the post office savings accounts, do IPPB banking work, and answer to the sub-divisional office. An Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM) supports the BPM, sells stamps, books parcels and delivers mail when needed. Dak Sevak posts sit at bigger offices and handle sorting, counter work and delivery.
Working hours are 4 to 5 hours a day on paper. In practice, in a busy branch, you will do more. The BPM also has to provide the office premises in many cases, which is something people forget until they get the offer letter. If you already live in the village, that's fine. If you don't, it becomes a real cost.
The good part: it's central government, the pay is decent for the hours, and after some years you become eligible for departmental exams into Postal Assistant and MTS posts. Many people use GDS as a stable base while preparing for SSC CHSL or RRB NTPC.

The Madhya Pradesh circle got 2,120 posts in the 2026 cycle out of roughly 28,700 nationally. The category split from the last published breakdown looks like this.

MP usually sits in the top five circles by vacancy count because of the number of rural branch offices. Districts like Rewa, Satna, Chhindwara, Sagar and Balaghat tend to get large shares.

Education: Class 10 pass from a recognised board, with Mathematics and English as compulsory or elective subjects. Both must appear on the marksheet. This trips up a lot of candidates from older boards, so check your marksheet before you apply.
Local language: You must have studied Hindi up to class 10 for the MP circle.
Other requirements: Basic computer knowledge (a 60-day certificate from a recognised institute, though class 10 or 12 with computer as a subject counts), cycling knowledge, and a source of livelihood other than the GDS pay. That last condition is on paper and is declared at joining.
There is no physical test and no medical standard beyond basic fitness. No domicile restriction either, but the language condition effectively means MP candidates dominate the MP circle merit list.

How to apply:
- Go to indiapostgdsonline.gov.in and complete registration. You get a unique registration number.
- Upload your photo and signature in the exact format asked.
- Pay the fee online if it applies to you.
- Fill the application. Enter your class 10 marks exactly as printed, including the number of subjects and total.
- Choose your divisions and posts in preference order. This step matters more than people realise. Filling only your home division cuts your chances a lot.
- Submit and save the PDF.
The marks entry is where most rejections come from. A wrong total, a wrong board name, or grade points entered as marks and your candidature is gone at verification.
Selection process and how merit is calculated
There is no exam. Read that again if you've been searching for the "MP GDS exam pattern".

Marks are converted to a percentage of the aggregate of all subjects, taken to four decimal places. If two candidates tie, the tie-breaker order is date of birth (older first), then ST, SC, OBC, EWS, then female over male, then transgender.
Grade point candidates get their points multiplied by 9.5 to arrive at a percentage. A CGPA of 10 gives you 95, which is why straight-marks board students often edge ahead in the merit list.

Look at that jump. The 2026 cut offs climbed hard because more CBSE and state board toppers applied. Later merit lists always fall lower than the first, because selected candidates decline or fail verification. The 3rd and 4th lists in MP typically drop 3 to 8 percentage points below the first. So if you have 90 percent, applying is still worth it. You just won't be in the first list.
Salary and career growth
GDS staff get a Time Related Continuity Allowance (TRCA), not a regular pay scale.

On top of that you get dearness allowance at the central rate, which currently adds a big chunk. A fresh BPM in MP takes home roughly Rs 17,000 to Rs 19,000 a month, and an ABPM around Rs 14,000 to Rs 16,000, depending on the DA rate at the time. There is also a combined duty allowance, cash conveyance allowance and office maintenance allowance for BPMs.
Benefits include a Service Discharge Benefit Scheme (like a provident fund), gratuity after 10 years, ex gratia, and paid leave. It is not a pensionable post in the old sense, so be clear about that.
Growth comes through the departmental route. After the required service, you can sit for the Postman/Mail Guard and MTS departmental exams, and later Postal Assistant. Around 25 percent of Postman vacancies are reserved for GDS staff. Plenty of Postal Assistants in MP started as village BPMs.
Preparation strategy
Here's the honest version: there is nothing to prepare for MP GDS itself. Your class 10 marksheet is already printed. What you can prepare is everything around it.
If you are still in school or can improve marks: appear as a private candidate to improve your class 10 result if your board allows it. Even a 4 point jump changes which merit list you land in.
If your marks are fixed and below 90: apply anyway, but do not sit around waiting. Start a parallel plan for exams that actually test you. MP Police Constable, SSC GD Constable and RRB Group D are all open to 10th pass candidates and take skill, not luck.
A workable three-month plan while you wait for the next GDS cycle:
- Month 1: Basics of maths. Percentage, ratio, average, simple interest. Use the Quantitative Aptitude guide and do one topic a day on topic-wise practice.

Common mistakes
Waiting for the "GDS exam date". There isn't one. People lose whole months searching for it.
Filling only one division. Fill as many divisions and posts as you're genuinely willing to join. Merit lists are division-wise, and a slightly lower-demand division can select you at a lower percentage.
Entering marks carelessly. Enter the aggregate of all subjects, not best of five, unless your board prints it that way. Match the marksheet exactly.
Missing the compulsory subject condition. No Maths or no English on the class 10 marksheet means rejection at verification, no matter your percentage.
Giving up after the first list. Four merit lists come out over four months. Many candidates stop checking after March and miss their name in June.
Not keeping documents ready. Caste certificate, EWS certificate, computer certificate and marksheet all need to be verified within a short window. Get them made before the notification, not after.
