If you did a B.Sc. Agriculture in Madhya Pradesh, this is probably the exam you have been waiting for. MPESB has released 2,784 posts under the Agriculture department, and the exam starts on 2 August 2026. That is a big number by MP standards. Most people call this post AAO or Assistant Agriculture Officer, but on the official rule book it is written as Krishi Vistar Adhikari (Agriculture Extension Officer) under Group-2 Sub Group-1. Same exam, same post, different names floating around on the internet.
Here is the honest part first. The application window has already closed (17 July 2026). If you applied, you have roughly a few days left to prepare. If you missed it, read this anyway, because the pattern barely changes between cycles and the next one will look almost identical.

The exam runs in two shifts. Shift 1 is 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM with reporting between 7:00 and 8:00 AM. Shift 2 is 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM with reporting between 12:30 and 1:30 PM. MPESB is strict about reporting time. Reach late and you are simply not allowed in.
What the job actually is
An Agriculture Extension Officer is the government's contact point with farmers at the block and village level. You work under the Directorate of Farmer Welfare and Agriculture Development. Your day is not desk work.
You survey crops, record sowing and yield data, run demonstration plots, distribute seed and fertiliser under schemes, spot pest outbreaks early, and push farmers towards soil health cards, PM-KISAN, PMFBY and e-NAM. During kharif and rabi you will be in the field almost every day.
Posting is anywhere in MP, usually a rural block. If you are from a farming family and you like the work, this job is satisfying. If you want an air-conditioned office in Bhopal, this is not that job.

Eligibility
Education: Bachelor's degree in Agriculture or Horticulture from a recognised university. The degree must be completed before you submit the form. A B.Sc. in general science does not count. Neither does a diploma.
Domicile: Non-MP candidates can apply, but reservation and the lower fee are only for MP domicile candidates.

Physical standards: None. There is no PET or PST. Only a medical fitness check at the end.

Steps, for the next cycle:
- Register on esb.mp.gov.in and get your profile number.
- Fill the online form with degree details and category certificate numbers.
- Upload photo, signature and thumb impression in the given size.
- Pay through the MP Online kiosk or net banking / UPI.
- Download the confirmation page. Do not lose it.
Your MP Rojgar Panjiyan (employment registration) should be active. Many candidates get rejected at document verification for this one small thing.

Duration is 3 hours. Negative marking is 0.25 marks per wrong answer, so blind guessing hurts. Paper is bilingual (Hindi and English). Qualifying marks are 50% for unreserved and 40% for SC/ST/OBC/EWS/PwD. If the exam runs across multiple shifts, MPESB applies normalisation.

Detailed syllabus
Part A (100 marks)
General Knowledge and MP GK: Indian history and freedom movement, geography of India and MP, Indian polity and constitution, economy basics, MP districts, rivers, national parks, tribes, folk dance, festivals, government schemes of MP, sports and awards, current affairs of the last 10-12 months. MP-specific questions are heavy here. Keep up with daily current affairs.
Hindi: संधि, समास, उपसर्ग-प्रत्यय, पर्यायवाची, विलोम, मुहावरे और लोकोक्तियाँ, वाक्य शुद्धि, अपठित गद्यांश.
English: Tenses, articles, prepositions, active-passive voice, narration, synonyms, antonyms, one-word substitution, error spotting, comprehension.
Mathematics: Number system, simplification, percentage, ratio, average, profit and loss, simple and compound interest, time and work, time speed distance, mensuration, data interpretation. The Quantitative Aptitude complete guide covers all of this at the level this paper asks.
Reasoning: Series, coding-decoding, blood relations, direction sense, syllogism, ranking, analogy, classification, non-verbal figures. Work through the Reasoning complete guide chapter by chapter.
General Science: Class 10 level physics, chemistry and biology. Human body, nutrition, diseases, everyday chemistry, basic units.
Computer: Parts of a computer, input-output devices, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, internet and email, shortcut keys, basic terms.
Part B: Agriculture (100 marks)
- General Agriculture: Role of agriculture in the Indian economy, Green Revolution, agricultural statistics of India and MP.
- Agronomy: Major kharif and rabi crops, soybean and wheat and gram in MP, cropping systems, tillage, sowing methods, weed management, irrigation methods, agro-climatic zones of MP.
- Soil Science: Soil formation, physical and chemical properties, soil pH, macro and micro nutrients, fertilisers and manures, saline and alkaline soil reclamation, soil health card.
- Soil and Water Conservation: Types of erosion, contour bunding, watershed management, rainwater harvesting, dryland farming.
- Plant Physiology: Photosynthesis, respiration, transpiration, plant growth regulators, seed dormancy and germination.
- Crop Improvement and Seed Technology: Mendel's laws, selection and hybridisation, heterosis, mutation breeding, biotechnology basics, seed production and certification classes.
- Horticulture: Fruit and vegetable crops, nursery management, propagation methods, floriculture, post-harvest handling, food processing.
- Plant Protection: Insect pests and diseases of major crops, IPM and IDM, pesticide classification and safe use, biological control.
- Agricultural Economics and Marketing: Farm planning and budgeting, MSP, agricultural credit, cooperatives, mandi system, e-NAM.
- Agricultural Extension: Extension teaching methods, ATMA, KVK, T&V system, rural development programmes, PM-KISAN, PMFBY, SMAM.
Part B is where the exam is won. A general-studies-strong candidate with weak agriculture will not make the merit list.
Salary and career growth
Pay scale is Rs 25,300 to Rs 80,500 (MP Class III, Level 8).

There is a catch. During the three-year probation you get a stipend, not full pay: 70% of basic in year one, 80% in year two, 90% in year three. So the first year in hand is closer to Rs 24,000 to 27,000. Plan your finances around that.
Promotion path: Agriculture Extension Officer to Senior Agriculture Development Officer (SADO) to Assistant Director of Agriculture, and further to Deputy Director in a long career. Departmental exams and seniority both count.

Yes, 160+ out of 200. That is 80%. Competition here is brutal because every agriculture graduate in MP writes it.
Books and preparation strategy
Agriculture: Agriculture at a Glance by R.K. Sharma and S.K. Bhoi is the standard. Add Objective Agriculture by S.R. Kantwa for MCQ practice. For MP-specific crops and schemes, use the state agriculture department website and MP Krishi bulletins.
MP GK: Any standard MP Samanya Gyan book (Lucent or McGraw Hill MP edition) is enough. Do not buy three of them.
Maths and Reasoning: R.S. Aggarwal is still fine. Or use the free material in our Reading Room and skip the purchase.
Hindi: Lucent Samanya Hindi.
A simple three-month plan that works:
- Month 1: Finish agriculture theory subject by subject. Two hours a day on Part A, mostly maths and reasoning basics.
- Month 2: MP GK and current affairs daily. Revise agriculture through MCQs only. Start one sectional test every alternate day on topic-wise practice.
- Month 3: Full mocks twice a week, analysis for two hours after each, then revision of weak topics. Nothing new.

Common mistakes
Candidates spend 70% of their time on GK and reasoning because it feels productive, then score 55 out of 100 in agriculture. Flip that ratio. Part B carries half the paper and you already have the degree.
Second mistake: ignoring negative marking. At 0.25 per wrong answer, 40 wild guesses cost you 10 marks. With cut-offs at 160, that is fatal.
Third: not reading the MP-specific content. Agro-climatic zones of MP, major crops district-wise, state schemes. These questions appear every year and most candidates skip them.
Fourth: skipping the confirmation page and Rojgar Panjiyan check. Purely avoidable rejections.
FAQ
Is MP Vyapam AAO and Krishi Vistar Adhikari the same exam? Yes. The official post name is Krishi Vistar Adhikari / Agriculture Extension Officer under Group-2 Sub Group-1. AAO and RAEO are informal names.
Can a B.Sc. Horticulture graduate apply? Yes. Agriculture or Horticulture degree, both are accepted.
Is there an interview? No. Only the CBT, document verification and a medical check.
Can candidates from other states apply? Yes, but you pay the higher fee and are treated as unreserved with a 40-year age cap.
How many attempts are allowed? No attempt limit. Only the age limit applies.
Is the paper in Hindi? It is bilingual. Every question appears in both Hindi and English.
What is the minimum qualifying mark? 50% for unreserved, 40% for SC/ST/OBC/EWS/PwD. But qualifying is not selecting. You need to be near the cut-off.
Is normalisation applied? Yes, when the exam runs across multiple shifts.
What is the actual first-year salary? Around Rs 24,000 to 27,000 in hand because of the probation stipend rule. Full pay comes after three years.
