If you have a diploma in Civil, Electrical or Mechanical engineering and you live in Madhya Pradesh, the Sub Engineer post is probably the single best government job you can realistically target. One paper. No interview. A permanent state government job with a site posting in your own district if luck is on your side.
The catch is that this recruitment does not come every year. MPESB skipped long gaps before, and the last big cycle was in 2024 for 283 posts. The 2026 calendar puts a much bigger number on the table. Here is everything that is confirmed, everything that is still tentative, and what you should actually be studying right now.
Latest notification and important dates
The Madhya Pradesh Employee Selection Board (MPESB, the body most people still call MP Vyapam) released its annual exam calendar on 5 January 2026. Group-03 Recruitment Test, which carries the Sub Engineer posts, is listed there with roughly 900 vacancies.
Be clear about one thing: as of the end of July 2026, the detailed advertisement (the actual PDF with post-wise vacancy, department names and reservation) had not been published on esb.mp.gov.in. Everything below marked "tentative" comes from the calendar, not from a notification. Do not plan your leave or your fee payment around it.

What the job actually is
A Sub Engineer, also written as Upyantri or Junior Engineer, is the person on the ground. Departments that hire through this exam include PWD, Water Resources, Public Health Engineering, Rural Engineering Services, Urban Administration, MP Housing Board and municipal bodies.
Day to day, you take measurements, record them in the measurement book, check whether the contractor used the right grade of concrete, prepare estimates and pass bills upward. Electrical branch people handle substations, street lighting and pump houses. Mechanical branch people mostly sit with workshops and machinery maintenance.
It is field work and you will travel. In rural postings you may cover three or four blocks. If you want an air-conditioned desk job, this is not it. If you want responsibility early, it's very good.
Vacancy details
The 2026 calendar shows about 900 posts under Group-03, which includes Sub Engineer along with some other technical posts. Branch-wise split will only be known when the advertisement drops. For reference, here is what the last cycle looked like.

Historically Civil takes the biggest share, usually 60 percent or more, followed by Electrical and then Mechanical. If you are from Electronics or Instrumentation, check the advertisement carefully before paying the fee, because those branches appear only in some cycles.
Eligibility
Education. A full-time diploma in the relevant engineering branch from an AICTE approved or MP State Board of Technical Education institute. A BE or BTech in the same branch is accepted for most posts. Correspondence diplomas are usually rejected at document verification.
Age. Counted as on 1 January of the recruitment year.

Domicile. You do not need MP domicile to write the paper. But reserved category benefit, age relaxation and the lower fee apply only to MP domicile candidates. An OBC candidate from UP is treated as unreserved here. That single rule decides a lot of results.
Physical standards. None. There is no PET or PST for Sub Engineer. Medical fitness is checked before joining.

Applications go through the MPESB portal only. You will need a valid MP Online kiosk or your own login.

Steps to apply:
- Register on esb.mp.gov.in and create your profile.
- Get your identity verified through Aadhaar based e-KYC. Do this early, it fails often.
- Fill the form, choose your engineering branch and exam city preferences.
- Upload photo and signature in the exact size given in the notification.
- Pay the fee online and save the receipt PDF.
Choose your exam city sensibly. MPESB conducts the paper in shifts across many centres, and travelling 300 km at 5 am does nothing for your score.
Exam pattern
One computer based test. That is the whole written stage.

Duration is 3 hours. All questions carry 1 mark. There is no negative marking, so leave nothing blank. The paper is bilingual, English and Hindi. Normalisation is applied when the exam runs in multiple shifts.
Selection is: CBT score, then document verification, then medical. No interview. Your marks decide everything.
Detailed syllabus
Part A: General knowledge and aptitude (100 marks)
General Hindi. Sandhi, samas, upsarg and pratyay, vilom and paryayvachi shabd, muhavare and lokoktiyan, ashuddhi shodhan, apathit gadyansh.
General English. Tenses, articles, prepositions, voice, narration, synonyms, antonyms, one word substitution, idioms, error spotting, short comprehension.
Mathematics. Number system, LCM and HCF, percentage, ratio, average, profit and loss, interest, time and work, time speed distance, mensuration, basic algebra, data interpretation. Nothing beyond class 10 level. Our Quantitative Aptitude complete guide covers this list with shortcuts.
Reasoning. Series, coding decoding, blood relations, direction sense, syllogism, seating arrangement, analogy, odd one out, puzzles, non-verbal figures. Work through the Reasoning complete guide chapter by chapter rather than jumping around.
General Science. Class 8 to 10 physics, chemistry and biology. Motion, light, sound, electricity, acids and bases, metals, human body systems, diseases, nutrition.
General Knowledge. Indian history with emphasis on the freedom struggle, geography, polity, economy basics, sports and awards. MP specific GK matters a lot here: districts and divisions, rivers, national parks, tribes, folk dances, dams and power projects, state schemes. Computer knowledge. Input and output devices, memory, operating systems, MS Office, internet and email, shortcut keys, basic networking, cyber security terms.
Part B: Technical (100 marks)
Civil Engineering. Building materials, building construction, strength of materials, theory of structures, RCC and steel design, surveying (chain, compass, levelling, theodolite, contouring), fluid mechanics and hydraulics, irrigation engineering, water supply and sanitary engineering, highway engineering, soil mechanics, estimating and costing, CPM and PERT.
Electrical Engineering. Circuit laws and network theorems, AC fundamentals, three phase circuits, DC machines, transformers, induction and synchronous machines, generation transmission and distribution, switchgear and protection, measuring instruments, estimating and costing, illumination, basic electronics, control systems, IE rules and safety.
Mechanical Engineering. Engineering mechanics, strength of materials, theory of machines, machine design, thermodynamics, IC engines, boilers and turbines, refrigeration and air conditioning, fluid machinery, heat transfer, manufacturing processes, welding, casting, machine tools, metrology, industrial engineering.
Part B is the section that decides your rank. Everyone loses or gains 15 to 20 marks there, while Part A scores stay bunched together.
Salary and career growth
Sub Engineer sits in pay scale Rs 9,300 to 34,800 with grade pay Rs 3,200, which maps to an entry basic near Rs 28,700 in most departments.

Probation is normally two or three years, and in-hand during probation is lower in some departments. After that, promotion goes Sub Engineer to Assistant Engineer to Executive Engineer, mostly by seniority. A diploma holder who joins at 24 can realistically reach Assistant Engineer in the second half of their career.
Previous year cut off
Official MPESB cut offs are branch and category specific. These figures are from the last two Civil Engineering cycles and should be read as a guide, not a promise.

Read that table honestly. A UR candidate needs around 80 percent to be safe. That is a high bar and it exists because there is no negative marking, so everyone attempts all 200 questions.
Books and preparation strategy
For the technical part, stick to what you already used in your diploma. Add one objective book: RS Khurmi for Civil, JB Gupta for Electrical, RK Jain for Mechanical. For Part A, Lucent GK plus one MP Samanya Gyan book is enough.
Months 1 and 2. Revise the full technical syllabus subject by subject, one subject every four or five days, with 50 objective questions at the end of each. Do 45 minutes of maths and reasoning daily using topic-wise practice sets.
Month 3. Finish MP GK completely. Districts, rivers, parks, tribes, schemes. Write it out, do not just read. Start General Science and computer.
Month 4. Full-length mocks twice a week from the free mock test series, followed by two hours of analysis. Analysis matters more than the mock itself.
Last 3 weeks. Only revision and previous year papers. No new books. For a ready-made timetable, use our daily study plan.
Three hours for 200 questions is roughly 54 seconds per question. Practise at that speed or your accuracy in the last 40 questions will collapse.
Common mistakes and honest advice
Most candidates spend 80 percent of their time on technical and then score 55 out of 100 in Part A. That is where selections are lost. Part A is easier to improve, so give it at least 40 percent of your hours.
Second, ignoring MP GK. Ten to fifteen questions come straight from Madhya Pradesh, and they are the cheapest marks in the paper.
Third, waiting for the notification to start. The gap between notification and exam is often under two months. People who begin in that window rarely clear it.
Be realistic too. Nine hundred posts against lakhs of diploma holders in MP is brutal. Keep a parallel target running. Many Sub Engineer aspirants also prepare for SSC CGL or RRB NTPC, since Part A overlaps almost completely.

Is MP Vyapam Sub Engineer 2026 notification out? No. As of 30 July 2026 only the calendar entry exists. The detailed advertisement is still awaited.

Sub Engineer is one of those posts where the effort actually matches the reward. One paper, no interview, no physical test, and a stable technical job in your own state. The syllabus is fixed and it does not change every year, which means a candidate who starts early has a real edge over one who waits.
Start with your technical subjects this month, because that is the half you already know and can push to 85 plus. Then build MP GK slowly over the next few weeks. When the notification finally comes, you want to be revising, not learning.
