16 | Guntur chilli: spice, market and district

Guntur district's One District One Product page identifies chilli as a signature crop and describes its large market role. The district's general page also links chilli cultivation with processing and exports. These sources support the stable Guntur–chilli association. Their percentages, hectares and trade ranking refer to the publication's chosen period; do not copy them into a permanent MCQ without year, numerator and denominator.

Chilli is a spice and horticultural/commercial crop. Growing chilli, drying it, powdering it and making sauces or pickles are different value-chain stages. Guntur Market Yard is a trading centre; it is not itself a farm. A candidate should be able to distinguish a crop district, a market yard and a processing cluster on a map. Guntur also grows cereals and pulses, so “only chilli grows in Guntur” is false even when the crop is economically prominent.

Worked example: Guntur's chilli identity links cultivation, trade and processing, but each stage has different geography. A market in Guntur can receive produce from other districts; a processing exporter may buy across states. If an MCQ asks which crop is associated with the market, answer chilli. If it asks district production share, do not infer it from market arrivals alone.

Active recall: Explain the Guntur–chilli pair and name two later value-addition stages.

Cultivation, market and processing are separate steps.

Guntur's chilli chain separates cultivation, market arrivals and processing. A market location does not establish where every lot was grown.

Current district geometry: APSDMA. Crop and irrigation claims: credited agriculture and water-authority sources.
