AP Agriculture, Irrigation and Crops · Chapter 4
03 | Kharif, Rabi and summer crops

Kharif crops are normally associated with the southwest monsoon and sowing around the rainy season; Rabi follows the monsoon into cooler, drier months; summer or Zaid is a short intervening season where water permits. These are seasonal categories, not immutable lists. Andhra Pradesh's paddy is grown in both Kharif and Rabi according to AP State Seeds, so “paddy is always Kharif” is too rigid. Groundnut too may appear in more than one season depending on location and irrigation.

The Prakasam Chief Planning Office states that crop-estimation surveys cover important crops in both Kharif and Rabi. For exam recall, associate a season with its rainfall and temperature setting, then check crop examples from an official annual table. A crop's seed variety, sowing date and water source can change the local calendar. The actual crop year must be written as two years when it crosses a financial or seasonal boundary.

Worked example: A farmer plants rice with the monsoon in one locality and grows a short-duration crop after harvest. Kharif and Rabi name seasonal production windows, not permanent crop species. Some crops can be cultivated in more than one window with irrigation and suitable conditions. For an MCQ, first identify rainfall or sowing season, then the crop and district evidence.

Active recall: Why can paddy appear in both Kharif and Rabi questions without contradiction?

Three crop seasons

Kharif, Rabi and summer describe timing; the same crop can occur in more than one season.
