AP Agriculture, Irrigation and Crops · Chapter 9
08 | Godavari and Krishna delta systems

The Godavari and Krishna river deltas are central to AP's irrigated agriculture. A delta is a low-lying depositional region near a river's mouth; canals and barrages distribute managed flows across command areas. The Godavari and Krishna systems each have their own headworks, channels and districts. Being part of a delta does not imply that a field always receives the same water volume or that every hectare is under paddy.

Krishna district's official page lists paddy alongside maize, jowar, cotton, sugarcane, groundnut, pulses and chilli, demonstrating that a coastal district is not a one-crop monoculture. The irrigation-circle page identifies projects and ayacut, but those figures can reflect a specific project report date. For a map question, place Godavari's coast north of Krishna's mouth; for a project question, read the river and structure name exactly.

Worked example: A barrage diverts river water into delta canals; it is not the same as a storage reservoir. The Godavari and Krishna delta systems support intensive cropping through headworks, canals, drainage and field management. Water reaching a main canal does not guarantee every tail-end field receives it on time. Distinguish planned command from actual irrigated area in a question.

Active recall: Which delta lies generally north of the other on the AP coast? Why is a delta not the same as a single crop zone?
