Social & religious reform in Andhra
What to remember
- Kandukuri Veeresalingam (Rajahmundry) is the father of social reform in Andhra: Vivekavardhini 1874, Social Reform Association 1878, first widow remarriage 1881, Hithakarini Samajam 1906.
- All-India reform bodies set the pattern: Brahmo Samaj 1828, Prarthana Samaj 1867, Satya Shodhak Samaj 1873, Arya Samaj 1875, Ramakrishna Mission 1897.
- Reform in thought ran alongside revolt on the ground: Uyyalawada 1846, Koya revolt 1862, Rampa 1879 and 1922.

Why reform was needed
In the 19th century British rule brought English education, printing presses, railways and new laws. Educated Indians began to question old customs such as sati, child marriage, and the ban on widow remarriage. Reformers worked in two ways. Some formed religious societies. Others used the pen, the stage and the school to change social habits.
Key British steps that helped reformers:
| Step | Year | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Charter Act (end of Company trade monopoly) | 1813 | Opened India to missionaries and Western ideas |
| Abolition of Sati | 1829 | Passed under Governor-General William Bentinck |
| Macaulay's Minute on Education | 1835 | Favoured English education |
| Wood's Despatch | 1854 | Education policy; led to universities |
| Hindu Widow Remarriage Act | 1856 | Made widow remarriage legal |
| Universities of Madras, Calcutta, Bombay | 1857 | Modern higher education |
| Age of Consent Act | 1891 | Dealt with child marriage |
William Bentinck was the first Governor-General of India. Lord Dalhousie, called the Maker of Modern India, followed the Doctrine of Lapse (1848).

Raja Ram Mohan Roy wrote Tuhfat-ul-Muwahhidin. Dayananda's book is Satyarth Prakash. Do not mix up the two.
Kandukuri Veeresalingam: the Andhra reformer
Veeresalingam was born at Rajahmundry. He is known as Gadya Tikkana (the Tikkana of prose). He is also called the first Telugu novel author. His main work:
- Vivekavardhini magazine, started in 1874, to spread reform ideas.
- Rajahmundry Social Reform Association, founded in 1878.
- First widow remarriage in Andhra, conducted at Rajahmundry in 1881.
- Hithakarini Samajam, founded in 1906. The name is also spelled Hitakarini Samaj.
- Writings: Rajasekhara Charitamu and Satyavati Charitra.
His work made widow remarriage and women's education a public topic. Rajahmundry became the centre of Andhra reform. Durgabai Deshmukh, who later founded the Andhra Mahila Sabha (1937), was also born at Rajahmundry.
Gurajada Apparao and reform literature
Gurajada Apparao was born at Rayavaram and is linked with Vizianagaram. His play Kanyasulkam attacks the custom of bride price. His other works include Mutyala Saralu and the patriotic song Desamunu Preminchumanna. Literature was a tool of reform. Elsewhere, Anandamath (with the song Vande Mataram) was written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, Sahitya Samrat. Neel Darpan by Dinabandhu Mitra exposed indigo planters. Gulamgiri is by Phule.
Resistance in Andhra: revolts that ran beside reform
Reform changed minds; revolts showed anger against British revenue and forest rules.
| Event | Year | Leader / place |
|---|---|---|
| Revolt of the Nawab of Kurnool | 1839 | Kurnool |
| Revolt of Uyyalawada Narasimha Reddy | 1846 | Born at Rupanagudi; Rayalaseema |
| His execution at Koilkuntla | 1847 | Koilkuntla (Nandyal district) |
| Koya revolt, Godavari region | 1862 | Koya chiefs (Tomma Dora led the 1879-80 rising) |
| Rampa rebellion of Koya chiefs | 1879 | Eastern Ghats |
| Rampa Rebellion | 1922 | Alluri Sitarama Raju |
| Attack on Chintapalli police station | 1922 | Alluri Sitarama Raju |
| Death of Alluri Sitarama Raju | 1924 | - |
Alluri Sitarama Raju is called Manyam Veerudu (hero of the hills). He is linked with the old Visakhapatnam Agency, now mostly Alluri Sitharama Raju district (Chintapalli lies there). The Rampa region lies in the Eastern Ghats.
Revolt of 1857 and other national revolts
1857 is the First War of Independence. It began with the sepoy mutiny at Meerut on 10 May 1857; Mangal Pandey's earlier outbreak was at Barrackpore (March 1857).
| Centre | Leader |
|---|---|
| Delhi | Bahadur Shah Zafar |
| Kanpur | Nana Sahib |
| Jhansi | Rani Lakshmibai (Manikarnika) |
| Lucknow | Begum Hazrat Mahal |
| Bihar (Arrah, Jagdishpur) | Kunwar Singh |
| Gwalior | Tantia Tope |
| Faizabad | Maulvi Ahmadullah Shah |
| Hyderabad Residency attack | Turrebaz Khan |
Other revolts: Santhal rebellion (Sidhu and Kanhu), Munda rebellion (Birsa Munda), Indigo revolt (Digambar Biswas), Kuka movement (Baba Ram Singh), Wahabi movement (Syed Ahmed Barelvi), Pabna revolt (Ishan Chandra Roy). The Vellore Mutiny took place in 1806.
Land and education: the colonial setting
Reform and revolt both grew from British policy on land, law and schools.
| System / body | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Permanent Settlement (1793, Lord Cornwallis) | Fixed revenue paid by zamindars |
| Ryotwari (Madras, 1820, Thomas Munro) | Direct settlement with cultivators |
| Mahalwari | Village-wise land revenue |
| Subsidiary Alliance (Lord Wellesley) | Princes pay for British troops |
| Indian Penal Code (1860, Macaulay) | Common criminal law |
| Indian Forest Act (1878) | Controlled forest use; angered hill tribes |
| Hunter Commission (1882, W. W. Hunter) | Review of education |
Early learning centres: Asiatic Society of Bengal (1784, William Jones), Fort William College (1800), Hindu College of Calcutta (1817). The Archaeological Survey of India began in 1861 under Alexander Cunningham. Arthur Cotton built the Dowleswaram Barrage on the Godavari and the Krishna Anicut at Vijayawada, which changed farming in the delta.
Political awakening
The Indian National Congress was founded in 1885 by A. O. Hume. W. C. Bonnerjee was its first president. Earlier bodies include the Madras Native Association (1852), Indian Association of Calcutta (1876, Surendranath Banerjee, called Rashtraguru) and Madras Mahajana Sabha (1884). The Muslim League began in 1906. Moderate leaders included Dadabhai Naoroji (Grand Old Man of India), Gokhale and Pherozeshah Mehta. Extremist leaders included Tilak (Lokmanya), Bipin Chandra Pal, Lala Lajpat Rai and Aurobindo Ghose.
Madras session of Congress in 1887 was chaired by Badruddin Tyabji, the first Muslim president.
Exam traps
- Gadya Tikkana is Veeresalingam. Do not confuse him with the medieval poet Tikkana.

Background and context
In the nineteenth century the Telugu country was ruled in two very different ways. The coastal districts and Rayalaseema belonged to the Madras Presidency, run directly by the British. Much of the Telangana region lay in the princely state of Hyderabad. This chapter looks at the Madras side, because that is where the reform movement of the Telugu people took shape.
British rule brought new tools into the lives of ordinary people: English schools, printing presses, railways, a common criminal law and a new system of land revenue. These tools had two effects. Educated Indians began to ask hard questions about old customs, such as child marriage and the ban on the remarriage of widows. At the same time, farmers and forest dwellers felt the weight of new taxes and new rules, and some of them took up arms.
So the period has two faces. One face is the reformer with a pen, a school and a society. The other face is the rebel in the hills. The two did not meet, but both grew from the same colonial soil. Reformers wanted to change society from inside. Rebels wanted the foreign rule to loosen its grip on land and forest.
Three laws and decisions from outside Andhra set the stage for the reformers:
| Step | Year | Why it mattered |
|---|---|---|
| Abolition of sati | 1829 | Showed that law could be used against a harmful custom |
| Macaulay's Minute on Education | 1835 | Favoured English as the language of higher teaching |
| Hindu Widows' Remarriage Act | 1856 | Made the remarriage of Hindu widows legal |
The Act of 1856 is easy to misread. It did not make widows remarry. It only removed the legal barrier. In the Telugu country the real struggle began later, when families, priests and neighbours refused to accept such marriages even though the law allowed them.
Reform in thought: the national and the local
Reform had already begun elsewhere in India before it reached the Telugu districts. Raja Ram Mohan Roy founded the Brahmo Samaj in 1828. The Prarthana Samaj followed in 1867, the Satya Shodhak Samaj of Jyotiba Phule in 1873, and the Arya Samaj of Dayananda Saraswati in 1875. The Ramakrishna Mission, set up by Swami Vivekananda, came in 1897. These bodies gave Telugu reformers ideas and a method: study the old texts, argue in public, and build a society to carry the work.
Telugu reformers had to meet their own local resistance. The strongest answer came from the town of Rajahmundry on the Godavari.
Kandukuri Veeresalingam: the man and his method
Child marriage touched Kandukuri Veeresalingam's own life. At the age of 14 he was married to a girl of nine, and in later years he fought the custom hard. He was born in Rajahmundry on 16 April 1848. After matriculation in 1869 he began as a teacher in a village school, and only later did he go deeper into Telugu, Sanskrit and Hindi. He died in Madras on 27 May 1919.
His method had four parts. He wrote. He started a journal. He opened schools. He formed societies. Each part supported the others.
The pen. In 1880 he published Rajasekhara Charitramu, which is widely called the first Telugu novel. It told a story in the plain language of common people, and it carried a message about right conduct. He also wrote plays, including Prahlada and Satya Harischandra, both in 1886. He is called Gadya Tikkana, meaning the Tikkana of prose, because he did for Telugu prose what the medieval poet Tikkana had done for verse. Do not mix the two men.
The journal. Vivekavardhini was the magazine through which he attacked social evils. It spoke about the education of women, widow remarriage, child marriage, casteism, superstition and corruption in government. The date is a point on which sources differ. The standard exam answer is 1874. Some reference works give 1876. If a question gives both as options, look for other clues. The safe fact is that the magazine began in the mid-1870s. He used jokes, satire and the form of a conversation, so that ordinary readers could follow his points. He also published a monthly for women, called Satihita Bodhini.
The school. He opened a school at Dowleswaram in 1874. Later he built the Brahmo Mandir in Rajahmundry in 1887. In 1908 a school called Hithakarini School was built. The Hithakarini Samajam, the body behind it, was founded in 1906. The name is also spelt Hitakarini. The word means "doer of good".
The society. In 1878 he founded the Rajahmundry Social Reform Association. A remarriage association worked under him as well. Through these bodies he gave reform a group of workers, not only one leader.
The first widow remarriage, 1881
The best-known act of his life took place in Rajahmundry on 11 December 1881. This was the first widow remarriage in the Telugu country. It took place twenty-five years after the Act of 1856. That gap is worth remembering. The law existed, but it took a determined man to put it into practice.
The event was not easy to arrange. Families who took part risked being cast out by their caste. Priests and neighbours showed anger. He made his case in public and worked to find willing families. Over the years, he arranged more such marriages. Later he also created a home for widows, because a widow who was turned away by her family needed a place to live.
The Government honoured him with the title Rao Bahadur in 1893. He attended the first meeting of the Indian National Congress in 1885. A postage stamp in his memory was issued in 1974.
Gurajada Apparao and the use of literature
Reform did not need only societies. It also needed stories and songs that ordinary people would remember. Gurajada Apparao, born at Rayavaram and linked with the town of Vizianagaram, used the stage for this purpose. His play Kanyasulkam attacks the custom of bride price, in which the family of a girl took money from the groom, so that old men could buy young brides. It is remembered for its sharp, lively speech. His poem collection Mutyala Saralu, and his patriotic song beginning Desamunu Preminchumanna, are also well known.
The way to remember the two writers is simple. Veeresalingam gave the first novel and a reform journal. Gurajada gave a reform play. Both used the Telugu of daily life.
Elsewhere in India, literature played the same role. Bankim Chandra Chatterjee wrote Anandamath, which contains the song Vande Mataram. Dinabandhu Mitra wrote Neel Darpan about indigo planters. Jyotiba Phule wrote Gulamgiri about caste.
Administration and economy: why the countryside was uneasy
Reform affected mostly the educated towns. The villages and the hills felt a different pressure: the revenue and forest policy of the Company and then the Crown.
In the Madras Presidency the main land system was the ryotwari system, under which the government dealt directly with the cultivator and fixed the tax on each holding. In theory this protected the farmer from middlemen. In practice a high demand for revenue could crush him. One account of the Rayalaseema revolt says the system raised revenue by squeezing poorer cultivators.
Forests were also brought under control. The Madras Forest Act of 1882 limited the free movement of hill people in the forests where they lived. It also stopped their old method of shifting cultivation, known as podu. For people who had always lived off the forest, this was a threat to their daily bread.
Not all large changes were harmful. Arthur Cotton built the Dowleswaram Barrage on the Godavari and the Krishna Anicut at Vijayawada. These works brought regular water to the delta lands and made the coastal region richer. This difference is one reason why the coast became the home of reform and education, while the hills and dry interior produced armed revolts.
Society, religion and culture: revolt beside reform
#### Uyyalawada Narasimha Reddy, 1846-47
Start with the end of the story. On 22 February 1847 Uyyalawada Narasimha Reddy was hanged at Koilkuntla, before a crowd reported as two thousand people. This was the first great rising of the period, and it grew in the Rayalaseema country.
Three grievances lay behind it. Reddy, born at Rupanagudi, belonged to a family of old local chiefs and drew a hereditary pension from the government. It was reported as only eleven rupees a month, far below what comparable families received. Related estates had lapsed to the government, and his requests for a raise were refused. On top of this, the Company took over the land of villagers who had died, and this caused anger.
The rising itself began near Koilkuntla in July 1846, and Vadde Obanna is named as an early leader. About five thousand peasants are reported to have followed Reddy. When government troops came, he took shelter in the hill forts of the Erramala and Nallamala hills, until he was captured. The authorities issued warrants against nearly a thousand rebels, yet only a small number were finally convicted. His head is said to have hung in a cage at the fort until 1877, a warning meant to frighten others.
Remember the pairing: the revolt is 1846, the execution is 1847, and the place is Koilkuntla.
#### The Koya risings and Rampa, 1879
In the Godavari hills the Koya people and their chiefs rose in 1862, and again in the Rampa rising of 1879-80. The Rampa area lies in the Eastern Ghats. Tomma Dora led the 1879-80 rising. The cause was a mix of taxes, the power of local middlemen and the pressure on hill land.
#### Alluri Sitarama Raju and the Rampa Rebellion, 1922-24
The most famous revolt of the Telugu region took place in the same hills more than forty years later. Alluri Sitarama Raju was born on 4 July 1897 (a date given in an official biography). He left a settled life, took the dress of a sannyasi, and made his home among the hill people. He taught them, gave them medical help, and told them that the products of the forest belonged to them. He prepared them to resist the Madras Forest Act of 1882. Many local people believed he had supernatural powers.
An important reason for the strength of the revolt was that the muttadars, the hereditary revenue collectors of the hill country, had lost their old authority under British rule. They joined with the tribal people against the new order.
The uprising began in August 1922. On 22 August a band of over three hundred followers attacked the police station at Chintapalli. Raju's men used guerrilla methods: raids on police posts, withdrawal into the forest and surprise attacks. The government needed a long and costly campaign to bring the area under control. One official account states that it cost more than forty lakh rupees. Diseases to which the hill people had grown used also hurt the government troops.
Raju was caught and killed on 7 May 1924. He is remembered as Manyam Veerudu, meaning the hero of the hills. The 125th anniversary of his birth was marked by year-long celebrations in 2022.
Revolt of 1857 and the national setting
The great revolt of 1857, called the first war of independence in the school tradition, began with the sepoy rising at Meerut on 10 May 1857. Earlier trouble had occurred at Barrackpore in March 1857. Its leaders included Bahadur Shah Zafar at Delhi, Nana Sahib at Kanpur, Rani Lakshmibai at Jhansi, Begum Hazrat Mahal at Lucknow and Tantia Tope. In the Telugu area, there was an attack on the Hyderabad Residency led by Turrebaz Khan.
After 1857 the Crown took over the government of India. Queen Victoria's Proclamation of 1858 announced the change. Reform bodies of the next decades worked in a country that was now under direct royal rule.
Decline, legacy and sites to know
Reform and revolt ended differently. The reform movement did not end in defeat. Its ideas settled into law, school and custom over many decades, and Veeresalingam's work is remembered as the basis of modern social change in Andhra. The revolts were crushed, but they too became part of memory. Reddy's death, and Raju's, were later remembered by the national movement. In 2021 the airport at Kurnool was named after Uyyalawada Narasimha Reddy.

How examiners use this chapter
- Order of Veeresalingam's work. Journal (mid-1870s, standard answer 1874), Social Reform Association (1878), first widow remarriage (1881), Hithakarini Samajam (1906). Questions ask you to arrange these in order.
- Law versus action. The Hindu Widows' Remarriage Act is 1856; the first widow remarriage in Andhra is 1881. Examiners often put these two dates together.
- Writer and work. Rajasekhara Charitramu goes with Veeresalingam. Kanyasulkam and Mutyala Saralu go with Gurajada. Do not swap them.
- Name traps. Gadya Tikkana is Veeresalingam, not the old poet Tikkana. Vivekavardhini is a magazine. Hithakarini Samajam is an organisation.
- Two dates for Rampa. The Koya chiefs rose in 1879. Alluri Sitarama Raju led the rebellion of 1922. Join each leader to his own date.
- Revolt dates. Uyyalawada revolt 1846; execution 1847 at Koilkuntla. Alluri's attack on Chintapalli was in 1922 and he died in 1924.
- All-India founders. Brahmo Samaj 1828 (Roy), Prarthana Samaj 1867, Satya Shodhak Samaj 1873 (Phule), Arya Samaj 1875 (Dayananda), Ramakrishna Mission 1897 (Vivekananda).
- Books and authors. Neel Darpan is about indigo, Gulamgiri about caste, Satyarth Prakash by Dayananda, and Anandamath carries Vande Mataram.
Worked cases
Case 1: Arrange in order: Hithakarini Samajam, first widow remarriage in Andhra, Vivekavardhini magazine, Rajahmundry Social Reform Association.
Reasoning:
- 1. Vivekavardhini was started in 1874 to spread reform ideas.
- 2. The Social Reform Association was founded in 1878.
- 3. The first widow remarriage in Andhra took place at Rajahmundry in 1881.
- 4. Hithakarini Samajam was founded in 1906.
Takeaway: Veeresalingam's work runs 1874, 1878, 1881, 1906: magazine, association, action, samajam.
Case 2: Which work is NOT by Kandukuri Veeresalingam: Rajasekhara Charitamu, Satyavati Charitra, Kanyasulkam, Vivekavardhini?
Reasoning:
- 1. Rajasekhara Charitamu and Satyavati Charitra are his writings.
- 2. Vivekavardhini is the magazine he started.
- 3. Kanyasulkam attacks the custom of bride price. It is a play by Gurajada Apparao, who also wrote Mutyala Saralu.
- 4. So Kanyasulkam is the answer.
Takeaway: Pair Gurajada with Kanyasulkam and Veeresalingam with Rajasekhara Charitamu.
Case 3: "The Rampa rebellion was led by Alluri Sitarama Raju in 1879." Is this correct?
Reasoning:
- 1. Rampa has two dates.
- 2. The 1879 rising was by Koya chiefs.
- 3. The 1922 rebellion was led by Alluri Sitarama Raju, who attacked the Chintapalli police station in 1922.
- 4. The statement mixes the leader of 1922 with the year 1879, so it is wrong.
Takeaway: When one name has two dates, tie each leader to his own date.
Case 4: Match the founder: Prarthana Samaj, Satya Shodhak Samaj, Arya Samaj, Brahmo Samaj.
Reasoning:
- 1. Brahmo Samaj is the oldest (1828), founded by Raja Ram Mohan Roy.
- 2. Prarthana Samaj (1867) was founded by Atmaram Pandurang, not by Roy.
- 3. Satya Shodhak Samaj (1873) was founded by Jyotiba Phule, who wrote Gulamgiri.
- 4. Arya Samaj (1875) was founded by Dayananda Saraswati, who wrote Satyarth Prakash.
Takeaway: Use the book to remember the founder: Gulamgiri - Phule, Satyarth Prakash - Dayananda, Tuhfat-ul-Muwahhidin - Roy.
Compare and contrast
| Work | Author | Theme or note |
|---|---|---|
| Anandamath, Vande Mataram | Bankim Chandra Chatterjee | Called Sahitya Samrat |
| Neel Darpan | Dinabandhu Mitra | Indigo planters |
| Gulamgiri | Jyotiba Phule | Satya Shodhak Samaj |
| Satyarth Prakash | Dayananda Saraswati | Arya Samaj |
| Tuhfat-ul-Muwahhidin | Raja Ram Mohan Roy | Brahmo Samaj |
| Poverty and Un-British Rule in India | Dadabhai Naoroji | Grand Old Man of India |
| Economic History of India | R. C. Dutt | - |
| Kanyasulkam | Gurajada Apparao | Bride price |
| Revolt | Region | Leader |
|---|---|---|
| Santhal rebellion | Rajmahal hills | Sidhu and Kanhu |
| Munda movement | Chotanagpur | Birsa Munda |
| Kol rebellion | Chotanagpur | Buddhu Bhagat |
| Indigo revolt | Bengal | Digambar Biswas |
| Pabna revolt | Bengal | Ishan Chandra Roy |
| Kuka movement | Punjab | Baba Ram Singh |
| Paika rebellion | Odisha | Bakshi Jagabandhu |
| Kittur revolt | - | Rani Chennamma |
| Poligar war at Panchalankurichi | - | Veerapandiya Kattabomman |
How to use these tables: for authors, remember the one idea that goes with each book. Neel Darpan is about indigo, Gulamgiri is about caste, and Kanyasulkam is about bride price. For revolts, remember the region first. Chotanagpur has Munda and Kol, Bengal has Indigo and Pabna, Punjab has Kuka and Odisha has Paika. The Andhra tribes in the same period are linked to regions: Koya and Konda Reddi with the Godavari region, Savara with the Srikakulam region and Yanadi with the Nellore region. Notice that the Hindu Widow Remarriage Act was passed in 1856, but the first widow remarriage in Andhra was in 1881.
