The Kakatiyas
What to remember
- Order of kings: Beta I, Prola I, Beta II, Prola II, Rudra Deva, Mahadeva, Ganapati Deva, Rudrama Devi, Prataparudra. Prola II was the first independent ruler; Ganapati Deva moved the capital from Hanamkonda to Warangal.
- Rudrama Devi (accession 1262) was the first woman ruler of the dynasty and used the name Rudradeva. Her successor Prataparudra saw the fall of the kingdom in 1323.
- Great works: Thousand Pillar Temple (1163, Rudra Deva), Ramappa Temple (1213, Recherla Rudra, UNESCO 2021), Warangal Fort and Pakhal Lake (Ganapati Deva).

Capitals and early rulers
The Kakatiyas first ruled from Hanamkonda (also spelt Hanumakonda). Later they ruled from Warangal. The kings in order are:
| No. | King | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Beta I | Earliest named ruler |
| 2 | Prola I | Follows Beta I |
| 3 | Beta II | Follows Prola I |
| 4 | Prola II | Usually given as first independent ruler; his son Rudra Deva proclaimed independence in 1163 |
| 5 | Rudra Deva | Built the Thousand Pillar Temple |
| 6 | Mahadeva | Follows Rudra Deva |
| 7 | Ganapati Deva | Moved capital to Warangal; built the Warangal Fort |
| 8 | Rudrama Devi | First woman ruler; accession 1262 |
| 9 | Prataparudra (II) | Last ruler; accession 1289 |
Learn this list as one chain. Questions often ask "who came after Mahadeva" or "who came before Rudrama Devi".
The name Prola II is important. Many exam keys call him the first independent ruler, though his son Rudra Deva formally proclaimed independence in 1163 (Anumakonda inscription). Before this the family ruled under the Western Chalukyas.

Ganapati Deva and Rudrama Devi
Ganapati Deva came to the throne in 1199. He is the king who moved the capital from Hanamkonda to Warangal. He built the Warangal Fort and Pakhal Lake. Pakhal is in the Warangal area.
He issued the Motupalli Abhaya Shasanam in 1244. It deals with the protection of overseas traders. Motupalli was the port on the coast. The edict shows that the Kakatiyas cared about sea trade and gave traders safety and fair treatment.
Rudrama Devi was the daughter of Ganapati Deva. She was the first woman ruler of the Kakatiyas and ruled from 1262. She used the male name Rudradeva (also written Rudradeva Maharaja) in records. She died in 1289, and Prataparudra followed her. Marco Polo visited Motupalli a few years later, around 1292-93.
Fall of the Kakatiyas
Prataparudra was the last king. Delhi's armies attacked Warangal several times.
- Malik Kafur attacked Warangal in 1309 or 1310.
- Ulugh Khan attacked first in 1321.
- Ulugh Khan's second siege in 1323 ended Kakatiya rule.
After the fall, a revolt began against the Delhi Sultanate. It was led by Prolaya Nayaka (Musunuri Prolaya Nayaka), the founder of the Musunuri Nayaks. His successor was Kapaya Nayaka. In 1336 the Musunuri Nayaks recaptured Warangal, and Warangal became their capital. This is the link to the next chapters.

Jayapa Senani had the epithet Gajasahini, meaning chief of the elephant force. Palkuriki Somanatha was born at Palakurthi. The dance form Perini Shivatandavam belongs to Telangana and is linked with Warangal.
Capitals of neighbouring powers
Exams also ask the Kakatiya capital next to other South Indian capitals. Keep this table in mind.
| Dynasty | Capital |
|---|---|
| Kakatiyas | Warangal (early: Hanamkonda) |
| Hoysalas | Dwarasamudra |
| Yadavas of Devagiri | Devagiri |
| Pandyas | Madurai |
| Cholas | Thanjavur |
| Western Chalukyas of Kalyani | Kalyani |
| Rashtrakutas | Manyakheta |
| Vijayanagara Empire | Hampi |
| Musunuri Nayaks | Warangal |
Note that the Musunuri Nayaks also used Warangal. Harihara I founded Vijayanagara, the Hoysala founder was Sala, and the Khalji and Tughlaq dynasties of Delhi were founded by Jalaluddin Khalji and Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq. Delhi's Khalji and Tughlaq rulers are the powers whose armies attacked Warangal, and the Musunuris rose against Delhi.
Poet titles that help in Kakatiya questions
Many literature questions list epithets. Nannaya is Adi Kavi. Tikkana is Kavi Brahma. Errana is Prabandha Parameshwara. Srinatha is Kavi Sarvabhauma. Allasani Peddana is Andhra Kavita Pitamaha. Krishnadevaraya is Andhra Bhoja. Tikkana, who wrote Nirvachanottara Ramayanam, belongs to the Kakatiya age of literature.
Exam traps
- Hanamkonda is the early capital; Warangal is the later one.
- Rudra Deva built the Thousand Pillar Temple; Recherla Rudra, a general, built the Ramappa Temple. Do not credit the king for both.
- Ganapati Deva built the Warangal Fort and Pakhal Lake.
- Rudrama Devi used the name Rudradeva, but Rudra Deva (one word apart) is an earlier king.
- Prola II is the first independent ruler, not Prola I.
- Malik Kafur's attack (1309 or 1310) is not the same event as Ulugh Khan's attacks (1321 and 1323).
- Marco Polo's visit (c. 1292-93) is linked to Motupalli, not Warangal.
- Prolaya Nayaka led the revolt; Kapaya Nayaka came after him.
One-liners
- 1. First independent Kakatiya ruler: Prola II.
- 2. First woman ruler: Rudrama Devi.
- 3. Capital moved to Warangal by Ganapati Deva.
- 4. Thousand Pillar Temple: built in 1163, deity Rudreshwara.
- 5. Ramappa Temple: built in 1213, deity Ramalingeswara.
- 6. Recherla Rudra built the Ramappa Temple.
- 7. Motupalli Abhaya Shasanam: 1244, protection of overseas traders.
- 8. Last Kakatiya king: Prataparudra; dynasty fell in 1323.
- 9. Musunuri Nayaks took back Warangal in 1336.
- 10. Ramappa Temple became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021.

Background and context
The Kakatiyas rose in the Telugu-speaking upland of the Deccan. Their family tradition names an early chief called Durjaya. For a long time the family was not a royal house. It served bigger powers as a vassal. First it served the Rashtrakutas. Later it served the Western Chalukyas of Kalyani.
The first well-known chief is Beta I. He received a small estate centred on Anumakonda, which is today's Hanamkonda. From this base the family grew step by step. The chiefs fought for their overlords and were paid with land and titles.
Early records of the family are in Kannada, because the Chalukya court used it. After the family became sovereign, the inscriptions turned to Telugu. This shift is a good sign of the change in status. The Kakatiyas became a Telugu royal house, and they brought the Telugu upland and the Telugu coast under one rule. That union of the two regions is one of their big achievements.
The origin of the family in caste terms is not settled. Some inscriptions of later kings claim a high warrior descent. Other evidence suggests humbler roots. Examiners do not ask about this, but it explains why the Kakatiyas later gave warriors of all birth a chance to rise.
Political history
Early chiefs and the road to independence. The chain of early chiefs is Beta I, Prola I, Beta II and Prola II. Prola II ruled in the early twelfth century. He expanded the family land and is linked with the turn towards Shaiva worship. Reference works disagree on how to describe him. Some treat him as the last chief who was still a vassal. Many exam books call him the first independent ruler. Many exam keys still give Prola II as the first independent ruler, but his son Rudra Deva formally proclaimed sovereignty in the Anumakonda inscription of 1163. If a question asks who declared independence, or names 1163, choose Rudra Deva. The safe fact behind both views is that real independence came in his time and his successor's time.
Rudra Deva. Rudra Deva came to the throne in the middle of the twelfth century and ruled until about 1195. The year 1163 is tied to him, both as a date of declared independence and as the date of the Thousand Pillar Temple. He is the king who made the break from the Chalukyas final, as their power was falling. He is also the king linked with Hanamkonda as the royal seat.
Mahadeva. Mahadeva followed Rudra Deva. His rule was short, from about 1195 to 1199. His reign is the bridge to the greatest king.
Ganapati Deva (1199-1262). Ganapati Deva ruled for more than sixty years. He is the great builder of the empire.
- He pushed the Kakatiya border east into the rich delta lands of the Godavari and the Krishna. This gave the kingdom the coast and its ports.
- He moved the main seat from Hanamkonda to Orugallu, which we now call Warangal.
- He rebuilt the fort of Warangal in stone and ringed it with strong walls.
- He built Pakhal Lake for irrigation.
- He gave a charter to sea traders in 1244. The charter is called the Motupalli Abhaya Shasanam.
The reasons for the move to Warangal are easy to follow. The king now held the coast and the plains. He needed a capital with a bigger plain around it and a stronger fort. He also needed good roads to the delta and to the port.
Rudrama Devi (1262-1289). Ganapati Deva had no son. He chose his daughter Rudrama as his heir. She began to share rule in the years around 1260. She was the sole ruler soon after, though the date of her formal crowning is debated. Many sources give 1262 as her accession. She used the male regnal name Rudra Deva Maharaja. She also used the title Raya Gajakesari.
Her reign was full of wars.
- The Yadavas of Devagiri invaded under their king Mahadeva. Records suggest she drove them back and even took some of their land.
- Around 1274 the Eastern Gangas of Odisha, who styled themselves Gajapati, came against the coast. Two brothers in her service, Poti Nayaka and Proli Nayaka, turned them back.
- She also won back land in the south, including Nellore, from small rulers who held it for the Pandyas.
- Ambadeva, a Kayastha chief, began as her servant but broke away and ruled on his own. Her last campaign, late in her life, was fought against his forces.
She died in 1289. Her grandson Prataparudra followed her. Note that this makes Prataparudra her grandson, not her son. The Venetian traveller Marco Polo visited the east coast around 1292-93, on his voyage home from China. He wrote well of the queen who ruled the Telugu country. He wrongly said she was the widow of the earlier king. Other records show she was the daughter. His account is a useful foreign view of Kakatiya trade and good rule.
Prataparudra (1289-1323). Prataparudra is also called Prataparudra II. He ruled in the age when the Delhi Sultanate was moving south.
- The Delhi army led by Malik Kafur, under Alauddin Khalji, attacked Warangal in 1309 or 1310. After a siege Prataparudra paid a large tribute and became a tributary. Treasure, including a famous diamond, went to Delhi.
- Under the Tughlaqs, the prince Ulugh Khan (later Muhammad bin Tughlaq) came south. Textbooks speak of a first attack in 1321 and a final siege in 1323. Some modern accounts count the first siege as 1323 itself, which failed when a false rumour of the Sultan's death spread among the soldiers. The army broke up.
- Ulugh Khan came back with a stronger force. The siege lasted some months. The fort fell in 1323. The king was taken to Delhi as a prisoner. Accounts say he died on the road, near the Narmada.
The kingdom was not strong enough to stand alone. Some chiefs had left it, and long wars had drained the treasury. The fall of 1323 ended the dynasty.

Administration and economy
Land and tanks. The upland Telugu country has little river water. The Kakatiyas solved this with tanks. They built a very large number of tanks and reservoirs across the land. Many of them are still used by farmers today. Pakhal Lake, Ramappa Lake and Laknavaram Lake are the names to know. A tank gave a village water for a second crop, and it supported new settlements. Better farming meant more tax and a stronger army.
The nayaka system. The kings ruled through military commanders called nayakas. A nayaka held land or income in return for soldiers. Birth did not decide who could hold the title. A peasant or a man of humble family could become a warrior-officer. During Rudrama Devi's rule, officers of this kind made up a growing part of the corps, and the old noble chiefs made up a shrinking part. Later the Vijayanagara kings used a similar system that they called amaram. The Kakatiya practice therefore matters for the next chapters.
Forts. The kingdom was held by a chain of forts. Warangal was the heart. Others such as Bhongir and Khammam guarded the road to the coast and the south. The fort of Warangal had three rings of defence: a stone wall without mortar, an outer earth wall, and a broad ditch.
Trade. Ganapati Deva wanted the sea trade to grow. His 1244 charter, the Abhaya Shasanam, was issued at Motupalli. It promised safety to overseas traders. Their goods would not be seized if a ship was wrecked. A simple fixed duty replaced many small taxes. Motupalli was the main port of the kingdom. It was an old harbour, with links to the lands of South-East Asia, China and the Middle East. Marco Polo called the realm by its name. Cloth, spices and diamonds from the Telugu region went out by this port.
Coins and revenue. The king's income came from land tax, trade duty and tribute from chiefs. The nayakas paid part of their income to the king and supplied soldiers.
Society, religion and culture
Religion. The early family likely favoured Jain beliefs, but the royal house moved to Shaivism under Prola II. Names such as Rudra, Mahadeva and Ganapati show this. The kings gave land and gifts to Shaiva temples and teachers. Many sects of Shaivism were active, and Veerashaiva ideas spread widely in the age of Ganapati Deva. Vaishnava shrines and Jain places also received support. The Thousand Pillar Temple is a good proof: it is built for Shiva, Vishnu and Surya together.
Society. Caste was not a strong barrier to service in the army. This gave society a spirit of movement. Women could also hold power, as Rudrama Devi shows.
Temple architecture. Kakatiya temples mix the Chalukya style of the Deccan with Dravidian touches. They are built on a raised, star-shaped base. They use dark dolerite for fine carving, polished like a lathe-turned object. Other features are perforated windows, a large mandapa and a carved Nandi bull.
- The Thousand Pillar Temple at Hanamkonda is a triple shrine (trikutalayam) for Shiva, Vishnu and Surya. The chief deity is Rudreshwara, which links the temple with the name of its builder. It has a star-shaped plan, a monolithic Nandi and many carved pillars. It was restored in modern times, with support from the Nizam in the past and a government project in 2004.
- The Ramappa Temple at Palampet, in Mulugu district, was begun in 1213 by the general Recherla Rudra under Ganapati Deva. It is famous because it carries the name of its chief sculptor, Ramappa. It uses red sandstone for the main frame, with dolerite for fine sculpture. Its tower is made of very light bricks. These bricks are porous and can float on water. UNESCO listed the temple as a World Heritage Site on 25 July 2021.
- The Warangal Fort was first made of brick. Ganapati Deva rebuilt it in stone, and Rudrama Devi and Prataparudra carried on the work. The four decorated gateways in the ruins are the Kakatiya Kala Thoranam. A Swayambhu Shiva temple stood inside, which was ruined in 1323. The fort later passed to the Musunuris, then to the Bahmanis, the Qutb Shahis and the Nizams.
Literature. The age of the Kakatiyas was a great age for Telugu writing. Court and temple supported poets in both Telugu and Sanskrit.
| Work or writer | What to remember |
|---|---|
| Palkuriki Somanatha | Wrote Basava Purana and Panditaradhya Charitra, early Telugu works with a Shaiva theme |
| Tikkana | Nirvachanottara Ramayanam; titled Kavi Brahma; served at the Nellore court of a Telugu Choda ruler and was linked with the Kakatiya court |
| Gona Buddha Reddy | Ranganatha Ramayanam |
| Jayapa Senani | Army chief of Ganapati Deva; wrote Nritta Ratnavali and Gita Ratnavali on dance and music |
| Vidyanatha | Prataparudra Yashobhushanam on poetics |
The dance and music works of Jayapa Senani show that the court also loved the arts. Perini Shivatandavam, a warrior dance for Shiva, is linked with the Kakatiya age and with Warangal.
Decline, legacy and sites to know
Decline. The causes are easy to list. First, the Delhi Sultanate had grown strong and sent repeated armies. Second, the Kakatiya kings had many fronts, with the Yadavas in the west and the Pandyas and Gajapatis near the coast. Third, some chiefs rebelled. Fourth, the tribute after 1310 weakened the treasury.
After the fall. Resistance to Delhi began soon after 1323. The leader was Prolaya Nayaka, who claimed to be of Kakatiya stock. He founded the Musunuri Nayaks and made a grant around 1330. His cousin Kapaya Nayaka then drove the Delhi governor out of Warangal in 1336, with some help from the Hoysala king Veera Ballala III. Warangal became their capital. The Musunuri state was short. The Bahmani Sultanate pressed it, and the Recherla Nayakas killed Kapaya Nayaka in 1368.
Legacy.
- The Kakatiyas joined the upland and coastal Telugu regions politically.
- Telugu became the language of the court and of inscriptions.
- The tank system fed later farming.
- The nayaka system passed to the Musunuris and then to Vijayanagara.
- The temples remain among the finest in South India.

How examiners use this chapter
- King order. They give the chain Beta I, Prola I, Beta II, Prola II, Rudra Deva, Mahadeva, Ganapati Deva, Rudrama Devi, Prataparudra. Learn who comes just before and just after each name.
- First independent ruler. Most keys give Prola II, never Prola I. If the question is about declaring independence in 1163, choose Rudra Deva.
- Capital shift. Hanamkonda was the early seat. Ganapati Deva moved it to Warangal.
- Builder pairs. Rudra Deva made the Thousand Pillar Temple (1163, Rudreshwara). Recherla Rudra, a general, made the Ramappa Temple (1213). Ganapati Deva made the Warangal Fort and Pakhal Lake.
- Rudrama Devi. She was the first woman ruler, with the regnal name Rudra Deva. Do not confuse her with the earlier king of that name. Marco Polo's visit (c. 1292-93) comes a few years after her usual death date of 1289, and it is linked with Motupalli.
- Motupalli charter. Abhaya Shasanam, 1244, safety for overseas traders, issued under Ganapati Deva.
- Delhi attacks. The order is Malik Kafur (1309 or 1310), then Ulugh Khan (1321 and 1323). The fall is 1323.
- After the fall. Prolaya Nayaka started the revolt. Kapaya Nayaka took Warangal back in 1336.
- Literature. Match each author to his work: Somanatha, Tikkana, Gona Buddha Reddy, Jayapa Senani, Vidyanatha.
Worked cases
Case 1: Arrange these events in order: (A) Fall of the Kakatiyas (B) Motupalli Abhaya Shasanam (C) Musunuri recapture of Warangal (D) Construction of the Ramappa Temple.
Reasoning:
- 1. Put the temple first. The Ramappa Temple was built in 1213.
- 2. The Motupalli Abhaya Shasanam came in 1244, which is after 1213.
- 3. The Kakatiyas fell in 1323 after Ulugh Khan's second siege.
- 4. The Musunuri Nayaks took back Warangal in 1336, after the fall.
Takeaway: Order is D, B, A, C. A fall always comes before a recapture.
Case 2: "Who built the Ramappa Temple?" Options: Rudra Deva, Ganapati Deva, Recherla Rudra, Prataparudra.
Reasoning:
- 1. Rudra Deva built the Thousand Pillar Temple in 1163, at Hanamkonda.
- 2. Ganapati Deva built the Warangal Fort and Pakhal Lake.
- 3. Recherla Rudra was a general. He built the Ramappa Temple in 1213 and the Pillalamarri Banyan Garden.
- 4. Prataparudra was the last king and is linked with the fall, not with this temple.
Takeaway: Match each monument to its builder. The king did not build every monument.
Case 3: "Which one is NOT linked with Ganapati Deva?" (1) Moving the capital to Warangal (2) Warangal Fort (3) Motupalli Abhaya Shasanam (4) Thousand Pillar Temple.
Reasoning:
- 1. Ganapati Deva came to the throne in 1199 and moved the capital from Hanamkonda to Warangal. Option 1 is linked.
- 2. He built the Warangal Fort. Option 2 is linked.
- 3. The Motupalli Abhaya Shasanam was issued in 1244 for overseas traders. Option 3 is linked.
- 4. The Thousand Pillar Temple was built in 1163 by Rudra Deva, who came before Ganapati Deva in the list. So option 4 is the answer.
Takeaway: Use the king list and the date to see who could have built a monument.
Case 4: "Rudrama Devi used the name Rudradeva. So she is the same as Rudra Deva." Is this correct?
Reasoning:
- 1. Rudrama Devi was the first woman ruler. She became ruler in 1262.
- 2. She used the male name Rudradeva in records.
- 3. Rudra Deva is the fifth king in the list and built the Thousand Pillar Temple.
- 4. Two persons share a similar name, so the statement is wrong.
Takeaway: Look-alike names need a second check on date and work.
Compare and contrast
| Look-alike pair | Detail A | Detail B |
|---|---|---|
| Malik Kafur and Ulugh Khan | Malik Kafur attacked Warangal in 1309 or 1310, in the Khalji period | Ulugh Khan attacked in 1321 and in 1323, under the Tughlaqs |
| Hanamkonda and Warangal | Hanamkonda: early capital | Warangal: later capital, also the Musunuri capital |
| Thousand Pillar Temple and Ramappa Temple | Built 1163 by Rudra Deva; deity Rudreshwara | Built 1213 by Recherla Rudra; deity Ramalingeswara |
| Prola I and Prola II | Prola I is the second king in the list | Prola II is the fourth king, usually given as the first independent ruler (his son Rudra Deva proclaimed independence in 1163) |
| Poet | Work or title |

| 2021 | Ramappa Temple named a UNESCO World Heritage Site |
King order: Beta I, Prola I, Beta II, Prola II, Rudra Deva, Mahadeva, Ganapati Deva, Rudrama Devi, Prataparudra.
How to use this timeline in the exam. Many questions give three or four events and ask for the correct order. Tie each date to a person. Ganapati Deva is 1199 and 1244. Rudrama Devi is 1262 and her death is 1289. Prataparudra begins in 1289 and ends in 1323. The Delhi attacks come in three steps: Malik Kafur, then Ulugh Khan's first attack, then his second siege. After the fall comes the Musunuri recapture.
Remember that the king list has nine names. Prola II is the fourth. Rudra Deva is the fifth. Ganapati Deva is the seventh. Rudrama Devi is the eighth. If a question asks who came right before Rudrama Devi, read the chain and give Ganapati Deva. If it asks who came right after her, give Prataparudra.
