> What to remember
> - Portuguese came first (Vasco da Gama 1498, Goa 1510); the English (1600), Dutch (1602) and French (1664) followed. Masulipatnam hosted the first English (1611) and Dutch (1605) factories in Andhra.
> - The Carnatic Wars (1746-1763) between English and French ended with British success: Wandiwash 1760, Pondicherry 1761, Treaty of Paris 1763.
> - Northern Circars were granted to the English in 1765; the Nizam gave up the Ceded Districts in 1800 after the Subsidiary Alliance (1798).
1. The coming of the Europeans
The Portuguese were the first European power to reach India by sea. Vasco da Gama reached Calicut in 1498. They took Goa in 1510. Francisco de Almeida was the first Governor of Portuguese India. The Blue Water Policy meant Portuguese naval supremacy. The Cartaz system gave naval trading permits.

Background and context
In the 1500s the sea route from Europe to India opened. The Portuguese came first: Vasco da Gama reached Calicut in 1498, and Goa was taken in 1510. The Portuguese controlled the sea with armed ships and sold trading permits called cartazes. Other nations followed, each with a joint-stock company: the English in 1600, the Dutch in 1602 and the French in 1664. They wanted spices, and then Indian cotton cloth, which sold well in Europe and South-East Asia.
The Andhra coast was a good place for this trade. Cloth was woven and painted in the villages of the Coromandel coast. The Golconda kingdom, which ruled most of the coast, welcomed foreign traders because the customs paid at its ports made the state rich. So the first European forts and warehouses (called factories) in Andhra were built at ports of the Qutb Shahi kingdom. In the 1700s, however, the Mughal empire and the Deccan states grew weak. The Europeans, who had come to trade, began to take sides in local quarrels, and this changed them from merchants into rulers.
Political history
Early factories. The Dutch set up the first European factory in Andhra at Masulipatnam in 1605, and the English followed there in 1611. Masulipatnam, the port of Golconda, was known for chintz and kalamkari, painted and dyed cloth with fast colours. For a time it was the main English base on the east coast. The Dutch made their headquarters on the Coromandel coast at Pulicat, where they built Fort Geldria. They also had a factory at Pettapuli (Nizampatnam) and a fort at Bheemunipatnam. Pulicat was used for cloth trade, and the Dutch cemetery there, with a gateway of 1656, still stands under state protection.
The English built Fort Armagon at Durgarajapatnam in 1626, but the place did not suit them. In 1639 Francis Day obtained a strip of coast near Madras from the local ruler. The English built Fort St George there; work began in 1640 and the fort was finished by 1644. It became the main English base on the coast. The Sultan of Golconda gave the English a Golden Farman in 1632, which allowed them to trade at his ports on easy terms. Madras became a Presidency in 1653.
The French came later. They founded Pondicherry under Francois Martin; the usual exam date is 1674, though one old reference gives 1683. They also held Yanam, which remains a French-origin settlement on the Godavari delta.
Why the English and French fought. The Carnatic Wars were caused by three things together. First, the Mughal power weakened after Aurangzeb died in 1707. Second, two succession quarrels broke out at once: one for the throne of Hyderabad after the death of Nizam-ul-Mulk, and one for the Nawabship of the Carnatic, where Chanda Sahib challenged Nawab Anwaruddin, who was killed at Ambur in 1749. Third, England and France were already at war in Europe, and the war reached India.
| War | Years | Trigger | Main events |
|---|---|---|---|
| First | 1746-1748 | War of Austrian Succession in Europe | Battle of Adyar (1746); ended by the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle (1748) |
| Second | 1749-1754 | Quarrels over the Carnatic and Hyderabad successions | Ambur 1749 (Chanda Sahib); Clive at Arcot 1751; Treaty of Pondicherry 1754 |
| Third | 1757-1763 | Seven Years War | Bobbili 1757; Condore 1758; Wandiwash 1760; Pondicherry falls 1761; Treaty of Paris 1763 |
The French governor Dupleix was the first to train Indian soldiers under European officers and to use them in the politics of local states. The English learned from him. In the Second War, Robert Clive, then a young officer, seized and held Arcot in 1751. This broke the French plan. Dupleix was recalled and replaced by Godeheu, who made the Treaty of Pondicherry in 1754.
In the Third War the fight moved to Andhra. The Nizam, Salabat Jung, had given the French (through Bussy) four coastal Circars in 1753 to pay for their troops. But the English sent Colonel Forde from Bengal. He defeated the French commander Conflans at Condore in 1758 and captured Masulipatnam in 1759, which gave the English the coast. In 1760 Eyre Coote beat the French general Lally at Wandiwash, and Pondicherry surrendered in 1761. By the Treaty of Paris (1763) France got her trading posts back but could not keep an army or run them as a government. After this the English had no European rival in India.
The Battle of Bobbili (1757). This is the best known battle inside Andhra. It happened on 24 January 1757 at Bobbili fort. The rulers of Vizianagaram and Bobbili were rivals. Vijayarama Raju of Vizianagaram was backed by the French general Bussy. The Bobbili side fought with great courage but lost. In the well-known story, Tandra Paparayudu, angry at the death of his sister, entered the enemy camp and killed Vijayarama Raju, after which the Bobbili defenders ended their own lives. The tale is part of local tradition, and the exam asks for the main names: Bobbili Ranga Rao, Bussy, Paparayudu. Remember that Plassey, also 1757, was in Bengal.
The Northern Circars. The Northern Circars were the coastal districts of the Qutb Shahi kingdom, then Mughal, then held by the Nizam. After Clive obtained a grant from the Mughal emperor Shah Alam II in 1765, the English claimed all five Circars. The Nizam, Nizam Ali Khan, accepted the arrangement in treaties of 1766 and 1768 (the second is called the Treaty of Masulipatnam). The English took the last Nizam claims by purchase in 1823. The five Circars are listed as Guntur, Srikakulam, Rajahmundry, Ellore and Kondapalli, with headquarters at Masulipatnam. A Permanent Settlement was introduced in 1802 in the Circars, which made the zamindars the owners who paid a fixed amount.
The Carnatic and the Ceded Districts. The Carnatic had Arcot as its seat from 1692, under nawabs. After Anwaruddin's death in 1749, two claimants fought. The French backed one, the English the other. The English side was Muhammad Ali Wallajah, who ruled part of the Carnatic until his death in 1795 with their help. In 1801 the British took over its government by treaty and left the Nawab an annual allowance.
Meanwhile Tipu Sultan was defeated in the Third Mysore War (Treaty of Srirangapatna, 1792) and killed at Srirangapatna in 1799. The Nizam accepted the Subsidiary Alliance in 1798 and, since the British troops had to be paid for, ceded the Bellary, Anantapur, Cuddapah and Kurnool region in 1800. These are the Ceded Districts, most of today's Rayalaseema (Bellary is now in Karnataka). Thomas Munro was the first Collector, from 1800 to 1807.
Why the English won. The English were able to make use of what Dupleix had begun. He had shown that Indian recruits, drilled under European officers, could win battles, and that backing one claimant against another could win land and influence. The English copied the method and did it better. Clive's defence of Arcot in 1751 broke the French plan in the Second War. In the Third War, Forde's victory at Condore and Coote's victory at Wandiwash cut the French off from the coast. When Pondicherry, their chief base, fell in 1761, the French could no longer keep an army in the field. The Treaty of Paris left them only trading posts.
The long fight for Masulipatnam. Masulipatnam had been the port of Golconda, so whoever held it held the cloth trade of the whole coast. That is why it passed from hand to hand in the Carnatic Wars; at one point the English were expelled and the French held the town. In April 1759 Colonel Forde took it, and this victory opened the way to the English claim over the Northern Circars.
The Madras base. In 1639 the English bought the land for Madras from the ruler of Chandragiri, after talks led by Francis Day. The coast there was empty, but it suited the Company: a port nearer the Malacca Strait would help guard their spice route. A town grew round the fort and became the seat of the Presidency, established in 1653. In 1665 news came that the French Company had been formed, and the English answered by strengthening the fort and enlarging its garrison.
Administration and economy
Under the Company the Andhra coast and Rayalaseema were run by Collectors, who gathered revenue and kept order. In the Ceded Districts, Thomas Munro tried a new system. Instead of dealing with middlemen, the Collector settled the tax with each cultivator (ryot) directly. This is the Ryotwari System, and Munro is called its father. The Permanent Settlement, tried in the Circars, was the opposite: the zamindar paid a fixed sum and collected from the farmers. Mahalwari, in which the village shared the payment, was used elsewhere.
Cloth led the export list: chintz and kalamkari from Masulipatnam, handkerchiefs from Pulicat, lace from Narasapur and cotton cloth from Nizampatnam. Golconda sent diamonds. In the 19th century cheap machine-made cloth from Britain hurt the weavers and the old trade faded. Weaving at Masulipatnam fell sharply after the early 1800s.
Public works came later. Arthur Cotton built the Dowleswaram Anicut across the Godavari near Rajahmundry, completed in 1852. He is called the Father of Irrigation in Andhra. Colin Mackenzie, the first Surveyor General of India, collected manuscripts, inscriptions and local records; the Mackenzie Collection is held at Madras.
Society, religion and culture
The Europeans lived in walled settlements, and each had its own churches, cemeteries and warehouses. The Dutch cemetery at Pulicat, with its 1656 gateway, and the Dutch cemetery at Masulipatnam record the names of company staff and their families. Pulicat was also a centre of the Dutch slave trade in the 1600s, a dark side of the story that students should know. The English at Madras grew a town around Fort St George.
Local rulers and estates kept their own power for a while: Vizianagaram, Bobbili, Venkatagiri, Pithapuram and Kalahasti were important estates. Under the Company some of these became zamindaris. The best-known rising against the Company by local chiefs was the revolt of Uyyalawada Narasimha Reddy of the Kurnool region (now Nandyal district) in 1846. He led the Palegars, was born at Rupanagudi in Uyyalawada mandal, and is called the first freedom fighter of Andhra. The Company also set up institutions in this century: Madras University (1857), the Madras Legislative Council (1861) and the Madras High Court (1862).
Treaties with Mysore and their effect on Andhra. The Treaty of Mangalore (1784) and the Treaty of Srirangapatna (1792) belong to the long struggle with Mysore. Tipu Sultan died at Seringapatam in 1799. The Nizam's alliance of 1798 was made under Lord Wellesley, who was Governor General from that year.
Local resistance. Not all Telugu rulers accepted the new order. Chinna Vijayarama Raju (Vijayarama Raju II) of Vizianagaram fought the English at Padmanabham near Visakhapatnam in 1794 and was killed. The Vizianagaram estate continued as one of the large estates of the coast. The Kurnool revolt of 1846 is the next well-known act of local resistance.
Decline, legacy and sites to know
The French power ended with Wandiwash and the siege of Pondicherry, though French settlements such as Pondicherry and Yanam remained as small enclaves. Pondicherry changed hands several times between 1693 and 1816 before it was finally restored to France. The Dutch moved their main base from Pulicat to Nagapattinam around 1690, and Pulicat passed to the British in 1825.

How examiners use this chapter
- Company dates in order: English 1600, Dutch 1602, French 1664.
- Place-and-power pairs: Pulicat is Dutch, Armagon English, Pondicherry and Yanam French; Masulipatnam gave Dutch 1605 and English 1611 firsts.
- Battle pairs: Condore 1758 (Forde, Conflans), Wandiwash 1760 (Coote, Lally), Bobbili 1757 (Bussy), Arcot 1751 (Clive).
- Treaty-and-war pairs: Aix-la-Chapelle 1748, Pondicherry 1754, Paris 1763.
- Date order: Northern Circars grant 1765, Subsidiary Alliance 1798, Ceded Districts 1800, Carnatic 1801.
- People-and-title pairs: Munro with Ryotwari and the Ceded Districts, Cotton with irrigation, Mackenzie with surveys.
- Traps: Plassey and Bobbili share 1757; Armagon is not Fort St George; Munro is not Cotton.
Remember the general lesson of the chapter. The English did not conquer Andhra in one stroke. First they traded under licence from Golconda. Then they gained a fort at Madras. Then they took sides in the Carnatic and Hyderabad quarrels and won the coast in the Third War. Then they were given the Circars (1765). Finally the Nizam's treaty of 1798 and the cession of 1800 brought Rayalaseema under them. Each step is a favourite source of questions, and each depends on the one before.
Worked cases
Case 1: Arrange in time order: Battle of Wandiwash, Battle of Condore, Treaty of Paris, Fall of Pondicherry to the British.
Reasoning:
- 1. The Battle of Condore was in 1758, with Colonel Forde against Conflans.
- 2. The Battle of Wandiwash was in 1760, with Eyre Coote against Lally.
- 3. Pondicherry fell to the British in 1761.
- 4. The Treaty of Paris ended the Seven Years War in 1763, and with it the Third Carnatic War.
- 5. Order: Condore, Wandiwash, Pondicherry, Paris.
Takeaway: The Third Carnatic War moves from battle, to battle, to fall of the French base, to the treaty.
Case 2: Which pair is wrong: (a) Pulicat - Dutch, (b) Armagon - English, (c) Yanam - French, (d) Pondicherry - Dutch?
Reasoning:
- 1. Pulicat had Fort Geldria, the Dutch headquarters on the Coromandel Coast.
- 2. Armagon (Durgarajapatnam) had the English Fort Armagon.
- 3. Yanam is a French settlement, and so is Pondicherry, founded by Francois Martin.
- 4. So (d) is wrong.
Takeaway: Remember the three nations by one place each: Pulicat Dutch, Armagon English, Pondicherry French.
Case 3: A question gives "1757" and asks for the battle in Andhra. The options are Plassey and Bobbili.
Reasoning:
- 1. Both battles are dated 1757.
- 2. Plassey was fought in Bengal.
- 3. Bobbili is a fort in Vizianagaram. Bussy led for the French, and Bobbili Ranga Rao defended the fort.
- 4. The Andhra battle is therefore Bobbili.
Takeaway: When two events share a year, use the place to separate them.
Case 4: Which came first: the Nizam giving up the Ceded Districts, or the Subsidiary Alliance? What links them?
Reasoning:
- 1. The Subsidiary Alliance with the Nizam was in 1798.
- 2. The Ceded Districts were given up in 1800.
- 3. Under a subsidiary alliance British troops are stationed at the ruler's cost, so land was ceded to meet it.
- 4. The Ceded Districts are Bellary, Anantapur, Cuddapah and Kurnool, with headquarters at Bellary. Thomas Munro was their first Collector.
Takeaway: Cause comes first (1798 alliance); the cession (1800) is the result.
Compare and contrast
| Person | Title or role | Do not confuse with |
|---|---|---|
| Thomas Munro | Father of the Ryotwari System; first Collector of the Ceded Districts | Arthur Cotton |
| Arthur Cotton | Father of Irrigation in Andhra; Dowleswaram Anicut | Thomas Munro |
| Colin Mackenzie | First Surveyor General of India | Thomas Munro |
| Robert Clive | Founder of the British Empire in India; defended Arcot | Eyre Coote |
| Dupleix | First Governor General of French India; Governor of Pondicherry | Godeheu |
| Tandra Paparayudu | Hero of Bobbili | Bobbili Ranga Rao |
| Battle | Place or area | Sides |
|---|---|---|
| Ambur | Near Vellore | Chanda Sahib claims the Carnatic |
| Condore | Chandurthi village, Godavari region north of Masulipatnam | Forde against Conflans |
| Wandiwash | Tamil Nadu | Eyre Coote against Lally |
| Bobbili | Bobbili Fort | Bussy; Bobbili Ranga Rao |
| Padmanabham | Near Visakhapatnam | Vizianagaram forces |
| Plassey | Bengal | Not an Andhra battle |
| Buxar | Bihar | Not an Andhra battle |
| Adyar | Madras | Not an Andhra battle |
How to use these tables: a question on Europeans often gives a fort and asks for the power, the place or the builder. Fix the pair in your mind with one word. Geldria is Dutch, Armagon is English, and Pondicherry is French. For battles, learn the place and the two commanders together. When the question names a Governor General, Wellesley is linked with the Subsidiary Alliance. For people, always remember what each one is known for, because the question usually gives only the title. Colonel Forde is linked with two events: Condore and the capture of Masulipatnam from the French.
