NEW DELHI, September 15 — The Union Ministry of Finance issued an official gazette notification appointing October 1, 2026, as the date of enforcement for the Bankers' Books Evidence Act, 2026.
Passed by Parliament during the Monsoon Session, the new legislation replaces the archaic Bankers' Books Evidence Act of 1891. The updated law recognizes electronic bank statements, digital transaction logs, core banking system records, and encrypted financial databases as admissible legal evidence in court proceedings without requiring physical ledger verification.
Banking officials noted that the reform simplifies judicial processes for loan recovery, fraud investigation, and financial dispute resolution.
Banking laws and financial sector legislation are key topics in banking awareness and legal aptitude tests. Candidates should note that the 2026 Act modernizes evidentiary rules for digital and electronic banking records.
