MUMBAI, October 4 — In a major expansion of India's contactless payments ecosystem, global technology giant Apple has officially rolled out "Apple Pay" in India, collaborating with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and Axis Bank as its primary launch partners.
The deployment operates across both the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) rail and card-tokenization rails, permitting iPhone and Apple Watch users to execute encrypted, biometric-authenticated tap-and-pay transactions at retail Point of Sale (POS) terminals as well as across in-app checkout gateways. Full adherence to the Reserve Bank of India's mandatory data localization directives ensures that all transactional credentials and cryptographic tokens reside exclusively within domestic datacentres.
Fintech analysts note that the launch underscores the unmatched scale of India's Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), with UPI currently processing in excess of 15 billion transactions monthly and expanding its cross-border bilateral footprints worldwide.
Digital payments infrastructure, card tokenization, and UPI innovations are frequent themes in banking, regulatory, and civil service examinations. Candidates should remember that the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) was incorporated in 2008 under the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007 as an initiative of the Reserve Bank of India and Indian Banks' Association (IBA).
