NEW DELHI, October 7 — The National Testing Agency (NTA), acting on behalf of the University Grants Commission (UGC), on Wednesday published the detailed information bulletin and opened online candidate registrations for the National Eligibility Test (UGC NET December 2026) cycle on `ugcnet.nta.ac.in`.
The nationwide assessment determines candidate eligibility for appointments as Assistant Professor in Indian universities and colleges, alongside awarding Junior Research Fellowships (JRF) and governing Ph.D. admissions under the unified higher education framework. Postgraduate degree holders and candidates enrolled in the final year of their qualifying Master's degree can submit application forms and remit examination fees through October 31, 2026, with the computer-based assessment scheduled across 83 academic disciplines between December 10 and December 22, 2026.
The examination comprises two mandatory papers administered in a single continuous three-hour testing session without an inter-paper break. Paper-I (100 marks) tests generic Teaching and Research Aptitude, Higher Education systems, and reasoning through 50 objective questions, while Paper-II (200 marks) evaluates domain depth across 100 multiple-choice questions aligned with the candidate's chosen discipline, operated without negative evaluation penalties.
The statutory functioning of the University Grants Commission under the UGC Act of 1956, autonomous testing governance under the National Testing Agency, and academic research fellowship structures represent essential subjects in UGC-NET Paper-I and higher education governance studies. Candidates should note that the NTA was established by the Union Cabinet in November 2017 as an autonomous premier testing organization registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, standardizing competitive screening assessments for central universities and professional councils.
