NEW DELHI, October 15 — The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), India's national standardisation body operating under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, on Thursday published the country's first formalized technical standard suite (IS/ISO/IEC 42001) governing Artificial Intelligence (AI) safety management and algorithmic auditing.
The newly codified regulatory benchmarks establish strict auditing guidelines for high-risk AI deployments across clinical diagnostics, algorithmic credit scoring, autonomous transportation, and predictive policing. Systems must demonstrate rigorous resilience against adversarial data poisoning, transparent algorithmic explainability (XAI), and zero socio-demographic bias.
BIS leadership noted that harmonizing domestic AI standards with international ISO/IEC benchmarks empowers Indian software enterprises and startups to satisfy cross-border compliance regimes—including the European Union AI Act—while safeguarding citizen data privacy under the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act 2023.
The statutory mandate of the Bureau of Indian Standards under the BIS Act 2016 (replacing the 1986 statute), the institutional evolution from the Indian Standards Institution (ISI, 1947), NITI Aayog's National Strategy for AI (Responsible AI for All), and legal frameworks regulating automated algorithms represent high-yield topics across UPSC Civil Services (GS-III: Science, Technology & Ethics in AI) and State PSC exams.
